Description

When most people hear “Bellevue,” they imagine the dark and dismal awakenings of an old-fashioned insane asylum. In reality, today’s Bellevue Hospital is a cutting-edge hospital treating illegal immigrants, super max prisoners, UN diplomats, and Wall Street tycoons alike. In TWELVE PATIENTS: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital, Bellevue’s former medical director Eric Manheimer takes the reader behind the closed doors and unveils a compelling microcosm of contemporary New York City.

Dr. Manheimer follows twelve patients from all walks of life—from the Wall Street banker with a prescription drug problem to a troubled ward of the state to a Rikers Island prisoner—as they are treated at Bellevue. However, Manheimer narrates not only as the hospital’s medical director; he is also a patient. As the book unfolds, he is diagnosed with cancer and wrestles with his own mortality as he struggles to save the lives of others.

Moving, gripping, and beautifully written, TWELVE PATIENTS touches on several hot-button issues, including healthcare, immigration, and the prison system, filtered through the eyes of the world’s most infamous hospital’s residents and patients.

Advance Praise

Sampling three decades of the doctor's tenure as medical director, the book offers desperate glimpses into the unfortunate lives of the sick, the injured and the dying, yet the author never relinquishes his hold on hope, however fleeting.

--Kirkus Reviews

Manheimer offers far more than remarkable medical dramas: he blends each patient's personal experiences with their social implications…. he offers a window onto a unique hospital and the wisdom of a healer who tends with equal skill to patients and the world.
