Description

Poppy is determined to win a blue ribbon for her cucumbers at the county fair. But Vincent Van Goat is always butting in—as goats do. He gobbles up her cucumbers before the big day! Poppy must come up with a new plan. Luckily, she knows a lot about fast-growing vegetables—and Vincent’s eating habits. If Poppy works hard enough, she might be able to present something at the fair after all. But will it be enough to win a blue ribbon?

Shelli R. Johannes

Shelli R. Johannes is the author of 18 books (out and forthcoming). She is the co-author (with Kimberly Derting) of the popular CECE LOVES SCIENCE series and PENNY (An Engineering Tale of the Fourth Pig). In addition to her tween and teen novels, she is also the author of the THEO THESAURUS series and SHINE LIKE A UNICORN. Her new chapter book in Chelsea Clinton’s “She Persisted” series on FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE comes out in March 2023.

Shelli can often be found on highways and country roads saving strays and other jaywalking critters or volunteering with animal conservation groups. After earning an MBA in Marketing and working in Corporate America, she finally escaped to follow her passion for writing.

She lives in Atlanta with her own pack of unicorns: a British husband, two teens, two Goldendoodles, one sassy bird, and the many loud characters that “live” in her head. Shelli is addicted to exclamation points, puns, unicorns, and anything sciencey. You can always count on her to laugh at her own jokes, at least once.

About the Illustrator

Kristen Humphrey grew up in a small town in southeastern Texas where she spent most of her days drawing and horseback riding. She has always shared her home with many different animals who have heavily influenced her artwork. Eventually she began taking on commissioned work which mostly included stylized pet and family portraits. While studying Visualization at Texas A&M University, Kristen became interested in children’s book illustration and began using the skills and techniques she was learning to develop her own illustrative style. After graduating, she continued taking private portrait commissions and bringing her own imaginings to life on a daily basis. She enjoys working both digitally and traditionally and sometimes combines the two. When she is not drawing, Kristen enjoys dog walking, hiking, and horseback riding in her spare time.
