I'm enjoying this series of books dealing with Health Care Professionals for children. "I'm a Doctor" by Lauren Kukla is a great nonfiction children's book that teaches children about the job of a Doctor, specifically, a Pediatrician. There are short chapters on the tools, the team, the shift, and a day in the life. In this book the pediatrician works in a primary care clinic, as well as doing rounds in the hospital. In the book she stresses that she gets to watch her patients grow up. During the day in the clinic, see her working with several patients with different needs such as: a newborn check up, a check up before starting school and getting vaccines, a throat and ear infection, someone with a common cold and an adolescent with issues where she recommends him to a pediatric psychologist. I like that there is an interview with a "real life flight Pediatrician" working at the Mayo Clinic. There is a glossary at the end as well as resources for further exploration. The illustrations are wonderfully done and add much to the book. I like how diverse and multi-cultural the characters are, giving young people of any nationality a chance to see themselves in these pages. The superpower of this doctor is Respect. She shares why it is important and how she provides it in many different ways. It then asks the reader how they show Respect. A wonderful book for classrooms talking about community helpers, or discussing jobs for their futures etc. I recommend it for schools, classrooms and public libraries.

This book is beautifully put together and perfect for teaching children about what a day in the life of a doctor is like. It focuses on a pediatrician and some of the things that they see patients for. Correct terminology is used with a glossary provided with definitions, yet the language is kept simple. Photographs of real people are in the book, along with illustrations. A variety of cultures are represented, making this suitable for all children to feel comfortable and “seen”. I highly recommend this as a book for an elementary classroom or as a gift for a child who has more frequent medical needs or a strong interest in learning about the field of medicine.

This is an especially good book for the primary social studies standard about all people playing a role in the community. I like the diversity in the book. It is a must have series for career studies in younger classrooms.

Now at least six books strong, this series continues to do what it did the first time I saw it – detail the career of a medical hero in ways that appeal and can be related to by the very young. Here it is a paediatric doctor, so again we see the gear they tote on their rounds, who they work with, and then get shown a 'typical' shift, from 7.30 to 4. This isn't designed to make you want to be a paediatrician, as such, but will certainly reassure anyone with a bug or with a sibling too young to convey what is making them ill that pain-free help is available. We also have to factor in the fine illustrations, a nice way of presenting the first person voice of a fictional medical expert, and an interview with a living and breathing one – this is worth considering. A strong four stars.

The doctor highlighted in this book is a pediatrician who sees children in hospital first, then has clinic hours. A number of patients are seen and have simple examinations which tell the doctor if there is something medically wrong and if something needs to be done. A doctor's superpower is respect.
There is a glossary, a few URLs, and an index.
The illustrations by Susana Gurrea are clear, imaginative, colorful, and informative.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your local public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Mayo Clinic Press Kids via NetGalley. Thank you!

This was a fun and informative way for children to learn more about doctors and what they do. This is a great book to both get children interested in medicine and help them be less fearful about going to the doctor themselves. The book has a bright colorful illustrations and engaging text. I enjoyed the opportunity at the end of the book to meet a real life doctor.
