WOW. I am just now emerging into murder and murder mystery novels and this one had me HOOKED. From the very beginning until the very end I had absolutely zero clue who committed the crime. As a listener you would be led to believe it was clearly one person and then SWOOP turns out it isn't that person. I loved the way this book was written. I loved the narrator -- you also get a secondary narrator at one point (no spoilers though so I can't say when). I cannot recommend this book enough. Easy 4 stars.

I also need someone else to read this so I can see if it truly does leave you in the dark the whole time or I'm just a newb in the mystery novel world.

I just finished listening to The One That Got Away with Murder by Trish Lundy and Narrated by Helen Laser; Joshua Quinn and here are my thoughts.

Lauren is the new girl. A soccer star joining a team that only has space because the last girl died. She mysteriously drowned and the boy she is having a no strings-attached fling with…Was the dead girl’s boyfriend and she died at his lake house. Not like Lauren is a good girl but she was hoping for a fresh start.

Vowing to break it off before school starts Lauren accepts an invite to go to the lake house with Robbie. While on the boat Lauren finds the bikini top that Victoria was wearing before she drowned but was never recovered and it has a blood stain on it.

Not knowing what to do, Lauren puts the top back but not knowing who to trust or where to turn is just as dangerous as the knowledge she now has..

Firstly, the narrators were brilliant. They kept the right tone to their voices and held the exact amount of intrigue I needed to get sucked in.

The character build up was phenomenal. I haven’t enjoyed the good/bad threshold of a character in a book like this ever. You never know who’s telling the truth and what is the actual truth and no one is reliable and I love that. Lauren really wanted to get a fresh start in her new life with her mom and her new boyfriend. Whatever happened to her is a big dark cloud over her and it makes for a really dark narration.

The idea that the two brothers both lost their girlfriends under mysterious circumstances is the crux of the story and you can see why they are being blamed for murder and how these things weren’t their faults. You will find yourself leaning each way so many times and I had no clue until the reveal at the end what the truth was. I love books that keep me guessing.

The ending did seem a bit neat and a little rushed but I didn’t feel like it missed anything.

Overall a solid thriller!!

A page-turner!

After experiencing a traumatic event in her past town, Lauren and her mother have recently moved to a new place to start over. Lauren was hoping for a fresh start by keeping a low profile and focusing on graduation. Unfortunately, things aren't going as planned. Lauren's casual relationship with a boy named Robbie has become the talk of the school. To make matters worse, rumors have been circulating that Robbie may have played a role in his ex-girlfriend's death. Now, Lauren is in a tough spot, not knowing whether or not to believe the rumors and if she made a mistake by getting involved with Robbie.

This was an absolute page-turner! The author did an excellent job of keeping me engaged and guessing throughout the entire story. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I do think that the ending could have been more fleshed out. Things did wrap up rather quickly and neatly. Despite this, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrilling YA mystery or thriller. It's definitely worth a read!

***Thank you to NetGalley, Trish Lundy, and Macmillan Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

This was a good twisty YA mystery! You don’t know who to trust or who to believe.

I don’t want to give anything away but I highly recommend this one!
Narrated mostly by, Helen Laser who does a great job at bringing all the emotions and Joshua Quinn who tells us another side of the story and does a good job too!

The Crestmont family is rich and they are used to getting anything and getting away with anything. Well, almost anything. the small town of Happy Valley will not stop accusing handsome brothers, Robbie and Trevor, of murder.

It is alleged that they killed their ex-girlfriends. Robbie’s ex Victoria drowned at their lake house with a mysterious bruise on her chest that suggested it wasn’t an accident. And, Trevor’s girlfriend supposedly died of an overdose. But, why aren’t they serving time?

Lauren moves to Happy Valley after a few traumatic incidents to start anew. She meets Robbie and quickly becomes hot and heavy. When she starts school in the fall, her team finds out and they warn her to stay away because Robbie is bad news. The more Lauren tries to break off her relationship with Robbie…the more curious she becomes. Her recent experiences make her strong and make her a fighter. Can she stand up to the challenge of solving the murders and being in the good graces of her new team?

