Advanced Praise for Book 2, The Tarnished

The Tarnished is already a 5-Star Recommended Read from Indies Today!

A stellar follow-up novel, The Tarnished brings back all the beloved characters, blooming magic, affectionate relationships, and quirky locations from book one and follows the dramatic storyline of Predonia’s hostile takeover. Fantasy is shined up and given new inspiration with a protagonist whose motivation is born of tragedy, but shaped by love rather than seething hatred or revenge. Princess Briana is a warm and empathetic character that middle-grade readers will immediately become fond of due to her charisma and sincerity. While rulership is in her future, she never sets aside humility, friendship, or her fierce sense of loyalty. Young Briana is gifted with many things, though her true strength lies not with weapons training or a magical ability to become invisible, but her gift at forming unbreakable bonds of friendship. These steady relationships help Briana from becoming swallowed up with grief as she deals with problems much bigger than herself. A benevolent fantasy that balances formidable challenges with light, life, and hope, The Tarnished develops a solidly entertaining plot and is a pure delight to read.” —Indies Today

The Tarnished is the perfect mix of magic and mayhem. Brie is growing up and becoming the fierce warrior that her family and kingdom need. I'm pounding my fist against my heart and hailing Brie as queen. Bring on book three, because I am a fan until the end.” —Karen Amanda Hooper, author of the Kindrily series

“We return to Predonia to find a kingdom swirling as a dark reign is spreading and Princess Brie’s spark of hope is fading. Even the Blameless are starting to question their loyalties as evil forces and a cunning new ruler seize on the uncertainty of the times. In this triumphant second installment, Christison expertly whisks the reader through a richly portrayed realm filled with old friends and new, action, and captivating fantasy. Brie’s world is expanding, as is her devotion to the people of her kingdom and those who have sworn to protect it. A lionhearted champion is rising, but not everyone may want to be saved.

The Tarnished is a beautifully crafted, epic coming-of-age adventure that continues the central themes of The Blameless while bravely launching forward into a thickening plot and set-up for a climacteric battle between good and evil. Excellent from start to finish. You won’t be able to put it down.” —Steve O’Farrell, author of the Simone LaFray series

“Wow! . . . Unique and fascinating magic system, endearing lovable characters, and strong, engaging writing. This kept me on the edge of my seat even more [than the first book], just so full of action and adventure, while at the same time just as full of those feel-good, makes-your-heart-full moments. I’m already desperate for more. This was even better than the first book, which is mind-blowing alone. . . . Diving back into this world was like coming home . . . only to a home I wish I could really go to, with my favorite uncles waiting.” —Belle’s Middle Grade Library

another great entry in the Blameless series, it did everything that I was hoping for in a sequel. E. S. Christison has a great talent for telling the fantasy genre and I really had a great time in the universe. I was hooked from the first book and was glad this was what I expected from the first book.

“How was I supposed to know?” Brie wailed, wiping her eyes. “I thought she was dead because of me! I was the one who distracted her during our battle in the courtyard!” I used telepathy to get her attention during the fight. I did it on purpose. Brie sent the thought to Derek."
