Lock the Door had me turning pages and predicting what would happen next from the very beginning. |
It is very rare that a book written in first person works. In my experience, it never works when it is used for a thriller. And this book is not an exception. I could not get into this book at all, the main character, who's head I am supposed to be in throughout this story, is simply annoying. I really did not like this book. |

Pretty good thriller that's a fast read because it's a page turner. Meghan is a good sympathetic character. Holland has done a nice job of capturing her panic and distress, as well as her determination to find Harry. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC- this is the first time I've read Holland but I'm going to look for her again. It's always hard to write review of this sort of book because of spoilers but you'll like this if you enjoy British fiction. |

thanks you. enjoyed it. will get copies for family and friends. |
From the off, a sense of foreboding is instilled in the reader, as is the bewilderment of the main character, Meghan Smith, upon learning of her baby son, Harry's condition. Meghan's response to the news is at odds with her husband's, Jon, who appears to lack compassion. The tension of their situation takes the reader from one page to the next, and when Harry is swiped from his bedroom cot and stolen away, the tension and the stakes rise. With a baby snatcher loose and hitting the headlines, the police concentrate their efforts on tracking him or her down, but Meghan, heartbroken, receiving no support from her husband, and desperate to find her baby boy, starts to suspect others of the crime. With as many twists and turns as a country mile, this thriller is fast-paced and action-packed. At times sinister, at others unnerving and disconcerting, the reader is swept along, experiencing Meghan's desperation and applauding her conviction, but continually guessing and second-guessing who committed the crime, as everyone is under suspicion. Highly recommended read. |

A real page turner, was on the edge of my sofa for the whole book, the pages flew by! |
Every feeding, outing and moment of baby Harry’s life is carefully planned since finding out that he has a medical condition that makes him susceptible to infections which can be deadly. For Meghan and Jon this means their relationship has endured a lot of stress but for one evening everything finally seems to be going well as they celebrate their anniversary with their friends. While baby Harry is sleeping in his bedroom the couples are enjoying the evening, drinking and being in the garden not in the least worried about Harry until the parents find out that Harry is no longer in his crib and has disappeared. Meghan is scared an angry and she knows that every minute Harry is away could be life or death for him. The police question the parents and friends but there are few clues. The police fear that this is a case of a serial kidnapper. There is tension right from the start in wanting to know what is wrong with Harry to being suspicious of almost every character in the book. I especially liked the parts where Meghan feels like she sees Harry and almost questions her sanity. I can imagine how that could happen in such a stressful situation. This was an easy read but don’t feel like you’ll be in for a complex mystery. There was a good buildup of suspense especially towards the end but I didn’t buy the “why”. I thought the explanation was a bit too far-fetched. |
Easy but gripping read. I've read quite a few books revolving around a missing child, and this is one of the better ones. It's written well and doesn't come across as the same old story. The fact that little Harry has medical problems and required more care than most infants definitely added a frightening element to the story. Having your child taken would obviously be terrifying, but what if that child requires important medication twice a day? Very unnerving. Meghan's life completely revolves around her darling little boy. While he husband works, she stays home with their baby son. Young Harry was unfortunately born with a condition that makes him very susceptible to sickness and infection. She has to be careful to keep him and their home as germ free as possible. She is incredibly protective over him and rarely leaves his side... but sometimes a few minutes is all it takes for something disastrous to happen. While she and her husband entertain their friends in the garden, someone has entered their locked home and made off with their child as he slept, taking some of his medications with him. He's not the only baby that's disappeared lately, and they fear he's been taken by a serial kidnapper. How will he survive without Meghan to administer his injections and care for him? As the hours and then days pass, it seems the likelihood of finding her only child alive is shrinking... but never underestimate a mother's love. I was given an ARC of this book from Net Galley and Thomas & Mercer, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased. |
I'm always a little wary about books with missing children, but I will say, this one held my attention, and didn't feel gratuitously terrible. It was well-plotted, with intriguing characters and a fast-paced storyline. Meghan was a very interesting character, I wanted to know more about. This author is talented in creating a specific atmosphere and delivering a stunning ending! |