Full disclaimer, this book is written for a young adult audience. So, please keep that in mind when you are reading. If you take this information into account, I believe you will enjoy the book a great deal. Otherwise, you may unfairly rate the book upon completion. The book had several surprises sprinkled throughout and it kept me engaged…wanting to learn more. A recommended read for sure!

Trish Lundy has penned a good one with The One Who Got Away With Murder. Lauren and her mom move across the country to escape her past. She is desperately trying to forget. Once a week she sees Robbie and tries to forget for a while. However, she soon learns that Robbie has his own sordid past: one that follows him everywhere. His girlfriend died when he was the only one around. No charges were ever pressed but it follows him still. Can the two help each other? Or will they only bring more pain?
Check it out and see!

This was a debut novel ?? I certainly would never have guessed it without being told! The characters were well written and made you feel. The story kept you guessing and when the reveal was made there was still tension in the book to keep you on the edge of your seat. As for who did it? I did not see it coming at all. I loved it. I had to rewind because I couldn't hear the narration over my gasp and saying “No! No way! Nuh uh!“ and so on. Will I recommend this? Absolutely! I already have!! And I want this in every format for myself. Audiobook to keep forever, ebook, physical copy, because I would revisit it multiple times in each one. This was an total delight. I relistened to this on my birthday with a mug of tea during a stormy day and it was perfection.

Thank you so much to Trish Lundry, MacMillan Audio, and NetGalley for allowing me the pleasure of an early listen to this delightful book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lauren moves after a difficult situation and transfers to a new school. Before the school year starts, she meets Robbie. They spend time together throughout the summer. Once school begins and Lauren hangs out with her new soccer teammates, she learns Robbie was blamed for Victorias death. Lauren agrees to visit Robbie at his families lake house one weekend where she discovers evidence of a crime.

OMG this was a wild ride and I didn't know who to trust! I did see that twist coming, he was just too good to be true. What a dick-bag! This was my 1st book by Trish Lundy but will definitely not be my last, I am adding all of her books to my TBR! I can't wait to see what she writes next!

Smoke and fire seems to follow Lauren since she moved from California. Will the past repeat itself with her new relationship?
Lauren isn’t the only one that tragedy follows. Her new boyfriend, Robbie Cresmont, is from a family that has a body count. Last summer Robbie’s girlfriend Victoria mysteriously drowned at the family’s lake house while he slept, and everyone thinks he is the one responsible. Desperate to get away from her past, Lauren struggles with her conscience to do the right thing when she finds evidence that might implicate Robbie. But she needs to deal with her past decisions in order to find the murderer before she ends up dead.

This book is destined to be a Lifetime movie. The dynamic Lauren has with all the relationships in her life is self destructive and relatable. Lundy sets a typical high school setting of new girl versus bullies but adds extra twists. I felt I had the ending figured out but was surprised by who the murder actually was. I also really wanted more depth with certain characters or more of a 3rd person point of view.

*Thank you to Trish Lundy, Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the audio copy. I am freely leaving my honest review.

Great narration for this audio. I felt the narration for Lauren's perspective was perfect and then the man's narration was suitably fitting enough for the bad guy. It actually surprised me when it switched. I liked that a lot. My full thoughts on the story itself can be found below.

Full review:

I had so much fun reading The One that Got Away with Murder. I read it in a 24-hour period and clearly, it hooked me. It was drama-filled, fast-paced and compelling. Exactly how I like my YA Mystery/Thrillers. I can't believe this is a debut!? How is that even true?!

In this story we follow Lauren. a high school soccer star, just about to enter her Senior year. Sadly, she's going to be doing that at an all new school, as she has recently moved with her Mom from California to Happy Valley, Pennsylvania. Her Mom's long-distance boyfriend lives in Happy Valley, so following a scandal at Lauren's old school, they decide it would be best for them to make a fresh start there.

