I am not quite sure what Should think about this story so far. I liked what I read, that is definitely not the problem. I just don't know, if I liked it enough to continue on with the story. I think I will give this book chance at some point, but not immediately. |
I fell in love with Alexander Hamilton at 18 years old when I studied him in my freshman American Political History class. His story, from his beginnings in the Caribbean to his death at the hands of Aaron Burr, fascinated me. BUT, what we didn't cover in my college class was his relationship with Eliza. My fascination with Elizabeth Schuyler and her sisters came from Lin Manuel-Miranda and Hamilton: The Musical. This sneak peek of Alex and Eliza: A Love Story, only made me more interested and excited to learn more about this dynamic relationship and the tumultuous love story of one of America's founding fathers. Well done! |
Thank you to Netgalley, Penguin Young Readers Group, and Melissa de la Cruz for the chance to read and review this ARC Sneak Peek; I was really hoping to love this sneak peek a lot more than I ended up liking it. I felt like it was strangely pushed and put together, and that Eliza's character could use a little more research and settling. It was hard to tell if this book was based more in actual research to the time, or more on the coattails of Hamilton which is so big across the nation right now. I felt like Eliza was very one way and then another (especially if we look at her choosing demure clothes and then jumping into dressing up, even before saying no two pages later). I truly felt from the beginning that the voices of the two sisters who weren't Eliza blended and blurred too much. They were constantly compared against Eliza more like they were the same person in two bodies rather than two different sisters of a threesome (which anyone with multiple sisters knows that even if you have two who act alike, even twins, there are going to be really big differences in what they do and who they are, too). This all together from the beginning made it hard for me to do more the skim the sneak peek, and I won't likely be picking up the book. |
I had a very hard time getting through this sample, and I usually love De la Cruz's work. I'm also a fan of historical fiction. But for some reason this was very slow for me, and hard to get through. I didn't enjoy it and it felt like a chore to read. I'm quite surprised. |
I need to get a copy of this for sure. The sneak peak had me wanting more. LOVE Eliza so far. Smart, witty, kind and wanting to be of service to her community. The writing is eloquent and kept me wanting more. Looking forward The reading the book in it's entirety. Thank you! |
A sneak peek of this bookwas definitely no enough! I was finished with it fairly quickly and I can't wait to read the rest of it. |
This is a historical fiction novel about Elizabeth Schuyler and Alexander Hamilton, and how they came to be married. The Netgalley sample I received was only for 4 chapters, but I finished it on audiobook, so here are my thoughts: In the early chapters, I realized that the author stated that they had maids or servants, and ignored the presence of slavery in the time period. I looked further into it, and the Schuyler's definitely had slaves. This felt very inauthentic, and though it was not the point of the novel, it glazed over a very real part of the United States History. The author said she made it historically accurate to a point, and it definitely felt like that. I really appreciated how the characters talked, and how it sounded like they belonged to a previous time period. Also, it was really cool that the author based the story on real people in US history. t was a cute, fluffy novel imagining Alex and Eliza's courtship and the challenges they must have faced due to their differences in status. I enjoyed how Eliza is portrayed passionate about the Revolution and helping the troops of the colonies, and I also enjoyed the portrayal of Peggy and Angelica, though I wish they had been more present in the novel. Perhaps they will be in the sequel? I gave this 3/5 stars. |
I have yet to read a Melissa de la Cruz book that I wasn't happy with. This teaser made me rush out to buy the book. Absolutely love, love, loved it. |
I didn't get far since I'm not a huge fan of sneak peeks tbh because once I start a book and the story is intriguing enough, I want to keep going. So it's not like it was bad it was really good and can't wait to read the rest of it one day! :D with so many books out there and ones I'm reading at the moment I don't want to risk getting jumped into a new book and then wanting more! (plus my limit of books to read at the same time is 3-5 books and I already have 5 going. so one day I'll read this! I haven't seen Hamilton but have heard the soundtrack and think for a YA version of these two is a great idea! :D |

I cannot review the whole book as I did not have a complete copy to review.. The sample was not bad and I would enjoy reading the entire book. |
This sneak peek gives a look into the setting and characters of the novel. I enjoyed the writing style of this and how it captured the atmosphere of the people in the Schuyler Mansion getting ready for the grand ball as well as seeing Eliza as a stronger character with more of a voice than in the musical. I am very intrigued as to how this story continues and to see how it differs from the musical by Lin Manuel Miranda. A full review will come later if I get a hold of this book later this year. |
Great sneak peek! As someone who's a huge fan of Hamilton, I will literally pick up anything that has to do with it. I will definitely be purchasing the finished copy of this and I cannot wait to dive back into this world. |
A great sampler! I already loved hearing about these characters and can't wait to read the finished book. |

An interesting peak at this book, I am looking forward to reading the whole book to see what happens with the characters. The author is extremely vivid in her descriptions, so much so that you can imagine yourself as part of the scenery, watching from the sidelines! |

Historical Fiction is not my thing, but I could see this being a great way to get readers to try something new. Because this book is about such a popular character in pop culture, it's likely to hook readers who otherwise are likely to steer clear of historical fiction, like me. |
Obsessed with the amazing Broadway musical Hamilton, this is completely for you! Just this little sneak peak made me want to read the entire book a chapter in. I will admit I did have to read this preview later than I would have liked because of my busy schedule. However this arc did it's job. I was captivated by this preview right away. Now that the full book is available I will be picking it up and giving an in depth review of the novel on my Goodreads page very soon! |
Good but not great, even when taking into consideration that it's both historical romance and YA. The characters felt a bit flat to me. |
Wow! Reading this preview has left me extremely intrigued about what happens next! A historical fiction gem! |
