This is only the second book.I have read by Caroline Mitchell , the first being Love You To Death. This is yet another exceptional read from this ..author A terrifying tale of abuse and control. Solomon and Rebecca meet at a low point in Rebecca's life., Solomon is a great help and support to Rebecca or so she believes in the beginning. This is a nerve wracking read.. The tension throughout was just brilliant. Several heart stopping moments had me racing through this book wanting answers as to how it was going to end. I will be looking out for more books from this author. |

This was a well written thriller that deals with the world wide problem of domestic abuse. I would recommend this book but you really have to pay attention when are reading because it flips back and forth and it becomes confusing if you let your attention lapse. I would have enjoyed it more had the author kept it simple. |

I would like to thank NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer for giving me the opportunity to read this which I voluntarily reviewed. I have read and enjoyed Ms Mitchell's previous books. This one is different as it is classed as a thriller as opposed to a crime novel. This book deals with a serious topic, domestic abuse, but does so in a sympathetic way due, no doubt, to Ms Mitchell's previous career. The book is told from two points of view, the past from Rebecca's journal and the present from Solomon's perspective. It depicts how the past is always with us. The pace of the story was perfect and kept me turning the pages with bated breath, wondering what was going to happen next. If you want darkness, if you crave thrills this is the book for you. |

You can almost feel the tension in this book. At parts I was almost holding my breath. Listened to this on audible and the narration was excellent. Absolutely brilliant storyline |

Caroline Mitchell's books are amazing. I buy them as gifts and recommend her books to everyone to read! |
This is the second book I have read from this author and after loving the first one I was looking forward to giving this one a go. Another brilliant book, I was gripped from the very beginning of the book. It doesn't let up at all, with lots of twists and edge of the seat moments. Well written and flowed beautifully. A highly recommended psychological trhiller which gets a full 5 stars from me. |
I’m not new to Caroline Mitchell’s writing, however I was still pretty amazed with what she’s done here. Unlike her previous books (published with bookouture), this one (published by Thomas & Mercer) is REALLY a hard core thriller. While I did enjoy her previous books, I have to say I’m not the biggest fan of paranormal and was thrilled to hear she’s writing a more realistic crime now. Witness is not the easiest book to read, not because it’s long or the writing is bad. On the contrary, the writing is great and pulls you in from the start. It’s written from the POV of the ‘witness’ or Rebecca, and the most manipulative sociopath I had the chance to read about, Solomon. The story goes back to 2007 when Rebecca’s life is changed forever, Solomon is sent to prison, and then back to present when he’s released and back to destroy her. But let me start from the beginning… the book opens with a scene where Rebecca, with blood on her hands, holds the body of her dead colleague. The police is here and she reports Solomon, her boyfriend who has such a nasty temper for the murder. Solomon’s dad works for the police, and though Rebecca doubts the police will put Solomon in prison because of his father’s connections, he ends up locked for 10 years. One would say, justice’s been served! Fast forward 10 years and Rebecca has a new life, a husband who cares about her but doesn’t know much about her past. When Solomon is back, he’s still got his hands on her, manipulating her and making her witness and choose the victims he’s about to kill. This is why I say this book is not easy to read, I felt my stomach in knots and even felt sick. Solomon is one nasty mother f@cker and despite hating his guts I feel like applauding to Caroline for creating such a character. He seems so real, his manipulation knows no end and boundaries, he has no respect for anyone, not his father or mother, not Rebecca or the whole society. He’s a real abuser, seeking domination over fragile women. He’s a creepy man and you would want him FAR FAR AWAY from you. While the pace is perfect and there’s never a dull moment in the book, I wasn’t really impressed with Rebecca. As this is a book which has as a main theme domestic violence, and we know tons of women in the world face this problem every day, I had absolute compassion for Rebecca. But I was somehow not convinced and some of her choices were too frustrating. I’ve never talked to a victim of domestic abuse in my life, and I’m thankful to god I’ve never experienced it, however Rebecca’s reactions were sometimes really strange. The book sends a powerful message and I bet Caroline had a tough task and felt a lot of pressure in writing on this topic. If you check Caroline’s GR page (or website) you’ll see she’s a former police detective and has worked with high risk victims of domestic abuse, and serious sexual offences. That being said it’s obvious she has a background and knows a lot about the psychology of both the abused and abusers and this book only proves it. If you’re looking for a gripping thriller or you are a fan of dark, disturbing reads no need to look any further. This is definitely the book for you. |