Lauren understands the reasoning behind the move, but it's still a difficult transition and her new teammates won't be making it any easier on her. Prior to the school year beginning, Lauren meets a boy, Robbie Crestmont, and the two begin spending time together. Hooking up, may be the most accurate term for their relationship.

Once she begins hanging out with her teammates though, when soccer season begins, she learns that Robbie isn't the most liked guy in Pleasant Valley. In fact, some of the girls are downright hostile towards him. In fact, they blame him for the death of their teammate, Victoria, Robbie's one-time girlfriend. The story is that Victoria died during a late night swim at the Crestmont's lake house. Her friends and teammates aren't buying the story that it was an accident. They suspect foul play.

Not helping is the fact that Robbie's brother's girlfriend also died a mysterious death about a year after Victoria. Two brothers, two dead girlfriends. That can't be a coincidence. Even Lauren can admit that doesn't seem right. After agreeing to go visit Robbie's family lake house over Labor Day weekend, Lauren vows that will be the last weekend she will spend with him. While there, however, she discovers some evidence that may just confirm Robbie's involvement in Victoria's death.

Lauren is scared. Does anyone know she found what she found at the lake house? She hopes not. With dangers around every corner, Lauren is unsure who she can trust. As she navigates between the the powerful Crestmont family and her soccer teammates, Lauren begins to piece together the truth of the two dead girls.

As mentioned above, I had a blast reading this. It's so compelling. It drew me in from the start. There was something about Lauren's character that vibed well with my tastes. I loved reading from her perspective, and learning about her. She can be a little harsh, a little cold, a little angry, but I like that...

You could tell that something fairly significant had happened in her past, but it was slowly revealed to you over the course of the story, instead of laid on you all at once. I enjoyed how that was done. I like that Lundy took her time revealing Lauren's full-self. She's a tough girl, but she definitely struggles with a lot over the course of the story.

I also liked Robbie and his brothers. They were extremely wealthy and powerful in this town, but instead of being the revered golden boys, as would typically be the case in these type of circumstances, they were more like social pariahs. Lauren looking into their family, and others in the town was very interesting and if kept me on my toes. There were plenty of suspicious actors floating about.

It's funny, when I was about halfway through this book, I was having so much fun, I thought, I need to go read this author's previous books! With this in mind, I went to Trish Lundy's author page here on Goodreads and discovered, THIS IS HER FIRST BOOK!?

I was seriously shocked. This is such a well-constructed and thought-out Teen Mystery, IMO. If this is her debut, I cannot wait to watch her career over the next few years. If you enjoy YA Mystery/Thriller authors such as Jessica Goodman, Karen M. McManus, or Kara Thomas, you have to check this out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Thank you to the publisher, Henry Holt & Company (BYR) and Macmillan Audio, for not only providing me with copies to read and review, but also for introducing me to a talented new author to obsess over!!!

Thank you NetGalley for the ACR! This is a nice young adult thriller. It was easy to follow and had a few twists to it. The narrator did a great job!

With this one having a content warning of drvg usage, I’m not surprised that this one wasn’t my favorite. I skipped a lot of this book and still was able to guess the killer, so I’m not sure this one was for me.

The plot of this was cool. I liked that there was a secret from the main character as well as the killer. There was something going on constantly and it kept the tension super high. And because of this, the main character was something like a freaking teen detective. I really was impressed by this group of teens.

The characters in this were really wild. I don’t know how to explain it other than that. The teens literally solved this case on their own. They didn’t go to the police office and sneak in to get clues or anything like that and I was so happy. I HATE when things are too unrealistic. But this one wasn’t like that. This one just had a quick witted teen who was smart enough to get people to give up the information. Now don’t get me wrong, I didn’t like all the characters. That one girl on the team deserved to get beat up. I don’t care who she was. She was a bitch and she needed a check-in with these hands. Lastly, I LOVED the way we get a few chapters from the killer is what made this for me. I don’t think I’ve ever read a YA book that did that.