A really enjoyable book with interesting characters. The tension built well and there was a very unexpected ending.. |
4,5/5 ☆ I received copy for free from netgalley.com in exchange of an honest review. Meghan an Jon seem to have everything: they are young, in love, have their own home, good jobs, and the most important thing - they got blessed with child, a boy named Harry. But not all is as it seems... Harry was born with potentially deadly disease - even something simple as common cold could end up killing him. Everything starts on the day of their third anniversary. First, there is some lady with Cornish accent standing over Harry when Meghan was with him shopping and left him alone for a few seconds. Next there is mysterious golden Volvo parked nearby their home. What worse, there is a child snacher in town. Then happens unthinkable: someone takes Harry from his room. Police is looking for him, but there isn't much they can do. When it seems nothing more can go wrong Jon first accuses Meghan that she has affair with neighbor, Treve, then, when she doesn't confess to it, he hits her and leaves. When her marriage seems to come to an end, she onece again sees golden Volvo. She follows the car, and at the end of journey learns the truth about kidnapping. She gets her child back (how could it be otherwise?) and learns how to live after what happens. It suprised me how Meghan and Jon had completely different reactions to kidnapping. Especially Jon. Sure he cried a little at the beginning but later he seemed so detached, that I started wondering if he was somewhat guilty? And that Cornish accent - I was sure it was a clue, but it didn't really come into play till later. I can honestly say that I suspected the right pearson, but wasn't expecting the ending. Overall good job ;) What to know what exactly happened and who was the kidnapper? I urge you to read the book, you won't be disappointed. |
Lock the Door Wow! What a fab read. There have been a lot of books published recently that involve missing children, and although they can make for difficult reading, I seem to find myself drawn to them. They rarely fail to disappoint. Lock the Door is one of them. Harry has a life threatening condition which means that his mother is very protective and never far away. Then Harry goes missing and Meghan's world will never be the same. Where is Harry? Who can she trust? This is a superb psychological thriller, it will keep you guessing till the end, thoroughly recommended!! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book, with thanks to Netgalley and the publisher. 5* |
I've read some great books already this year and this is a 5* read for me. Meghan has a little boy who has a severe medical condition that makes her a little bit protective over him. When he disappears whilst they are having a dinner party with friends and neighbours, her husband seems to lose patience with her and blame her mental state for leaving the door open to the 'Cornish Snatcher' who has been taking babies around Truro. Meghan is sure that she had locked the door- but events seem to suggest that the ordeal is taking it's toll. Her husband isn't providing the loving support you'd expect- and maybe he does blame her. It's full of suspense and one of those books that you really can't put down and would love to read in one sitting. You totally lose track of time turning the pages, trying to see if she will ever see her baby again. We learn more about the people who were at the party and that things aren't as rosy for any of the couples as you'd think on the surface. We follow the police procedure and can experience the heartbreak and trauma families go through when they have a child abducted. A truly nerve wracking read. |
Jane Holland is a fantastic storyteller. Her last book, Girl Number One, I read in one sitting. This latest offering is no different. The story starts with married couple, Meghan and Jon, and their new baby, Harry. We begin by them receiving the news from Harry's consultant that he is poorly, very poorly, and will need lifelong treatment and regular injections to give him the best chance in life. Friends rally round, and, with their wedding anniversary looming and them not being able to leave Harry, they decide to have a dinner party. With it being warm outside, they have the table set up in the garden and Jon's friend and his partner arrive, along with their next door neighbours. All is going well, until they check on Harry. He is nowhere to be seen. Gone from his cot without anyone seeing anything at all. Who's took Harry, and what do they want? This starts of a chain reaction of suspicion, thrills, and a twist in the tale, and I fully admit I was so absorbed in the storyline that I did not guess what happened next. If you're looking for a book that leaves you wanting just one more chapter, make this your next one! |
A really immersive read. I couldn't put it down from page one until the end. A very memorable story told by a talented author. I really enjoyed it. |
Infant Harry has a disease that has made his mother a bit paranoid about germs. And, since he needs medication twice a day, she has a right to be. So when Harry is kidnapped during a dinner party, Meghan goes a bit crazy: chasing people when she thinks she hears his cry, attacking a neighbor and accusing him of the kidnapping, etc. The police are amazingly wonderful about the whole thing, even when she shows up at an unrelated crime scene, but relations with her husband become strained. They say these things either bring a couple closer together or tear them apart. How Meghan deals with what is going on around her makes Harry's actual kidnapping a secondary plot line. But it also makes for a really good book with a very unexpected ending! |

Excellent !!!!! This story is written in such an easy way that the reader is drawn in from the very beginning and interest is held right the way through. There are so many twists that I couldn't decide who the "baddie" was. And what a powerful ending. WOW !!! Don't miss this book |
Wow!! This book has kept me reading until the early hours of the last few nights as I just could not put it down. A fantastic thriller which really did have me guessing until the very end. It is every mother's nightmare for her child to be taken. The ups and downs and twists and turns that happen to Meghan as she desperately searches for her missing son, kept me on the edge of my seat. The ending is a brilliant climax which I never saw coming. A great psychological thriller which I would highly recommend!!! |
