Description
Examine—and appreciate—the many ways in which people can create a family. This informative compendium goes beyond the basics of sexual reproduction to examine the diversity of medical and societal methods people use, including in-vitro fertilization, surrogacy, adoption, and more. Through scientific research, diagrams, and interviews with families, author Rachel Ginocchio provides a thoughtful and thorough examination of the possibilities available.

This book, intended for older children and tweens, tells the many ways families can be formed. It includes many different types of families from a variety of backgrounds. Each chapter includes a description of the processes and then personal stories from people who have chosen to create a family that way. It is inclusive of LGTBQIA families.
As the mom of kids who came into the world in less than the usual way, I was interested in this title. It explains the various less-common ways people form a family (IVF, surrogacy, adoption, etc.) and is frank without being over the top with the details. The narration and story of the parents as they make their decisions was compelling. I think my oldest daughter (10) will be ready for this in a couple of years. There's no content here I would find objectionable for a 10-year-old, but it does require a bit of abstract thinking that makes it more relevant to the middle school student rather than upper elementary.
I adore this book and I'd like it to be required reading for people. My family is built by adoption and I am always interested in the many ways of building a family. This book goes in and describes the several ways there are and then also shares stories of families that were built that way! It was fascinating.
