What a start to a new crime detective series! Detective Freya Sinclair comes back to her home town after leaving under a cloud when her parents were discovered to be serial killers. Now back, she is all guns blazing when the body of a girl is discovered in a river, but when trying to identify her, finds there are a number of local girls missing. Soon another body is found and the race is on to find our what is happening to these girls and who is behind it.
A powerful pinch of a book that I devoured in one sitting. Slowly the background of Freya revealed the details of her past and reluctance of the town to welcome her back. She makes some allies on the team and together they bring justice to the town. You are never let down with a Emily Shiner book and this one certainly didn’t disappoint.

Thanks Bookouture, NetGalley, and Emily Shiner for the opportunity to read and listen to this amazing book. Freya Sinclair has returned to her hometown after five years away. Unfortunately, as a child she had the bad luck to be raised by parents that turned out to be serial killers. Ultimately she was responsible for the arrest of her parents but even so it made life hard on her in her town. Now she has come home to take on a position in the police department with her first case covering some missing girls. Soon the bodies of two little girls are found and another is reported missing. Freyra is desperate to find her before it’s too late.
Excellent book and I look forward to more in this upcoming series. This was book 1 and I look forward to reading book 2

1 star may seem a bit harsh for what is a well written book with a reasonable mystery. However, I got to the 90% mark and felt that I was unable to continue. This is purely personal preference, but I did not like the ending just purely on the content and the level of detail that was provided. It is a hard read and I was not in the right headspace for this content. I also found the behavior of the Police, particularly when constructing Facebook posts in one scene particularly unbelievable.

That being said, I would try from this author again as it was the content that caused me problems rather than the actual book not being well written, the content was just not something I could read about.

Narrated by Amelia Sciandra ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Story by Emily Shiner ⭐⭐⭐
This is a solid start to hopefully a really good series. The author was definitely cleaver with giving the reader little pockets of information about Freya and her childhood. Please tell me that story is going to be happening because I'm all here for it.

As for the premise of this book, it was pretty good.

This was my first experience with an audiobook (that I actually could listen to all the way through) and I ended up really enjoying it! Usually I find myself drifting off and completely missing parts of the story but the narrator kept me locked into the story as much as the plot did. I'm still amazed one person could make so many unique voices for each character we met.

While I really enjoyed the plot and loved guessing/investigating alongside Freya and Candy, I felt that at some points the characters explained their emotions a little too well. It didn't take away from the story by any means, it just felt a little unrealistic that they could say the things out loud the way they did especially when Freya seemed pretty private throughout the story.

I also hated Cinnamon (IYKYK, lol)

Once again, Emily Shiner hits it out of the park! I now have a new series I can't wait to read the next book! This was a great read and I couldn't stop listening once I started! I love that Det. Freya is not a withering violet and gets shit done. I can sense that she and her chief are going to eventually have a come to Jesus moment...can't wait to see what happens then!

I feel like there was a lot of stories in which we have a detective coming back to their home town where they have some dark past in. Of course we have some mysterious disappearance happened so our protagonists jump right away to solve it. I would say that it was a good companion audiobook, meaning I liked having it on while completing my chores rather than being invested so much, I couldn't put it back. And in that manner I would recommend it. As something to keep you company and being interesting enough to keep your attention divided. The narration itself was pleasurable and I have no objections to it.

A really enjoyable police procedural with a female detective.
an ARC via Netgalley. Audiobook version.

I really enjoyed this story, I enjoyed reading about Freya Sinclair, the protagonist, on her return to her hometown. There is a lot of dripfed information about her history (both from childhood and more recently) which I hope will be expanded upon in the next book in the series... it's enough to leave you wanting more and I completely understand why some of the story is left unfinished... I want to join her in the next book to find out more. Her boss is a 'love to hate, but does he really have a soft side' character, but I did enjoy the police-procedural themes, even though some days seemed to have more hours than possible in them judging by how much was fit in to them - and only a few 'I'm not sure that's how that would have really happened moments'.

The storyline is pretty harrowing, but not graphically or unnecessarily detailed, but without spoiling too much expect a cultish sort of behaviour. Let's just say you wouldn't want to join this group of 'soccer moms' for playdates anytime soon...

The pace was great, and listening via audiobook meant I often sat in the car at the end of a drive to finish off a chapter. Loved the narrators accent and voice too.

3.25 Stars

Detective Freya Sinclair has returned to her hometown after being away for five years, and her first case involves the tragic drowning of a little girl in a river. The situation becomes even more devastating when another young girl's body is discovered. As Freya races against time to solve the case and prevent further loss of innocent lives, she encounters several challenges that test her skills and determination.

While this novel didn't capture my attention as much as the author's previous work, You Can't Hide, I still found it to be a decent read. The ending was satisfying, and I found Freya's personal history quite intriguing. I wish there was a novel dedicated to exploring her relationship with her parents.

