BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE is book seven in Terry Spear's Silver Town Wolf paranormal romance series. All of the books in this Silver Town Wolf series are fun to read, but I think that BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE works as a standalone novel as well. This book is a little different from other books in this series because the hero and heroine are casually dating already when the story opens. The challenge for werewolves Ellie MacTire and Brett Silver is to see if they can take their relationship to the next level, build on their attraction, and make something extraordinary and lasting. Having been burned in the past, Ellie's hesitancy in telling Brett about her ghost whispering abilities and worry over his reaction is holding her back from making a final commitment. This is a perfect book for anybody who enjoys small town romances, great characters, and a good ghost story. Brett Silver carries on Terry Spear's tradition of writing smoking-hot nice guy heroes. Brett has alpha werewolf charm and Clark Kent sweetness, combined with an adoration and dedication to his wolfy ladylove that make him hard to resist. There is a mystery in BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE, and it surrounds the ghost of Brett's late great-aunt Matilda. I love how Ellie and Brett work together and try to solve the mystery of why Matilda's ghost is at the inn that Ellie runs with her sisters, and what really happened to cause her death. My favorite type of romance involves the hero and heroine on the same page, working to solve a puzzle together, and forging a close bond just as Ellie and Brett do. I liked that I was still trying to figure things out right up until the end, just like Ellie and Brett, when it came to deciphering the unresolved issues from Matilda's past. Other ghosts, snow storms, and assorted mischief-makers occasionally conspire to obscure the truth. BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE is a sweet and sexy small town romance with a paranormal twist. Terry Spear injects enough humor to balance the ghost mystery and minor relationship conflicts to make a highly entertaining story. While Ellie and Brett advance their relationship emotionally by day, their sexy shared dreams give free reign to their burgeoning desire for each other at night. As with any werewolf romance by Terry Spear, family and pack unity is a feature of BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE and that's a big part of what makes this book, and this series, so amazing. I hope to read about Ellie's sister, as well as other supporting characters, in future books. I eagerly await the next Terry Spear werewolf romance. |
I’ve always loved shifter romances because you always get the alpha male who gets all growly, possessive, and protective over his female. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the alpha vibe much in this book. Brett, our alpha werewolf hero, is more of a Beta than an Alpha. But before I get into what I didn’t like, let’s get the summary sorted out first. Brett donates his great aunt’s grand piano to Ellie MacTire’s inn (she owns it with her sisters). They also happen to be dating (I guess the relationship started out in the previous book which I hadn’t read). He does it, in part, for brownie points since he doesn’t know if Ellie wants to take the relationship deeper. For those who haven’t read the series, Terry Spear’s shifters do not have fated mates. They do have mates which you can choose. They are all virgins (I believe) because to sleep with another shifter means to mate with him or her forever. So, at this point in the story, the two main characters have yet to even kiss. While the dates have been going well, Ellie is a bit hesitant about furthering their relationship because she has a secret – she can see ghosts. Unfortunately, not everyone (yes, even shifters who are part of the paranormal!) are not accepting of this. And she doesn’t know how Brett would react to it. This could have been a potential conflict between them. It was resolved though in the first few chapters of the book. And everything else that popped up over the course of the story didn’t seem to be true obstacles to our pair’s happily ever after. Beta Brett (as I refer to him in my mind) is sweet and Ellie is also sweet. Maybe they’re both a little too tame for my taste. I liked them individually and I’m always up for a happily ever after between two nice people. But I wasn’t invested in their relationship. There wasn’t that much heat (which apparently is staple for a Terry Spear book) and I’m also all about the heat. To add to this, there seemed to be a bit more telling than showing. So…. while Between a Wolf and a Hard Place is a light, sweet, comfortable romance, it wasn’t something that caught my interest. At least it didn’t at the time of my reading. Maybe when I want something mellow, I’d have a different point of view. But for now, it’s just a 3-star read for me. |
