The Scottish Play

Wedding day! Gina's daughter is getting married but she is using the Glamis castle (for Gina this means MacBeth, which means an impending death). Sure enough a death occurs but Gina's date, her long standing police boyfriend is there to help. Gina also adds her two sense as an amateur detective.

This is a super fun book, I recommend to anyone who likes cozy mysteries, riddling murders and fun family dynamics!

I hadn't read any in this series so I was a little lost on characters. But the mystery itself was good! I liked the tying in of the superstition about Macbeth.

The title says it all. A wedding set in Scotland's Glamis Castle. Macbeth notwithstanding, what could possibly go wrong? But GIna Gray, amateur sleuth from other books, thinks her daughter's choice of venue courts disaster. And she is correct because a wedding guest is murdered. But Gray is now a suspect in the crime and is supposed to not get involved in solving it. But knowing fierce and brave literary women, we know she won't sit idly by.

I absolutely adored this. This book was so amazing and it had me completely entrantsed with the characters and the plot. Absolutely loved this. I need more books like this.

Short and entertaining.
A family wedding that goes wrong, we'll don't they always, but not quite to the point of a dead body.
No shortage of suspects, or reasons for the murder.
I really liked this family, and could happily read some more about them, some good well rounded characters with good back stories.
Tbh, I wasn't too bothered who the murderer was, as I hadn't got to know the victim.

I love anything about Scotland. This was a good book, not my favorite but good! I enjoyed the plot and characters. A solid 4 star read for me!

I am currently teaching Macbeth to my students, so when I saw the description for this book, I had to request it! It was definitely different than I expected, but it was a medium-paced read that I truly enjoyed!! The ties to Macbeth were done well, but not overdone like other books that are retellings/inspired by Shakespeare. Definitely a must-read if you are a Macbeth fan, and love a good mystery!

I had not heard of this writer before and, having searched for previous books by Penny Freedman, was disappointed that I couldn't access the series from the beginning. Having said that I cannot recommend 'The Scottish Play' highly enough. The character of Gina Gray is highly entertaining, we hear her voice first hand throughout and narrative voice of the other characters which is initially confusing but one adjusts to quickly enough. What a humorous writing style Freedman has, I found myself laughing a lot. I am eager to go back to the beginning of this series and thank Netgalley, the publishers and the Author for a great murder mystery and a good dose of humour.

It's about time a top end TV drama company picked this series up for production. Absolutely perfect for Sunday nights on BBC1.
Once again Penny Freedman has written an elegant crime mystery. I love the quietness of the opening chapters which makes the slowly unfolding mystery of who the killer is totally mesmerising.
Gina and Freda have an enviable granny/granddaughter relationship and both, as usual, manage to outwit the professional policeman, David Scott.
The author knows her English lit and once again uses it to put some charming finishing touches to a beautifully written novel.

From the description, I thought this book sounded interesting.

When I began reading, my first impression was that I liked the narrator, and I was interested in whatever they had to tell the reader. As I continued, I found this book entertaining to read, and quite humorous. I was actually reminded a little bit of MC Beaton's Hamish Macbeth series, so I wonder if fans of those books would also like this.