This book might be a great fit for those who enjoy dabbling in mystery and police procedural novels. However, it may not offer anything groundbreaking for avid readers.

***Thank you to NetGalley, Emily Shiner, and Bookouture Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

Emily Shiner's "Three Drowned Girls" is a fast-paced who done it mystery. I really liked the well rounded female lead characters, and the narrator did a wonderful job bring them all to life. I look forward to reading the next installment of this great new series.

This book was a great listen. Hands down one of my top 5 thrillers! The narrator was phenomenal as well!

It took a little to bit to get into this. It may not be for everyone. The story unfolds in a horrifying way. Once invested in the story, I was captivated. I very much appreciated how well the story was written. I had to finished it to find out how things played out.
Narration by Amelia Sciandra is clear but choppy. The story is simply read rather than told. Not one of my favourite narrations but the story’s well written.
Thank You to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listen to this ARC.

Great start to a new series! I’ve read a couple of books by this author and enjoyed them both, I love her writing style. As this was the first of the series, we got to know a bit about the characters. I’m ready to read more now and get to know them all better. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was the perfect choice and I hope she continues through the whole series. Highly recommend and I will definitely read them all!

Detective Freya Sinclair has returned to her hometown as a detective, and her first day on the job lands her in an investigation of a young girl found in the river.

I really enjoyed Freya and her colleagues, and will read other books in this series. The book mentions her past and what her parents did/why Freya left town, without really explaining what happened. I honestly thought I had missed a prequel that explained it, but hopefully it will come out in more detail in later books.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

I was a little concerned I was getting burned out on crime procedurals, so I was nervous to start this one. But I need not be as I was invested in this one from the start. Freya is introduced in this first in a new series. And while the reader is a little slow to learn about her, we know she is the daughter of serial killer parents. If that isn’t a heck of a stigma to live with. We know she was injured on her last job and there was some sort of incident that brought her back to her hometown even with it being haunted by her parents’ actions. I like this slow burn of information. Freya is interesting enough that I want to know more and like that anticipation.

In addition to being a fan of Freya, I also like the team she has and how their characters are also slowly being established. They are there from the start, but slowly become more fleshed out as we learn little bits of information about them.

This case is a little bit dark as it involves missing children. Well, it starts with the death of one and moves on to missing children that everyone fears may also have been killed. This could be a trigger for some, but I felt it was tactfully done without any gruesome details.

Amelia Sciandra does a good job narrating the audiobook and the various characters. While I wasn’t a huge fan of her male voices, there isn’t a lot of male dialogue. But she did a great job with the story itself and the female voices.

It’s a good start to an intriguing series.

This audiobook was released earlier this week and is the first book in a new series by @authoremilyshiner. First of all, this book was set in North Carolina so you know I had to read it! The setting is the town of Fawn Lake, but it sounds much like small towns throughout NC. I loved the main character Detective Freya Sinclair who became a police officer after being raised by parents who were eventually found to be serial killers. In this book she investigates a case related to a missing girl. The story was shocking with unpredictable twists. I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to read more about Detective Sinclair’s cases in the future.

I highly recommend this book, especially if you love crime thrillers involving serial killers and missing person cases.

Thank you @bookouture for allowing me to listen to this audiobook ahead of publication in exchange for my honest review.

Fawn Lake harbors secrets and a dangerous plot unfolds. Detective Freya Sinclair is determined to uncover the culprit, who targets innocent young girls. The book entertained me with its dark and mysterious storyline, and I appreciated the unexpected ending.

It's a gripping police procedural that hooked me from the first page. Freya, the main character, is likable, as are several others in the story.

"Three Drowned Girls" was an enjoyable read.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the free copy of the book.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to the audiobook of Three Drowned Girls. I’m not a huge series person, but I feel like this will appeal to fans of Melinda Leigh’s Bree Taggert series or Rachel Caine’s Stillhouse Lake series. Honestly I was more interested in the “my parents are serial killers” angle, but maybe she’ll dive more into that in future books in the series.

Freya Sinclair returns to her hometown after a refuge in Texas helps her clear her mind from her past. She gets a job at her former police dept and steps right get back into the roll she left. She didn’t expect to dive so deep so quickly.

This book kept me hooked from the beginning. I couldn’t stop listening and had to find out the ending as soon as I could. Emily Shiner’s writing was suspenseful and thrilling. I could picture every scene as each chapter was read. I can’t wait to read the 2nd book in the Freya Sinclair series.

Emily Shiner is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors! Three Drowned Girls was amazing and I'm so glad that it is the first in a series. I'll be counting the days until I can devour Freya's next adventure. The narrator was fantastic and truly brought the story to life. 5 big stars on this one!