Picking up where the last in the series left off, Between a Wolf and a Hard Place follows the developing relationship between Ellie MacTire, one of the new owners of the Silver Town Inn, and Brett Silver, local news reporter and third–born of the Silver quadruplets. As it revisits the setting and characters that were established in the fifth Silver Town Wolf story, A Silver Wolf Christmas, slipping back into the world of the novel was easy to do. While I’ve really enjoyed this series, as well as those connected to it that I’ve had the pleasure of reading, this particular story didn’t draw me in quite as thoroughly as its predecessors. I can’t help but like the MacTire sisters so far, and the Silver brothers and cousins have all proven to be just as interesting, so the cause of my reaction wasn’t about the characters themselves. All of the wolves are memorable in different ways, and seeing the return of some of my favorites was definitely a nice benefit. Personality-wise, I think Ellie and Brett are a wonderful pair. Ellie’s gift is a secret, and rightfully so, given the reactions she’s experienced in the past. But, Brett has a few surprises of his own that come back to haunt him, the focus of which I thought only made them both more intriguing as a couple. I do wish, though, that their romance had been allowed to develop a little longer over a narrower range of happenings, rather than the multitude of issues they had to contend with. Which is where I felt a little lost on occasion. Rather than bonding with each other while facing down a single threat, and the complications associated with it, Ellie and Brett seemed to be dealing with four or five different conflicts, and at least one of those of their own devising. One thing, in particular, that concerned me was simply a misunderstanding that might have been resolved fairly quickly, but instead plagued the couple throughout the narrative. This, in addition to the reaffirmation of the discord between the MacTires and their troublesome cousins, along with a rescue mission on the side, and so on, distracted me from the main plot of Between a Wolf and a Hard Place more than once. Still, I was very happy with the resolution of the more romantic elements of the story, and truly believed that these two belonged together. While it wasn’t my favorite to this point, Between a Wolf and a Hard Place was still a good addition to the series. The introduction of the MacTire sisters has served it well, and, despite these few issues, I admit to a great deal of curiosity about how things might play out for all the Silver Town wolves in the novels yet to come. Though it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the whole series, if possible, since the background stories of all the characters are fairly extensive and build on one another. As a bonus, mention was also made of the merging with the jaguar shifter companion series, which I’m eager to learn more about, and is something I think has a lot of potential for excellent storytelling in the future. |
I love all kinds of shifter romances, but wolves have and always will be one of my favorites, so when I saw the title and then read the synopsis, I couldn't wait to read Between a Wolf and a Hard Place! It's the first Terry Spear book I've read and it will definitely not be the last. It was excellent and I really enjoyed reading it! I liked Ellie - she's sweet, kind, and compassionate, but she has a fiery, wicked side to her as well. She's warm and giving, but she's certainly no pushover. Ellie does things her own way and I loved that about her. She's a great heroine and I loved getting to meet her! Brett is just as wonderful as Ellie! He's kind, patient, understanding, and he keeps an open mind. He accepts Ellie for who she is and he goes out of his way to assure her that he wants her, supports her, and will do anything he can to help her however she needs. Brett is so sweet and thoughtful - he's totally heart-melting worthy and I completely loved him! I don't know why it happened, but there was something that kept me from connecting with Ellie and Brett one hundred percent. I didn't have any problems with the storyline and even though I loved them both, there was just a part of me that was a little detached from them and their relationship. That didn't stop me from loving the book though and in fact, before I started Between a Wolf and a Hard Place, I was somewhat in my own "between a rock and a hard place" because I couldn't decide on a book until this one. It sucked me in and was a tale full of mystery, humor, sweet sexy times, and some heart pounding, heartwarming moments. It was fantastic and I can't wait to read the next book! Between a Wolf and a Hard Place can be read as a standalone, it's told mainly from Brett and Ellie's POV, and they do get their HEA. ~ A Hopeless Romantic's Booklandia, 4 Stars |
"Between a Wolf and a Hard Place" by Terry Spear. This is a sweet and endearing story - I truly enjoyed it. It's an easy read that is filled with friendship and family, a bit of suspense and even a touch of angst. Everything that is needed to make a story flow and keep the mind and heart of the reader engaged. The characters were real (well, as real as a shifter can be) and likable. Both our Hero and heroine warmed my heart - they were true to each other, even when obstacles appeared in their way. The romance blossoms and blooms and was simply lovely to read. The secondary characters, including Brett's aunt, were fun and added so much to the story. This one certainly falls into the paranormal world, with shifters and ghosts and supernatural stuff but, even with all of that, it is simply a love story. And Ms. Spear did a wonderful job. It's not filled with sex scenes or lusting after the other, but with heartfelt feelings and actions. I say thumbs up for this one! (received ARC for honest review) |