I didn’t like the drvg usage. But that’s a me thing. I had the audiobook from Netgalley and the list wasn’t in it. I really wish they would list these somewhere. I ended up skipping a huge part of this. And the reason I couldn’t give this a higher rating was because I still was able to choose the correct killer. But I knew things were too good and everything just kept lining up for them. I just knew. Also, I HATED that they blamed one of the victims and used the drugs as what was going on. And of course, the lie was spread by the actual person. Idk, it annoyed me.

This had a lot going on, and I liked it, but there was one thing that really turned me out. And of course it was a big ass part of the story. I would still offer it to the teens, but I’d offer them some of my real favorites from Holly Jackson, Karen McManus, and Tiffany Jackson first.

fairly okay book. I really enjoyed the narration, but honestly not the best or something to remember. I wish i could give it a better review

This audiobook was made available to me by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I did truly enjoy myself with this book. I don't tend to like YA as much these days but was pleasantly surprised. It was a little more on the mature side, which I enjoyed since it felt authentic to the character's ages

The twists and turns were enough to keep me moving through in one sitting because I just had to find out what happened. I liked the exploration of the relationship between Lauren and her mom and what it means when a parent starts to have someone new in their life. I thought Lauren was well written and relatively believable as a high school senior, though I felt that the narrator for Lauren felt much older. Also the fact that she mentioned biting the inside of her cheek was "an old habit" numerous times annoyed me. While her detective skills left something to be desired, I liked following her through this story and disagreeing with her choices along the way. I will definitely be looking for more from this author in the future.

Somehow I managed to read four books in a row with the exact same theme ☠️ I do love a good YA mystery and this was well done. Newcomer to town, the protagonist finds out the first boy she books up with has a history of his girlfriends going missing.

This book has some triggers I recommend checking out especially uf you have any trauma involving predatory figures in authority, but told a good story with a satisfactory resolution.

The One That Got Away with Murder by Trish Lundy

Thank you so much NetGalley, Macmillan audio, and Henry Holt & Co for the free audiobook.

Blurb:
This is an edge of your seat thriller about a teen who is forced to confront her past in order to catch a murderer before she ends up the next victim.

✨My thoughts:
I loved it! It was fast and fun in the best way. The twists were twisty and once you start reading, you’ll need to n ow what happens next. Helen Laser and Joshua Quinn narrated the audiobook and it was SO good. So good in fact, that I want to get a physical copy for my forever shelves. Who is the killer?! Just when you think you know… you don’t. You’ll just have to read it to find out. If you enjoy YA thrillers, I think you’ll enjoy this one!

Happy reading

I think this book was good, but in a way that Kraft Mac and cheese is good. It’s delicious, for sure, but it’s a little…. predictable? Standard? I really enjoyed it, don’t get me wrong, but the twists were guessable annd the ending was guessable. It read exactly as a YA mystery thriller would read, and while that’s not a bad thing, this books stands at a solid 3.5 amongst the recent peers of 4-5 star reads. Not bad, absolutely not bad (and very enjoyable), but it doesn’t have The Hook in it like a lot of recent thrillers have.

"The One That Got Away With Murder" by Trish Lundy presents a mystery with potential, especially for its target audience of younger readers, given its high school setting. However, there were some unnecessary elements, particularly in the early chapters, which just felt like too much and did not add any real depth to the story. It also did not build suspense or support the main mystery in any meaningful way, so it didn't capture my attention (and actually did the opposite).

The slow start was a drawback for me; it took more than twenty percent of the book for the story to really grab my attention. Additionally, the backstory didn't feel seamlessly integrated into the narrative, which hindered the flow of the plot. That being said, once the story picked up, it was entertaining enough to keep me engaged. While it may resonate more with a younger audience, I believe some streamlining could enhance its appeal to a wider readership.

This was a decent and fast paced thriller. It was a little too young adult for me I tbh n J would've loved the relationships better if it was an adult fiction. Love that I didn't guess the killer
