Sammy’s review of Dating the Undead (Undead Dating Service, Book 1) by Juliet Lyons
Paranormal Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 02 May 17

I have been on a Vampire book binge lately. This book looked promising and I have never read this author. I figured I would give it a chance, and with a blurb by Katie MacAlister, it was a no-brainer. I have been on such a winning streak reading new-to-me authors, I was very excited to dive right in. Unfortunately, this book was just not my cup of tea. I only read 25% of the book and skimmed the last few chapters. I’m really glad I didn’t force myself to read it to the end, because the ending would have had me throw my precious Paperwhite against my stone fireplace.

Silver Harris is at a bar with her date on New Year’s Eve when her date ditches her for another chick, and she was having none of that. A big scene is made and she storms off, stealing someone’s Chanel coat and forgetting her purse inside. As she runs out of the bar, she bumps into the very handsome Logan Byrne, who happens to be a vampire. He knows she stole the coat and goes in to retrieves her purse for her. They share some banter and he walks her home. Of course, there are some drunk guys being rowdy, making lewd remarks, and Logan, the very old gentleman vampire, is having none of that. Let me make note that Silver has red hair and she’s sassy. When I typed that, I rolled my eyes up into my head. Silver is very sarcastic, and at times I really thought sassy was the wrong descriptor. Her tongue is probably equipped with barbed wire, the red hair just added to the cliche. I just didn’t like Silver from the moment she stole the coat. She’s petty and mean. Silver and Logan do share a hot kiss and that kept me semi-interested.

Logan is a low-key vampire. He’s lived for hundreds of years and he chooses to live in a hovel, because it’s where he was raised and reminds him of his human life. He also has a Sire he has to answer to. The big bad vampire owns a bar where humans go to be the appetizers. These vampire bites are very addictive and it’s a lucrative business. So is the V-Dating website where humans can hook up with vampires. While Logan is off the page, Silver is really into the bite Logan gave her and her sister talks her into joining the V-Dating site. After she fills out her profile, she hooks up with another vamp and lets him bite her. The next day at her job, the police show up wanting her to be a snitch about how the vampires work. Meanwhile, Logan’s Sire knows that they are sniffing around and tells Logan to open an account and check out what’s going on with that website.

Finally, Logan and Silver are back on the same page and they meet up. She’s playing coy and hard to get, yet she lets him into her apartment when they start to get frisky and we are in Logan’s head.

“When I look down and see my swollen manhood thrusting in her exquisite, ivory hand, I lose it completely. Shouting her name as I fall apart, I hold her to me, burying my face in her hair.”

Swollen manhood just doesn’t work for me. I mean, we are in 2017 and I don’t care how old this vampire is or what nationality, swollen manhood is just a big NO. Just yuck. He now how his hands down her panties and her phone rings and instead of letting it go to voicemail, she answers. It turns out to be her childhood friend Ollie. She tells Ollie that she was still coming to see him and Logan tells her she’ll be coming all over his face. Ollie is asking her who’s there and she tells him it’s the television and hangs up. Logan asks her who Ollie is and she asks him if he’s jealous, then he plays it off like it’s no biggie.

“I scoff. Jealous? Me? What could he possibly have that I don’t?” She shrugs. “A heartbeat.” I slap a hand playfully to my chest, as if mortally wounded. “Low blow, Silver. Even for you.” She stands swinging her arms beside her. “I should get ready.” It’s hard to believe that only moments ago, her hand was in my pants as I unraveled around her. The air has turned fifty shades of awkward.”

After this I had enough. I can honestly say I just couldn’t stand Silver. I skimmed to the end chapters and after reading how things ended, no, no, no, no. Not for me. I like my immortals to stay immortal. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Grade: DNF

Dumped by her date and thrown out of a New Year’s Eve party, Silver Harris is feeling down on herself. Then she meets a charming vampire on the way home and they share a memorable New Year’s kiss. But Silver doesn’t get his name, much less a phone number. So, hoping to find him again, she signs up with the vampire dating site V-Date.com.

The London police have a plan to use the site to gather intel on vampires, who while out to the public are still not big on sharing, and they plan to recruit Silver to spy for them. But the vampires are on to the plan and Logan Byrne is sent to glamour the informant before she can pass on any details. Of course, the spy turns out to be the woman he kissed on New Year’s Eve and hasn’t been able to get out of his head.

