The book missed the mark a bit in it's attempt to find the balance between being a book for children while still appealing to the adults who will have to read it for them.

Who doesn't like to hear a good story? and who doesn't like to tell a good story? This book was funny and sweet, with nice illustrations. I plan to buy a copy for my kids soon.

After hours, animals get together for an Open Mic night, and tonight it's Dog Night. ("Domestics only!" reminds a wild animal on the way in.) Dogs get up and tell their stories--playing the best game of fetch he's ever played, or solving crimes with her great sense of smell.

A silly, fun graphic novel that young readers will love.

'Dog Night at the Story Zoo' by Dan Bar-el with illustrations by Vicki Nerino is about a night at the zoo unlike any I would have imagined.

At night when the zoo closes, the animals come together for an interesting event. They gather together in a swanky nightclub and have story slams.

On this night, as you can guess from the title, it's time for the dogs to tell their stories. There are 4 different dogs that tell their tales. One loves playing fetch. One likes to bark. One is good at solving crimes.

The book is a fully illustrated graphic novel. The art is pretty good. The stories are good for younger readers, although the idea of a story slam or a night club might go over their head.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Penguin Random House Canada, Tundra Books, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

I wanted this to be better than its reality. It didn't have enough focus. Dogs doing stand-up. Dog Memoirs. That kind of thing. Instead we have this odd collection of stories. I was never sure if they were intended to be funny. What humor there is in the stories is likely too subtle for young readers. Add in teh sketchy art style and the appeal level is relatively low.

Most dogs have a tale to tell but these dogs get to do it in front of the zoo animals. The only caveat is that the story has to be about them. Have they got a lot to tell!

Tundra Books and Net Galley let me read this book for review (thank you). It will be published July 4th.

There's a dog that likes to fetch. (I have a Bengal cat that likes to fetch. She'll make your arm fall off.) His fetching finally finds him an owner.

There's a bulldog that doesn't want to be judged by his looks. A bloodhound who suddenly lost his sense of smell. A yappie poodle that finds a perfect home with an older lady.

Each animal tells its tale with illustrations that show you how it all turned out. It's a fun easy read for young ones.

I did not realize this was graphic fiction until I started reading. I personally loved this book. Clever with several laugh out loud moments. The students at my elementary school have been huge into graphic fiction and are always eager when I get something new in that genre. I think this will make a great addition to my collection.

I didn't enjoy this one. The formatting and story both need to be revised.
