The recipes seemed interesting and worth a try. What I loved: different sections for all types of bread, entrees, desserts, and sauces. Each recipe was intriguing and had me thinking of trying them.

Wow!! The Harvest Baker is so much more than a cookbook! I love the focus on healthy cooking by using fruits & veggies that are in season.

I learned so much & found amazing recipes that I will be making for a long time to come.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Storey Publishing and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of The Harvest Baker: Sweet and Savory Baked Goods Made with Fresh Vegetables and Herbs. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.

Harvest baking can be done by anyone, in any city or town around the globe. Simply put, harvest bakers use wholesome foods, locally sourced if possible, used in ways that nourish the body. This cookbook is quite readable, as the author has a good writing style and a manner of speaking right to the reader. Besides having useful tips and information regarding bakeware, kitchen tools, and growing a successful kitchen herb garden, there are a plethora of tempting recipes that are sure to make the mouth water for even those with discriminating tastes.

There are morning muffins, biscuits, and scone recipes with interesting ingredients, such as Bacon, Cheddar, and Fresh Corn Muffins (p. 29), which can be served as an accompaniment to meals from breakfast through dinner. Ricotta, Lemon, and Blackberry Muffins (p. 31) include sour cream for a more tangy bite as a perfect contrast to the sweet and delicious blackberries. The Butternut Squash Crumb Muffin recipe (p. 34) includes the directions on how to make the butternut squash puree, which is very helpful to bakers who desire to make this unique muffin. The Mashed Potato Biscuits (p. 40) are an excellent way to use leftovers in a tasty and delicious breakfast treat. With helpful pages throughout the cookbook with advice and hints for success, The Harvest Baker can be an asset to even the most experienced baker. The accompanying photos will tantalize the palate and encourage readers to start baking.

Other sections of the cookbook include: Sweet and Savory Quick Breads and Tea Loaves (Pumpkin Soda Bread, p. 52, and Corn-Off-The-Cob Sour Cream Cornbread, p. 67), Yeast Breads, Rolls, and Buns (Great American Potato Bread, p. 78, Herb and Veggie Flowerpot Bread, p. 85, and Potato and Onion-crusted Burger Buns, p. 94), Harvest Pizzas, Flatbreads, Calzones, and Other Stuffed Breads (Italian Sausage and Broccoli Rabe Pizza, p. 109), Savory Harvest Pies (Tomato Slab Pizza, p. 195), Cookies and Bars (Blueberry Oatmeal Crumb Bars, p. 223), Cakes, Sweet Pies, and Crostatas, and The Harvest Baker's Pantry. While it is impossible to mention all of the delicious recipes in this cookbook, I know that readers of all skill levels will be able to find multiple offerings that will suffice.

I can always tell how good a cookbook will be by how many recipes I mark on the first pass through. The Harvest Baker by Ken Haedrich is one of those books. Offering everything from muffins and quick breads, pizzas and pies, and cakes, The Harvest Baker offers something for everyone. I enjoyed the beautiful photographs and easy to follow recipes. It is not often that I review a cookbook and know that I must add it to my library. I found more than enough recipes, such as fresh mint brownies and mushroom, spinach, and blue cheese-stuffed baguettes, to make it worth the purchase.

I couldn't wait for this book to be released! Where to start?! I was so excited to find this book! It's all about baking sweet and savory dishes:
breads, pies, tarts, potpies, etc..., using your garden or farmers market produce. I especially loved learning I could bake in flower pots! Recipes are wonderful: lots for those tomatoes if you grow too many, like me! and fresh fruit- I especially appreciated the peach ones as my family always loves those come August! But there are many, many more recipes to explore in this wonderful cookbook and I intend to use many of them!

I love this book. I want to bake and eat absolutely everything!

Beautiful illustrations, well written recipes. Definitely one for my hardback collection as soon as it's released in that format. My only slight grumble would be it's all in American measurements (cups) - g or oz would be really helpful.

Interested in using fresh produce in your baking? Ken Haedrich’s cookbook, The Harvest Baker: 150 Sweet & Savory Recipes Celebrating the Fresh-Picked Flavors of Fruits, Herbs & Vegetables is the perfect addition to your cookbook library. It seems most of us have produce in our fridges and gardens that needs to be used up, and this book has recipes that take fruit and vegetable filled baked goods to a much higher level than the ubiquitous zucchini bread and plain blueberry muffins.

The Ricotta, Lemon, and Blackberry muffins were not only easy to make, but very delicious. Homemade muffins are totally different from the store bought variety (which essentially are just pound cake in muffin form), and Haedrich includes several good ones including Bacon, Cheddar, and Fresh Corn Muffins and Butternut Squash Crumb Muffins. There is a recipe for Potato, Bacon and Blue Cheese Pizza that turns out perfectly and is delicious, as well as a trendy Winter Squash Pizza with Baby Kale. Also included are several recipes using potatoes, both fresh and leftover mashed, that will certainly appeal to almost everyone. The Back Bumper Blueberry Cream Cheese Pound Cake is also delicious, and there are dessert recipes like Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cookies and Blueberry Gingerbread. There are also several mouthwatering recipes using peaches.

Some of the desserts utilize vegetables, like the Chocolate Beet Cake and the Honey Parsnip Cake with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting. Of course there are some zucchini recipes, as well as desserts calling for carrots, green tomatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and potatoes.

The recipes are easy to understand with step-by-step instructions. Most call for ingredients that are easy to find and often are already on pantry and refrigerator shelves. There are dozens of pictures, all excellent, but unfortunately not a picture of each recipe, which may be the only drawback to this cookbook.

All told, anyone who loves to bake and loves to use fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs in baking, will appreciate this cookbook.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

This is a great baking book, full of bread, biscuits, pizza, flatbreads, dough, tartlets, pies, cookies cakes and crostatas! There are 150 recipes, which makes for a great value. Savoury and Sweet are both included, along with tips on how to make ingredients like vegetable purees. The book is divided into four sections to cover Bread, Entrees, Desserts and Toppings / Sauces.

One thing I did not love was that although the book had many photographs, more often they were photographs of the ingredients rather than the end result of the recipes. While I do not hate looking at photographs of sweet potatoes or squash, I prefer to see an end result of what the dish should or could look like.

A very competent book on baking savoury and sweet items.

I had the opportunity to make the Peanut Butter and Apple Crumb Muffins. They are delicious and I can't wait to try some other recipes. The ingredients and techniques are everyday and accessible. The information at the top of each recipe is helpful and illuminating. Great cookbook.

Yummy is all I can say about this book. I loved the recipes but wished they had a few more. I will definitely be adding a hard copy to my cookbook collection

This is a great cookbook for a wide variety of diverse recipes involving fresh produce and other ingredients. The learning curve for novice cooks isn't too great, and there is some learning of cooking methods along the way as well. A handy addition to the kitchen for those looking to incorporate more seasonal whole foods into their diets. I received a preview copy from NetGalley, but all opinions are my own.