Dating the Undead is not the first instance of a supernatural dating service I’ve ever read about, but it certainly used it in an interesting way. That basically sums up how I felt about the vampires too. Their powers are more or less what you’d expect, but there’s just enough newness in the mythos, mostly involving how they’re turned, to keep it feeling fresh.

I really enjoyed Logan and Silver’s whirlwind romance. Her quirky personality and her oddball family make the story lots of fun until all the serious vampire business intrudes. Yeah, I totally saw that part coming. What I didn’t predict was how their HEA would come about—I pretty much had it backward.

I did have a few issues with the story though. The goal of the police investigation isn’t really clear and Silver’s role sounds more like an undercover cop than a civilian informant. And there was really no plot-related reason for Silver to work in a jewelry store, so it would have made so much more sense for her to work in with the police department in some capacity. There’s also some backstory involving Silver’s mother that didn’t quite work for me.

But overall I thought Dating the Undead was a fun way to get a quick paranormal romance fix. (I have sudden vampire cravings sometimes. Don’t you?) I’d certainly be willing to read more in the series.

This was an ok read. I really couldn't root for Silver, she wasn't that likable at times. The chemistry seemed off since she was lying to him throughout most of the story. It was well written, had some humorous and hot moments.

It’s Bridget Jones with vampires in this fresh and funny paranormal romance from debut author Juliet Lyons

When Silver Harris kisses sexy Irish vampire Logan Byrne on New Year's Eve, she knows other humans just won't suffice. Convinced she'll never see him again, she joins the uber-popular vampire dating site, V-Date.com.

What Silver doesn't know is that the site is more dangerous than she could ever imagined, and soon she's in over her head. When Logan returns, sparks fly and attraction sizzles, but they'll have to escape some very real demons if they have any chance of lasting forever.

Review:

That blurb really does a good job of giving the feel of this book.

It is a little fun, a little sexy with a little mystery thrown in for good measure. Silver is awesome! Loved her spunk and inner voice and she can kick butt when needed. Logan has such a sad and tragic past before meeting Silver, from his start in life to becoming a vampire. I loved the ending for the two of them, I thought it was perfect a wove the story complete. Silver and Logan have great chemistry too. The suspense and mystery's that are going on throughout the story with regards to Silver's mom and with the V-Date.com were unique and fun to read.

Loved the story and cannot wait to read more by this Author!

Read me my Miranda rights because I'm DANGEROUS!

I think I'm going to lurk around corners on New Year's Eve and offer my neck to devilishly handsome vampires. Haven’t you heard?... It's a thing now.

We first meet Silver Harris on New Year's Eve. Her date is snogging some trumpet *snort* so she justifiably kicks him in the groin and gets kicked out of the party. I'm surprised she doesn't Carrie Underwood his car... oooh but I'm sure she's thinking about it! She doesn't need him anyways. What Silver needs is to find a quick, easy, no-strings-attached fling. Lucky for her she doesn’t have to look far because her "New Year's kiss" finds her. Goodbye tall, dark, and blandsome. Hello Logan Byrne!

Logan Byrne --

…

Sorry, I lost my train of thought because I PASSED OUT. *fanning face*

Logan Byrne is a VampyVamp hunk of a man. Too bad he’s just looking for a fling. Oh wait… so is Silver! What a coinkydink! Except... after having a taste of Silver Harris, Logan is officially transfixed; he suddenly doesn’t want short-term.

So now we have Logan - this dreamy specimen - chasing after Silver who doesn’t want commitment. Aye! The conundrum. She can still look, though…

"If he’s going to cruise the streets looking this sexy, he should expect a violent eye assault or two."

After the thrill of meeting Logan, Silver decides that dating vampires might bring her some much needed excitement. She registers for a dating site called V-Date where VampyVamps and humans mingle. 😏 Finally she can date and have no strings attached! Because who in their right mind would ever think a vampire and human could work long-term? (Answer: Logan)

“'I mean, you were making all kinds of noises. It sounded like you enjoyed it.' Oh great. He’s clingy."

Silver just shouldn’t date. Period.

Entering: our major conflict.

Logan's job is to chase down suspicious humans on V-Date because there are rumors the police are using its users to gather information...

Uh-oh… it looks like Silver is going to have some more interactions with Hotty-Drink-My-Blood. Wait… Silver isn’t working with the police, right? How are Silver and Logan going to build a relationship if she’s using V-Date the entire time spying for the popos? Talk about betrayal! Isn’t drama what Silver was trying to avoid in the first place?

