This is a lovely, educational book about bears. It gives just the right amount of information, and the illustrations are gorgeous!

Learn about ursines in question and answer method. Example:
WHERE DOES THE BEAR LIVE?
There are rocks, trees…. And look! There’s a cave!
Nicely descriptive without getting verbose. I’m liking this for adults, other than the simple language, though it’s perfect for kids. Small and simple but bright colorful paintings tell most of the story.
Facts and glossary at the end.

Exquisite illustrations of bears (and other animals). Actually, the cover illustration chosen doesn't do the artwork inside the book justice. Informative discussion of bears, their habits and habitats, lifestyle, and activities. A glossary and facts about types of bears are included. For animal and nature lovers, here is a worthwhile addition to your child's library. A caveat: some may take issue with the author's mention of man's interest in bears for forty thousand years. Nevertheless, five stars for an otherwise well-done work.

Author Renne (which is the pseudonym for Belgian author Renée Rahir) has created a very beautiful picture book, which offers the young nature lover all the interesting facts there are to know about the big brown omnivore.

Enhanced with stunning artwork on every page, the kids discover how and where the brown bear lives, his favourite food, why he hibernates and much, much more.
Children will enjoy the superb illustrations of the cute bear cubs and they’ll see how they learn to forage for food.

All the other members of the bear family (polar bear etc.) are also shown and a map highlights the continents where the brown bear lives.
Difficult words, like habitat, are explained in a glossary at the end of the book.

The Bear is an early non-fiction book, aimed at children older than 5, but personally, I feel, the book is more suitable for kids at least 8 or 9.
There’s quite a bit of text to read and complicated words like life expectancy or plantigrade mammal, a child of six simply isn’t familiar with.
However, I tried the book with my son, he’s now six, and he got most of the facts by looking at and hugely enjoying the superb artwork.

Overall, The Bear is a very beautiful young (but not too young) nature lovers delight, and also a first class reference book for primary school teachers and school libraries.

This is obviously planned to be the first book in a new series, called Animals in the Wild, and because it’s my kind of book, I’m really looking forward to the next ones.
Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this book and thought it would be a wonderful introduction for young children to learn more about bears. I love that it's a non-fiction book that is aimed at this age group and the books takes the reader through the life of a bear. It was really well set out and definitely one I'd recommend as there are also some fun facts and great images and detailed illustrations.

This was a great nonfiction book about bears intended for children five and up. It has so much information for a young reader or listener to learn about brown bears specifically. The illustrations are very colorful, and have good detail in them. I would recommend this for school libraries and classrooms, as well as at homes with children who love learning about wild animals.
