A reckless Victorian heiress sets her sights on a dashing ex-naval lieutenant, determined to win his heart as the two of them embark on a quest to solve a decades-old mystery in USA Today bestselling author Mimi Matthews's sequel to her critically acclaimed novels The Work of Art and Gentleman Jim.
Lieutenant Charles Heywood has had his fill of adventure. Battle-weary and disillusioned, he returns to England, resolved to settle down to a quiet, uneventful life on an estate of his own. But arranging to purchase the property he desires is more difficult than Charles ever imagined. The place is mired in secrets, some of which may prove deadly. If he’s going to unravel them, he’ll need the assistance of someone as daring as he is.
At only twenty, Lady Katherine Beresford has already earned a scandalous reputation. As skilled with pistols as she is on horseback, she’s never met an obstacle she can’t surmount—or a man she can’t win. That is, until she encounters the infuriatingly somber Lieutenant Heywood. But Kate refuses to be deterred by the raven-haired soldier’s strong, silent facade. After all, faint heart never won handsome gentleman.
From the wilds of rural Somersetshire to the glittering ballrooms of early-Victorian London, Charles and Kate embark on a cross-country quest to solve a decades’ old mystery. Will the greatest danger be to their hearts—or to their lives?

I AM IN LOVE!! I adored the first two books in this series and having them combined is like the Hannah Montana lyrics “YOU GET THE BEEEEST OF BOTH WORLDS!” And you truly do
It takes some really masterful plotting to weave the characters from two books together while also incorporating a time jump. Mimi Matthews does it with incredibly satisfying results in this third installment of her Somerset Stories series, Return to Satterthwaithe Court. Of course, one could read this as a standalone and be swept away by the story of Katherine Beresford and Charles Heywood, but anyone who knows the characters from the first two books will be delightfully entertained by seeing many beloved characters again as the second generation takes on the main roles. Many will be happy to see dogs, cats, and horses woven into the story, as you'd expect from Mimi Matthews.
The book starts with a delightful scene in which Charles Heywood chases a stray dog that is apt to be hurt in traffic and meets Lady Katherine Beresford when the dog nips her. Charles' parents are from book 1 in the series and his mother's dogs feature prominently in that story, so it's no surprise that Charles is an animal lover. Katherine is the daughter of the spirited (and sometimes outrageous) couple from the second book and she's as strong willed and assertive as they were. As their relationship develops, we get to meet all the Heywood and Beresford siblings, which sets the stage for more books in the series (the question lurking in my mind is whether Ivo or James are next). Along with the romantic plot, there's a conflict around the property where Charles' mother grew up. It turns out that there is another thread connecting the families and it relates to that property, Satterthwaite Court. We also get some interesting insight into British imperialism though Charles' recollections of being in the Navy.
This was a completely joy to read and I'm certain I'll be revisiting it time and again in the future. All of Mimi Matthews' books are like comfort food to me, but this one is especially wonderful because of how it brought the characters together.
The Work of Art and Gentleman Jim are masterpieces in their own right with couples and stories that are unforgettable and enthralling. Not to mention so utterly, beautifully ROMANTIC.
Charles's and Kate's story is a bit lower-stakes than either of their parents' but no less action packed.
This book flips the usual trope of boy-pursues-girl, and to charming effect. Kate, headstrong, is determined to get closer to Charles, who is a bit lost in life now that he has given up his naval commission. He pretty much goes with the flow -
- until he doesn't.
What I loved -
-Mimi Matthews has clearly understood our love for competence in MMCs!
-The subverting of the "He agrees that (something) is beautiful but he's actually looking at her" so that it is Kate who looks at Charles was swoon-worthy!
-The callbacks to the previous two books were hilarious and reminded me of how much I love this little b00k - world! The characters' disgust of restorative jellies and the seemingly decades long problem with Uncle George's drainage system had me chuckling.
Return to Satterthwaite Court is a riveting read, I hadn't intended to read the entire book in one sitting but that's what I ended up doing! (And to hell with productivity!)
I screamed with delight when I saw I'd received an ARC...and I'm so happy and proud to be able to tell you that the book lives up to that excited shriek.
My heartfelt thanks to the author, the publishers and NetGalley for the ARC!
Now that we know there are to be 2 more stories with the Beresford's...well I can hardly wait, and I'm so ready to revisit Somerset!

Another fantastic romance from Mimi Matthews. You’ll want to devour it in one sitting.
Charles chases a stray puppy to save it when he meets Kate by chance. The stray bites Kate’s finger and Charles speaks biting words. Despite their “meet rude”, Lady Katherine is intrigued by Charles. She decides to pursue him, even though he’s not entirely sure he wants to get caught.
The plot starts in a dash and doesn’t slow down. There is a swoony romance and delightful twists. You don’t have to have read the previous books in the series to enjoy this charming romance. If you have, you’ll love seeing your favorite heroes and heroines as the parents!
