A taut, well-written novel within a novel, the external novel in this book begins with Susan, who is married to a philandering doctor, receiving a novel from her first spouse. Calling her his best critic, he asks her to read and critique his work. I am still not entirely clear on what was going on in either book, but the internal novel was among the more disturbing things I've recently read. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes thought-provoking works and doesn't mind violence.