And who is this Anastasia woman who thinks she has rights over Logan? Is she going to expose his little... err-“fling” with Silver and amplify this mess?

Things just went from bad to worse and what started as an innocent romance is now much much more.

"Would Anastasia have told him already? Is he suspicious that the report of my happiness with a human has coincided with my mission?"

Dating the Undead is riveting, lyrical, and totally captivating. Silver unintentionally steps into a world of trouble and Logan’s unconditional love for her keeps her alive. You know how it goes: an eye for an eye, a life for a life. Logan gives it all in order to protect Silver. Two people with their minds elsewhere end up on the same path to heartache. Juliet Lyons, spare me!

"Whatever he’s done in the past, whoever he works for, I know I’ll never have it like this with anyone else. Ever."

Sacrafice, temptation, and fate. Juliet Lyons paints us an impeccable portrait of unexpected love. Let’s not even talk about the dreamy ax man waiting to hack away at our hearts! Dating the Undead is. life.

Gaawd just gargle my blood, already! *waiting waiting* 🙄

'Dating The Undead' by Juliet Lyons is book One in the "V-Date.Com" series. This is the story of Silver and Logan.
Silver and Logan happen to meet on New Year's eve when Silver is kicked out of a bar and Logan was coming by. They talk and they 'kiss'. Logan asks for her name but he doesn't give his. Silver knows he is a Vampire and thinks the bind blowing 'kiss' was because he was a vampire.
This was a good vampire romance story.

Didn't live up to the premise. Humorous, but bordering on mean. Heroine trashes other women. Deus ex machina ending.

This is one of those tough books to review. Books that I loved? Easy to rate and review. Books that I hated? Oddly enough, those are even easier to rate and review. But books that were just OK? Those are tough to talk about because they didn’t leave a strong impression on me one way or the other. This was one of those “meh” reads that I could’ve gone on living happily without. It wasn’t the worst I’ve ever read, but it was also far, far from the best.

With that in mind, I guess I’ll start with the positives:

1. There’s an interesting premise here. A vampire dating site for fang-followers to hook up with the undead hottie of their choosing? Lots of potential there.

2. Logan is a great character. He’s Irish, funny, sexy, snarky, and ready to do whatever it takes to be with the woman he loves. In my head, he was Captain Hook (aka Killian Jones) from Once Upon a Time, which totally works for me. (I do love me some Killian Jones)

3. Pacing is smooth and there’s a great mix of emotional and action-y scenes to keep things moving along nicely.

But there were plenty of negatives that irked the bejesus out of me, too:

1. Silver, the heroine, is—I think—intended to be “spunky”. If she was in a Western romance, we’d say she was a “spitfire”. But many authors seem to mistake “spunky” for bitchy. If I had to label Silver, I’d definitely say she was a bitch. Case in point: after Logan has done nothing but help her (when he clearly could’ve killed her a hundred times over at this point), they have this little exchange:

“So, what do you want?” I ask, tucking my bag under my arm and gazing at him with narrowed eyes.
“Just to see you home safely,” he says. “It’s dangerous to walk around London on your own at night.”
I give off a little snort of derision and purse my lips, glancing up and down the quiet street. “Fine,” I say.
“Walk me home.” I lean forward in what I hope is a menacing way. “But you should know, I have pepper spray
in my purse and I’ve attended the finest self-defense classes in the greater London area.”

I think a simple “thank you” or a “no, I prefer to walk home alone” would’ve sufficed. Oh, and three or four pages after this exchange? The bitchy/”spunky” heroine is making out with Logan and encouraging him to bite her. So, I guess I’d have to add “flighty” and possible “self-destructive” to Silver’s list of attributes.

2. There’s a little subplot about the police asking Silver to spy on vampires through the dating site that is completely unnecessary. The entire thing could’ve been left out of the story.
Silver’s not even interested in the first vampire she dates through the website. She thinks he’s boring. Does that stop her from asking him to bite her? Nope. That’s about what I’d expect from a bitchy, flighty, self-destructive heroine like Silver. Just for fun, here’s another example of our heroine’s unique, um, charm:

"Get back here, vampire. I felt you up; now you feel me up. That's how it works in the twenty-first century. This isn't Jane Austen. I'm not bloody Elizabeth Bennet."

3. I’m soooooo over the “evil woman who made me a vampire is out to kill my new lady love” trope in paranormal romance. Only Teresa Medeiros has done this one right, in my opinion.

