I won't be reviewing each of the short stories separately but I will say that The Call & The Haunted were by far the best out of the quartet. I just can't decided which one I like better. The overall stories in those were better but I did like seeing from Andi's POV (The Sentinels) the best. These ragtag group of characters reminded me of Scooby Doo and the Gang. It was mostly The Call & The Haunted that gave off that vibe; but the way they always would call each other to come help solve a mystery was another thing that connected them to Scooby Doo. I was disappointed that the book didn't end with the final story; I want closure from the story. I was dissatisfied with story arc of each of the short stories. There was a problem, then some kind of solution but no definite ending. The 'bad guys' each seem to be get dealt with but it all happens so fast. The most characters don't grow or change their beliefs at all. Plus they always seem to bumble from one trouble into another. There is some Godly talks but we don't delve deep into them, we don't see the characters grow in faith or with faith (except for Tank). Honestly, I would have just liked to see their story come to close so that I could have moved on. |
4 stories make up this book, which is a pleasant read. Each author's story is a very good read, but i really enjoyed Frank Peretti's "The House". I do look forward to part 2 of this series. Thanks to NetGally, the authors and the publisher for allowing me to read the advanced copy of this book in return for my honest review. |
For readers interested in Christian Fiction but are not sold on it, a book like this profiling some of the best suspense authors is a great first step. |
Harbinger: (noun). A person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another; a forerunner of something. A crazy school in Southern California with a well that reaches to the spiritual world; a house that haunts instead of being haunted; birds and other animals dying with their eyes missing; a young deserted girl who can appear and disappear at will. These are the harbingers in cycle one of the Harbingers Series of novels by Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt and Alton Gansky. Think of it like a Christian version of the Twilight Zone and each author takes their turn at one of four characters from their perspective and spins their own unique spin on this unusual pairing of people in episode after episode. Bill Myers tells the story from Brenda's perspective, a street hustling tattoo artist who sees images of the future. Frank Peretti writes as the professor, the atheist ex-priest ruled by logic, Angela Hunt writes as Andi, the professor's brilliant but geeky assistant who sees inexplicable patterns and Alton Gansky writes as Tank, the naive, big-hearted jock with a surprising connection to a healing power. The Call from Bill Myers sets the stage, followed by Frank Peretti's The Haunted, Angela Hunt's The Sentinels and Alton Gansky's The Girl. These are all coupled in one book known as the Invitation even though you could pick these up one at a time, I was completely glued to each of them. Each novella offers a bit of the unusual supernatural as only these masters of Christian speculative fiction can weave. These team of rag-tag individuals have been pulled together for some reason yet unknown. Is it a calling on their lives from God or something more sinister and dark. I've been a huge literary fan of each of these authors in their own right and love the collaboration to put something together that I would LOVE to see on a television series. Nothing is ever solved but in each, the characters are tasked to perform each of their unique gifts along with a young boy named Daniel they meet in The Haunted. I don't want to give too much away, but if you love the creepy, suspenseful, dark and supernatural, you will WANT to pick this one up. Readers even get a sneak peek at The Revealing, the 5th installment in the series. I received Invitation by Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt and Alton Gansky compliments of Bethany House Publishers and Net Galley. This collection is due out in April of 2017 and trust me, you WILL want them all. For me, this was an easy 5 out of 5 stars and held me on the edge of my seat by these talented and gifted authors. Now I am off to find the rest of the series! |
For those who like a bit of horror in their lives to get that adrenaline rush but aren’t comfortable with Stephen King levels then you should like what these authors bring to the table. It’s as if the horror genre and Christian fiction were thrown into a blender then poured out to create this story. Four characters, four points of view, four authors, all come together to create one thrilling ride. Each author voices one of the main characters so you get a truly distinct style of character development. Considering the experience these authors bring to the table it was not surprising to find stories with an interesting and well-thought out plot line, descriptive scenes, realistic dialogue, and an attention grabbing story arch. Despite the fact you have four people writing what is essentially one story they were able to keep the continuity in place so you didn’t get pulled out of the story by some errant detail gone awry. I’ve been a longtime fan of Frank Peretti, Bill Myers and Alton Gansky so it was a real treat to find something new they’ve written. To discover this was created together was like the Christmas gift you asked for but never thought you’d actually get. Not having a previous familiarity with Angela Hunt’s writing style I wasn’t sure what to expect but considering the company she’s in knew she had to be good and she did not disappoint. If you are a fan of Christian fiction then you will NOT want to miss this collaboration of talent and experience! |
Horror meets christian fiction. There's more between heaven and earth than we can see - but the characters in these four novellas can see and expierence scary things out of the supernatural world. Four different characters, four different POVs, four different authors make one excellent creepy creepy series that I need to follow further. I had read only Peretti's books but now I need to read some of the others' because I love suspense with depth. |