Ellie and her werewolf sisters own a shifter hotel. Brett Silver, an alpha werewolf, has been dating Ellie for a while. They even started having the shared dreams that show you your true mate…But Ellie is afraid to tell Brett about her special ability to see ghost. When Brett brings over his great aunt’s piano, Ellie can’t hide the fact that his great aunt’s ghost came with the piano. Especially when those ghosts hold secrets that uncover the strange happenings in Silver Town. This is not your typical shifter read, Spear writes sweet and building romances that have characters that happen to be shifters. Of course, changing into a werewolf doesn’t happen in your typical contemporary romance and neither do the story’s characters normally have extraordinary abilities as seeing ghosts...but you get my drift. Enjoyable, Entertaining and Easy, Between a Wolf and a Hard Place just hits the spot. There is some action, some suspense, a group of great characters and a cute and endearing romance. ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ A MacTire/Silver romance. Ellie MacTire and her sister have had their Inn in Silver Town open for a while now. They have lived with one ghost that so far hasn’t bothered their guests. Until a piano is delivered to the Inn from the Silver brothers. Their GreatAunt Matilda always loved the piano, but it isn’t until they get the piano to the Inn that the GreatAunt makes her first appearance. Now Ellie and her sister, which help of the Silver brother, Brett, have to work quickly to see if they can get GreatAunt Matilda on her way. The only question is, why after so many years has Matilda decided to make herself know. Is there a mystery to her death or does she just really love her piano and wants to stay with it until eternity. In the meanwhile, Brett Silver knows that Ellie is her mate, but he realizes right away that Ellie is going to take a little time to convince. Are they dream mating, or is Ellie just really attracted to Brett. Once a wolf mates, it is for life, so Ellie really wants to be sure. Solid story that can be read alone or with other parts of the series, especially A Silver Wolf Christmas (Silver Town Wolf Book 5). I like the ghost story and the briefly added comic relief with the sister’s cousins, who have their own ghost hunting television show. |
A great read. Definitely captivating and full of excitement for the reader. |
~ARC from NetGalley.~ Okay...so i was kinda lost on this one. I really liked this series. So are the Silver Wolf Pack. However, I am not really sure how to truly feel with this one. The main theme is the same with CJ's mate. There is still the inn. Then Brett, gave a piano... not not just that. From there, all sort of things started to happen. Some were nice, some were not. But the way the story was written was an okay one for me. There is not much, other than you can really feel how the pack works in this book. Especially the quad. Since, Eric, CJ, and now Brett is mated, all that is left is Sarando? Not sure of the spelling. Looking forward to read his book! |
I believed this is the 2nd novel that I read from the Heart of the Wolf series. I love how headstrong Ellie is and how her ability makes her perfect for Brett. I'm so envious of her for having Brett, who is very romantic, caring and nice. I enjoy the 'ghost' story that Terry Spear incorporates about Aunt Matilda, it is cool! |
It all started with a calculated donation to the Silver Town Hotel. What alpha werewolf Brett had intended was to get the attention of one of the owners, wolf shifter Ellie MacTire. He never expected to find out just how special Ellie was or that his great-aunt’s piano was haunted by a very determined ghost with a message to deliver, a message she knew Ellie would hear. Meanwhile, slow and steady is the course that Brett must take to win Ellie’s heart, but is she just playing hard-to-get or is she really not sure the kind-hearted, but strong Brett is the wolf for her? Is she even ready to settle down and make puppies? Until the ghost of the piano is tamed or freed, these two will spend quality time making sweet music as a supernatural duet. Can Brett learn to believe in the ghosts that Ellie sees or will he become one more wolf on her list of disappointments? And what about the ghost? Will Ellie discover what the message from beyond is? Do NOT expect over the top blood, gore and posturing from Terry Spear or her wolves. There will NOT be pages and pages of sex with some story in between, but there will be romance, a feeling of calm and unity among the werewolves who seem to have made peace with themselves and those around them. A fun read that speaks softly but carries a huge entertainment value. BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE is further proof of the staying power of Terry Spear’s talent as an author. Unfortunately I am unable to provide a review as I was not provided a legible copy to read. Since pdf is what you're offering and not e-pub it should be stated and put it in a reasonable size for humans instead of mice. |

Ok this book was an okay read. It just took a while to actually capture my interests, which could have been for a variety of reasons not just the writing style. Brett Silver has been working his way into Ellie's life because he believes that they are meant to be. And yet she is still holding something back. And that feeling grew when he brought her his great-aunts piano. Now normally that would be a great thing right? Giving the girl you are seriously into something grand to show how much you care about her. But then why did she become pale like a ghost while kissing him next to it? Ellie MacTire has a secret, besides being a wolf, she can see ghosts and get them to cross over. She is going to tell Brett, really she is. It's just that the last wolf she told abandoned her and that is after they had that all important talk. You know the one that I'm talking about. The lets be mates and be together forever talk. But she didn't think she would have to tell Brett about her gift with the example of his deceased great-aunt. This was an okay read, and generally I am not against the whole letting a paranormal being have more than one mystical quality. But for some reason it just did not mesh well with me in this book. I didn't enjoy the extra ghosts, one or two would have been more than enough. But I did enjoy the romance as well as the "you should see other wolves" bit. It made the story extremely enjoyable. And I would highly recommend that part. There was a lot of information in this book, and it took a while to get started but then it ended abruptly. But all in all it was a good read. ~A Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team Selection. |