So, for me, this one was “meh” with a side of “blah”. But if you’re a big fan of the genre, it’s not the worst thing you’ll ever read. (How’s that for a glowing recommendation?)

Full disclosure: I received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 Hearts I read the synopsis of this book and was really excited about all the differences this book would have from other vampire stories but I have to say I was wrong. Not that this book is bad. It isn’t. It’s actually good but the parts I thought I would enjoy like people knowing vampires exist, vampires needing a dating site, etc just seemed to take away from the enthralling vampires I am used to.

The characters are well written and I enjoyed them I am just not sure that I thought the story flowed. And maybe I missed it but I am not sure why all of a sudden they are in a world where vampires are known about and the world doesn’t care. Well they care and want more information but it just doesn’t seem to be a big deal.

Maybe the others in the series will address this but I am not sure if I will be picking them up.

DATING THE UNDEAD was a different kind of vampire read than I'm normally used to. It had a real undertone of fun and snark in which I found engaging. I would have liked a little more building of this particular vampire world to really understand the context as the reality of vampires in the human world was a new concept for society.

Silver was the kind of heroine that needs to grow on you. Her character wasn't instantaneously likeable but she did have depth to her character and was multi - dimensional. Logan intrigued me and I loved getting under his skin step - by - step. For me, Logan was the glue in this story. The underworld of vampire - human relations was interesting.

The connection between Logan and Silver just lacked something and I can't quite put my finger on it but I held back from fully investing in these two.

I did enjoy this book, I just wanted a little more in a few ways.

A copy of this book was provided by the publisher through netgalley in return for a honest review.

Silver is the ‘it girl”, clever, pretty, mouthy and independent, an independence learned with the disappearance of her mother several years ago. When her New Year’s Eve party from hell ends with a thrown drink, a well-placed knee and a stolen Chanel jacket, she’s heading home to lick her wounds and move on when she’s suddenly face to face with a green-eyed, gorgeous Irishman. With a Twist. He’s a vampire, as instantly attracted to her fear nothing attitude as her looks and humor, as she is to the gorgeous specimen in front of her. Offering to escort her home, she’s smart enough to lead him to a false address, slinking to her own apartment later.

Patrick was a gypsy in life, a young man with healing skills, when he emigrated to London he ended up accused of murder. Imprisoned on a prison ship, he was close to death when an ancient turned him, with plans to create a gang of evil-minded, conscienceless vampires to do her bidding. Years of servitude and self-hatred, Patrick left his sire and was functioning in London, serving another ancient at his nightclub that caters to human / vampire interactions.

Many things are different in this story: the skills, talents and lore of the vampires is different, and there are few who know the secrets: something that Scotland Yard is desperate to discover. Because of Silver’s history, she has been recruited to the cause, set up with an identity and account on the newly popularized V-Date, and asked to share any information she learns. On the other hand, Patrick has been tasked by his new Ancient, Ronin, to find and glamor this new human on the V-Date site, with the intentions of her avoiding all vampires and the site itself. Of course, Silver’s is the first name Patrick is given - and he just can’t bring himself to do it.

For a debut offering, the story is clever, moves along reasonably consistently, although the inset from Scotland Yard played more of a part closer to the end, and served to wrap up some questions in Silver’s past neatly, while challenging her own conscience in her dealings with Patrick. And their connection is electric, with an easy humor that adds to the steam. Patrick is, at heart, a good man – desperate to be worthy of Silver’s love, now that he has finally found the one. With plenty of secondary characters that add to the mix in varying ways, a tension-filled climax and a wonderful epilogue, this is a fun start to a new series, making London a clear author to watch.

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

What a hawt and naughty good time!

Silver Harris is snarky and sassy. The girl likes having the last word--even if that final statement is a slammed door. She doesn’t put up with kisses on the side. She doesn’t care for superior tones. That Chanel coat she is wearing is compensation for a ruined New Year’s celebration; not saying she is a klepto but Silver believes in reparations. The true rewards of the last night of the year is the satisfactory knee to the jewels to her cheating date and a surprise walk home with a very sexy vampire.

And vampires are as seductive as all the tabloids report.

Logan Byrne has surely rescued Silver from a shamefaced return to lame festivities after an Academy winning exit. The chit has moxie; truly charmed, Logan is delighted with her antics. The unexpectedly sweet offer of her neck in thanks for his assistance is something he can’t pass up. And the minx tastes intoxicating.

