This book is cozy. It's holy. It's stories. It's permission. The writing is accessible and clear. Having your mug and soft blanket, your mundane pleasures nearby will add to the experience so you can watch them transformed into personal sacramental symbols.

Ordinary Mysticism by Mirabai Starr reminds us that we are all Mystics. We don’t have to be a guru or read a massive amount of books on spirituality to be able to become closer to Spirit. Spirit is within us, around us, and in everyone and everything. Starr gives numerous historical examples of those who found themselves surrounded by Love when things were at their darkest.

Starr herself experienced great tragedy, and it is through this experience that she surrenders and meets God.. Her words are a guide for all of us while we are on life’s journey. We too can experience Spirit in our daily mundane tasks. She reminds us to look for the Mystical everywhere, and we will find it!

There is a lot to like about Starr’s lovely flowing style of telling her stories, but that might be the one flaw of this otherwise well-written memoir. I say memoir because she writes about herself far more than she writes about mysticism. I imagine she has heard that before. But from mystics to Matthew Fox to Ram Dass, we have all covered this territory again and again. The title is enticing, as is her encouragement to find mysticism within and all around you. But there is nothing even remotely original here, which is why her own story must command the narrative. I’m glad she wrote it and it’s a nice addition to her other books.

What is an ordinary mystic? To be a mystic means that you don't have to live in a Monastery to orient your life towards the sacred. To an ordinary mystic, every aspect of life is sacred. Each chapter of this well written and profound book explores the inherent sanctity of a different aspect of the manifest: intention. Attention. Surrender. Transmission, connection. Feeling and integration. Guided meditation exercises. Writing prompts. .