Anyone for a ghostly chaperone? When Brett decided to donate his aunt’s piano to the Silver Town Hotel he didn’t expect his dead aunt to move in with it. Of course, Brett wouldn’t have a clue because he’s never seen the ghost of his aunt but his potential mate, Ellie certainly has. Having a Victorian era ghost frown upon your first kiss isn’t very conducive to romance. Lord knows what might happen as the hotel fills if this ghost decides to do a little haunting. Now Ellie and her sisters have their hands full trying to figure out how to get their newest ghost to move on. At the same time, Ellie has to decide how to break the news to Brett because if Brett can’t accept her ghostly talents then there really is no future for them. Prepare for a ghostly good time as sensuous dreams lead our hero and heroine further down the road to matehood. Ms. Spears has produced another delightful shifter tale in the Silver Town Wolf series. |
Between a Wolf and a Hard Place (Heart of the Wolf #21) Terry Spear Book Review: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ❣ Between a Wolf and a hard place is part of a bigger series of books, however, can be read as a standalone. It just means you have more to digest at the beginning, but I managed just fine. This is the first book I have read by Terry Spear, and it was an interesting read. Paranormal fantasy romance which is so much more than just a shapeshifter mating story. Ellie is a beautiful wolf with a special gift. She will only date guys who accept her talent. She's had problems in the past and doesn't want to make the same mistake again. Brett is her potential mate, and Ellie needs to tell him about her ghost whispering before things become too heated. Brett wants Ellie more than anything. He knows she's special but hasn't yet found out just how talented she is. A ghost wants Ellie's help, and Brett is a relative. It's linked to an old piano delivered to the inn Ellie owns with her sisters. The family heirloom belongs to Brett's great aunt, and she wants them to solve a mystery. 4.5 stars out of 5. I was gifted this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review Kindle Edition £4.30, 352 pages Expected publication: April 4th, 2017 |
Since the A Very Jaguar Christmas, I hadn't read anything from Terry Spear. So when I saw Between a Wolf and a Hard Place on Netgalley, I had to request it. I was curious if this book was going to give you the same cozy feeling of the jaguar christmas or not. And indeed, Terry just writes in a very relaxing and enchanting way. You meet Ellie and her two sisters, who are running the Silver Town hotel. In this town, there are a lot of wolf-shifters living, so alpha guys defending their territory (read: there girls) is quit normal. And since they are good looking, like Brett, I certainly have no problems with that. Ellie, however, is more hesitant to engage with the romantic guy. Because she has a little secret: she can see and communicate with the dead. And since the last guy she told her secret has been treating her horribly, she is not very open to a new relationship. But clumsy Brett is trying really hard and being very sweet. Makes me want to remind my husband about bringing flowers, LOL. So in all, a very pleasant read, with some excitement here and there. You gotta love Brett's (already deceased) great aunt, because she is hilarious. If you want to have a nice and feelgood read, sit back and relax with Between a Wolf and a Hard Place. Four out of five stars from me. |

Terry Spears new book is loaded with a ghost or three that change the lives of our heroine Ellie and hero Brett. We meet these two in the previous Silver Town Wolf series and the next MacTire sister gets her own story. Ellie's special gift is that she can communicate with ghosts and as Brett has moved his Aunt Matilda's piano into the inn the girls are renovating his aunt has come along. Brett and Ellie are sharing their first kiss when Aunt Matilda makes her appearance. From there, the story of Matilda, Sam and Chrissy the town ghosts set the stage for a mystery among the romance of Brett and Ellie. Keep reading to solve the link between these three lost souls and enjoy "Between a Wolf and a Hard Place". |

I received an ARC of this book and had only read a couple of books in the series prior to this (and not in the proper order), so that might be coloring my opinion but I could not get into this book. Ellie MacTire owns an inn with her two sisters; she's a werewolf shifter and she happens to be able to see ghosts. When the wolf she's dating, Brett, donates his great aunt's piano to the inn, it comes with a surprise--Brett's great aunt's ghost. Ellie hasn't told Brett she sees ghosts and now feels additional pressure since the ghost she's seeing is a beloved family member. The pacing was just very slow and the main conflict of the beginning, her being able to see ghosts and whether or not he'll believe her, was somewhat anticlimactic. There's then the question of whether or not she died of natural causes, but even that just wasn't very exciting. Ultimately I couldn't even finish the book. Part of this might have been my lack of emotional connection to the main characters since the majority of their individual character development seemed to have occurred in a different book--they were already dating when the book starts. |