Just his luck. Logan’s employer sends him back her way days later--not to reunite them though. Logan is to glamour Silver from any interest in bloodsuckers. In following out instructions Logan’s task will turn her against the likes of him. This vampire can’t give up the woman who makes his still heart pitter-patter even if it means losing his afterlife.

It took a few pages for me to get into this book because at first it was a touch goofy. Fortunately the characters pulled me through that sketchy start; this book is fantastic!

Imagine Buffy The Vampire Slayer, mix it with the TV show Lucifer then dust it liberally with the saltiness of True Blood. Dating the Undead is the oishi taste of that dish!

This vampy ride travels a rogue path. Forget your garlic, crucifixes, wooden stakes, and silver nitrate. These aren’t your grandma’s vampires, and they don’t hide in coffins. Out of the closet blood drinkers are socialite celebrities seducing willing wantons. When a V-Dating website facilitates hook-up services for gullible humans with perfect predators Scotland Yard sees the perfect opportunity to infiltrate the vampire community in search of the evil that dead men do. It’s a chance to deconstruct immortal psychology and solve murders committed through the centuries.

And if you still need a reason to pick up Dating The Undead I assure you that Vera--formerly known by the stage name Etta Marlow who played Susie De Sousa in Girl Uptown with Gregor Lane; Vera, who won an Oscar for Days Like These with Vic Stevens back in the day; Vera who reduces suave, sexy, worldly Logan Byrne to a fluttering-lashes fanboy--will have you laughing aloud. With nothing new under the sun for the jaded nonagenarian her wicked insights are hysterical. Silver and Vera will steal your heart if you give them a moment’s blind eye.

Pick up Dating the Undead!
I can’t wait for Inspector Vincent Ferrer’s love story Romancing the Undead, I await it with bated breath. Or if I am honest, I’m panting for it. Thank you Ms. Juliet Lyons for this sweet and spicy pairing.

Who knew that the New Year’s Eve from Hell would broaden Silver’s dating horizons beyond the norm and into the world of V-Date, the online dating service that pairs humans and vampires? Leave it to London to be on the cutting edge of romance and leave it to Silver to fall for a vampire with more kindness and humanity in his left fang than the humans she has known.

Like the Princess who had to kiss a few frogs before finding her Prince, Silver is determined to find the vampire of her dating dreams. Unlike the princess, Silver isn’t the epitome of grace and gentility, but she is a laugh a minute, as the cyclone that is her brain takes us on a journey into her mind, heart and attitude.

Logan’s kiss is magical, his charm and kindness is swoon-worthy and once you try vampire, you can’t go back, right? Then again, Silver isn’t one to do things by half and soon she is in over her head and in a race for her life, her heart and her blood with Logan by her side, as they are hunted by demons intent on making Logan pay for his past.

…And to think, it all started with Silver’s temper, an alcoholic shower, a swift kick to the family jewels and a chance meeting with a vampire…talk about ringing in the New Year with a bang! Who knew she may have found the love of her life?

DATING THE UNDEAD by Juliet Lyons had me laughing out loud with the antics of Silver! I had times when I wondered if she had a death wish she didn’t know about! She is brash, gutsy and pretty much clueless to the real dangers of playing with sharp objects. She would have surely perished without Logan lurking in the background. Humor, angst, attitude, romance and heat, it’s all in here!

Dating The Undead is a quirky British paranormal rom-com. Silver Harris is young, funky and fun. Logan Byrne is an old hunky and sexy as hell vampire with a delicious Irish accent. The book starts with a meet cute and then the pacing gets a bit wobbly. I loved the twist at the end. If you grunt it through the slow bits this is a fun read.

I had not read a book like this for a long time. Vampires aren’t the creatures we see the most in literature these days and I have not read any books with them for a long time. Yet, as soon as this series was announced, I was curious to discover the story, a light novel and vampires? I say yes! Then I have to say that the cover was really appealing as well.

We discover Silver a young woman who crosses the road of Logan a vampire. But something happens without them having the chance to meet again even if they think constantly of the other. Yet fate will bring them together when Silver decides to participate in the new dating website with vampires. And yet it is also what will change her life, between her reunion with Logan or the government who is interested in the information that she could uncover, Silver will have enough to do! But Logan also has a few problems and will have to face them very quickly.

It was nice to discover these two characters and to witness the beginning of their romance. We also learn a little more about the author’s ideas about vampires and I admit that it’s always something interesting. I spent a good time with the story, it’s light as I said and although it does not revolutionize the genre, it’s nice. I will read the sequel with pleasure.
