Quick review for a quick read. Leave it to Nina LaCour to tug at my heartstrings every single time I pick up a book from her. For what it's worth, I did enjoy "We Are Okay" though it wasn't as strong for me as some of the author's other narratives (a.k.a "Hold Still"). It's the story of a young woman named Marin who escapes her life after a series of tragedies and has to come to terms with them as her best friend reunites with her over Winter Break while she's in college. I wasn't surprised by Marin's actions given that I knew she was in a state of denial, grief, and anguish, but it was the reasons behind those emotions that kept me pushing through the novel to see them in full. I'll admit that at times the delivery of these story details is uneven and took me some time to push through, but I always respect and appreciate the genuine way LaCour's able to dig into the raw emotions of her characters. There's much that haunts Marin, and it takes an exploration of the past meeting the present to bring it together (trading between months of memories and present details). I appreciated the range of emotions and coming to terms that Marin shows through the narrative, and felt for her on the note of her relationships with her mother and grandfather, as well as her best friend Mabel and roommate Hannah. The narrative features a prominent character of color and a lesbian relationship with enough moments to feel for the characters even through the events that affect them. I enjoyed getting to know the range of characters in this book and thought it did a fine job of showcasing the dedication of people around Marin to let her know she wasn't lost or forgotten, though her journey after her experiences had her mentally wading through some dark places (some of which I'll admit resonated with me because I've been in that headspace as a result of loss - in more ways than one - before. I don't know if I'd even think to do what Marin did ultimately, but I could see the reasons behind her behavior.) In the end, it was a solid reading experience for me, a story that I could definitely get behind though it did take some wading through slower, uneven moments in the narrative to get there. Overall score: 3.5/5 stars. |
I enjoyed the first four chapters of this netgalley excerpt and want to read more. It felt fresh to have a story about a girl raised by her grandfather who died recently. Also Marin is a lesbian and the narrative is set at college, which makes it all the more original. The writing was beautiful. This YA novel was released last week in the USA. |
Immediately after reading this sneak peek, I opened up my library app and requested that they purchase the book, so you could say I liked it. I will definitely be reading the full version as soon as I can get my hands on it. |
Wish I could have read the whole thing, instead of just a sneak peak! |
I was really excited and pleased to read an excerpt of Nina LaCour's new book, We Are Okay. The main character, Marin, has an easy to read style and is a protagonist that I'm excited to meet and introduce people to. Marin has a life she never talks about. Between New York and the coasts of California, La Cour has provided an amazing backdrop to a Must Know More Story. |
I am already hooked by the story. The characters are so interesting and complex, the relationships are as well. I definitely want to see where the story will go. I hope for more flashbacks with her grandpa in them too. I can't wait to get my hands on a full copy of this. |
Interesting intro to what promises to be great writing with a relatable storyline. The portion I read drew me in to Marin's life and troubles leaving me with the strong desire to find out more. The reviews in the beginning make me think that the YA story will be relatable to many and that the writing stays on it's engaging course. This is a book I will definitely purchase to give me closure on the questions I have hanging over my head concerning Marin's journey and resolution. Good job! |
So I have seen plenty of people talking about this book for a while. I went in not knowing anything about the book. I have to say I was intrigued by the cover of the book. I overall enjoyed this sneak peak. I thought the story was interesting. I really want to pick this up soon. I want to know more about Marin and Mabel's relationship. I have some predictions for this book and I would love to see if they end up playing out or if things end up going differently. It is a little bit of a sad story but not everything has to be happy. I do hope there ends up being a happy outcome. I really can't wait to find out what happens next. |
Loved this sneak peek! I can't wait to read this book ASAP. It is fantastic!! |
I'm not rating this because this is a sneak peek, and I haven't read the entire book (yet?). I'm not sure how many pages the sneak peek is, but it took me maybe half an hour to read so I feel like it was a decent introduction. We Are Okay is about loss, grief, and loneliness. I can assume that it's also about overcoming these things. It's a quiet, character driven story about Marin who's hiding away at college after her grandfather dies. She's cut contact with everyone she knew, until her friend from back home comes to stay at her dorm for three days in at attempt to get her to come back with her. I found myself wanting to know what's going to happen to Marin and what exactly happened to her grandfather. I might pick up the book and finish it because I enjoyed what I've read this far. It seems like it could be an emotional read that packs a good punch. |
The little bit I read I really liked! I will need to wait and read the rest before a proper review. |
I enjoyed this sample. I am excited to read the remainder of this novel. Very interesting story! |

What an amazing glimpse into the raw pain that this young woman is living through. I can not wait to read the rest of this book! I was so disappointed when my "Sneak peak" ended! |
I had heard a lot of good things about this book, so I jumped at the chance to read this excerpt. However, I realized that I didn't really know anything about this book at all. After this brief sample, I'm far more intrigued. I can't wait to read the full book when it comes out! |
I received this preview just a few hours before the book came out but I didn't mind at all. So i could already start my journey with this gorgeous girl. I started reading the book at midnight when it plopped up on my kindle and loved it a lot. |
Only a preview/sneak peek is available, so it's hard to review a partial book because I'm not privy to the whole story. The writing is stellar and the descriptions rich with details. I very much enjoyed this author's ability to write. Having said that, however, I found that the book starts out too slow. I get that the story should build, but I found myself wondering why it is taking so long for her friend to get to the dorm. Once her friend arrives, it seems like the story starts to pick up the pace and I have a stronger sense of the conflict that might unfold. For this genre, I think the pacing should be much quicker. I will need to buy this book to see what happens next because the sneak peek ended too soon. :). |

This was such a beautiful glimpse into the book. There is something special about Marin that draws you into her world. There is a isolated loneliness, surrounded by mystery that her voice is dying to be heard. They mystery of her past is one that makes this worth diving into to see what happens. |

I am intrigued by his sneak peek. I really like this author, so I figured it was worth a try. Now I'm super curious about what is going on and already into these characters who are barely introduced in such a short snippet, and I need to get the full book! |
I usually stay away from sneak peeks or samplers - it's either all or nothing for me. But this one was an exception. I adore Nina LaCour & seriously loved "Everything Leads to You." I've been excited about "We Are Okay" since buzz abut it's release started & jumped at the chance to read a small portion of it. Needless to say, I enjoyed this little tidbit immensely &, as it was released yesterday, I will be picking it up soon to finish! |
I have had We Are Okay by Nina LaCour on my book to buy list for weeks now and I can’t wait to buy it. So when I found a Sampler chap on Netgalley, I was like it can’t hurt to see if I like the book. I downloaded the sampler immediately. So here is my thoughts and feelings on the story so far. The first things I notice about the sampler is that Nina, really draws you into this hauntingly descriptive story. I love that Nina is so descriptive, it makes me want to read the rest of the story. (which I will be doing as soon as I can). I could tell from the beginning of the sampler, that this story was about Mental Illness or something close to it. Only after sneaking around Goodreads, (by the way my Goodreads is link below, Shameless Plug,) that this story is actually about Grief, something that is personal to me. Nina’s writing was so good that I read the ebook sampler in one sitting, I can’t wait for the actual book. I love the eerie calm descriptiveness of the book, it attracts me even more. Of course I will have a better review up when I have read the actual book.(Personally, I retain more information from an actual book.) So as for this sampler, right now I would totally give it a four out of five stars. I love the cover of the book, I feel like the colors and the way they are laid out fit the book so well. As I said I will be back with a bigger review when Ive read the book. All of the information for this author and the book will be listed below, as well as my information. |