I enjoyed this book. It was an enjoyable easy read, and you get attached to the main character immediately. You follow her journey as she makes some of the toughest decisions of her life - that quite literally mean life or death. I was intrigued the whole way through! Great read! |
Rebecca is a witness and sends her fiance Solomon to prison for the murder of Jake. Ten years later, Solomon is released from prison on license and he wants revenge. I found Witness a very powerful story. It is a psychological thriller and Caroline’s writing is top quality. She tells a very, very creepy tale and the tension she creates is incredible. Right from the start of her story, my alarm bells were ringing. She mentions things casually in passing and I thought “hang on?” or “you stupid cow!”. Caroline has the art of great storytelling and the characters of Rebecca and Solomon are fully developed. By the end of this novel, you feel as though Rebecca and Solomon are real people who you have worked alongside for maybe a decade. I liked how Caroline chose to write some chapters from Rebecca’s point of view but others from Solomon’s side. You get both sides of this story and it does include some domestic abuse. The story does not build with a linear timeline but wanders back and forth from before Solomon was sent to prison and the current day. Normally this back and forth would drive me bonkers but Caroline used this time shifting purely for you to understand the characters as the psychology is quite deep. Bear with it because Caroline tells a great story and a linear timeline would not have worked. I loved the way details were thrown into this story, which forced you to join up the dots. As you read through the chapters, you constantly think “I wonder if?” and this added so much enjoyment to this book because you felt like a fly on the wall. Because the author is a woman and Rebecca was a victim of domestic abuse, readers may feel this book is aimed only at women. But men should give this book a read too because it is very, very good. Hen pecked husbands could even fantasise about having some control over their wives! Witness is a great story driven by fear and I can find nothing wrong with this novel. Okay, I did wonder who the second man was in the video but that does not really matter! Also the cyclist who spat on a character was later referred to as a jogger but that would be nit picking! Yes, some readers may find the subject of domestic abuse to be uncomfortable but bear with it. Sex is mentioned but there is no graphic sex. Sean who is Rebecca’s husband after Solomon goes to prison, is a vet and animals are included in the story but no harm comes to an animal. What you have is an excellent psychological thriller that gets the top score of 5 stars from me. |

A great suspenseful book that doesn't let you put it down until you're done |
I was approved to read this book by netgalley in return for an honest review. I have read and loved all of Caroline Mitchell's books and this is another gripping read. The story revolves around Rebecca who meets Solomon on a visit to th hospital to see her mother who is suffering from cancer. He becomes her "perfect" boyfriend and she is totally smitten by him but his caring nature is a facade and suddenly he reveals a dark side and he becomes abusive and violent towards and kills a work colleague.. She escapes him and rings the police and reports him and he gets sent to jail. 10 years have passed and Rebecca is now happily married to Sean and they have a little girl. Sean knows nothing about we about which is about to catch up with her because Solomon gets released from prison and is set to avenge Rebecca. This is a fantastic read which will keep you hooked until the very last page! |

Cunning plot and compelling reading - with a final twist to the story which I wasn't expecting. I alternated between wanting to shake the central character and get her to tell someone what's happening, and then wanting to put my arms around her because she's so frightened and intimidated by the events orchestrated against her. The villain of the story is totally believable, someone who has a charming public persona but who in reality is devious and nasty. I thought this book was good - and I'd recommend it. |

This book was an original idea for a psychological thriller, but still achieved what many books do not. What do you do if someone is forcing you to engage in illegal activities, but is watching your every move, and will harm your family if you don't follow instructions to a tee. This book, will make you pity, hate, and many other emotions the character and what she's going through. A book that will give you a roller coaster of emotions. |
OH MY GOD! What a truly twisted story this is! It's utterly brilliant! We start in Rebecca's living room, there's a dead body and her husband is on the run. Fast forward ten years and Rebecca is a mother and farmer's wife. Life is great. Until the phone starts to ring. She knows who it is before she answers. Solomon. Back to exact his revenge on her for leaving him all those years ago. But how far is this revenge going to go? What a fantastic plot! Told from the points of both Solomon and Rebecca, past and present this is one piece of superb writing! I've said before that I think writers who manage to do the then and now story, without loosing my attention, deserve a medal and it's a big massive thumbs up from me on this one! It could easily have been confusing, Caroline could have gone with lots of red herrings and false leads, but she didn't. She kept it 'simple' and I use that term loosely! Very loosely!! The story is detailed and keeps you completely on your toes in terms of what is going to happen next and I bloody loved that! As the past starts to unravel and the present gets more and more unsettled, can Rebecca face up to her past before it's too late for those she loves? I would highly recommend this book, it's a fantastically twisted tale with a baddy you will instantly loath!!! |
Very good thriller. Highly recommended, Would read more from this author. |
