A fitting tribute to a transcendent artist. Covering all aspects of Prince’s career, it’s a deeply dive into all things purple.

I am a fan of Prince and was really upset with his death, then i saw this book and decided to give it a go. I noticed is written in the 1st person in the point of view from the author but didnt captivated me, sorry.

Great in-depth book. It is very musically centered, a lot of details about the songs and albums and history. Not a lot of biographical detail.

There is interesting insight here and there is no doubt Ben Greenman is knowlegeable and passionate about Prince's music. However there are personal elements and episodes which are recounted (such as the meeting with John Paul Gaultier) and are awkwardly represented. On the whole the book is worthwhile for the song analysis but this is really only about the first third of the book. If this had been supplemented by interviews with collaborators or band members the book would then have been something special.

Thanks to Netgalley and Faber & Faber for a review copy.

A friend in the publishing industry sent me an advanced copy of this book in digital format. I have been skeptical of anything written since last April but the author is known for his appreciation of all things PRN and he worked with Questlove (who contributed the foreword to this book) on his memoir. It is a truthful, balanced, appreciative look at Prince's career and you can tell how important he was to the writer. Mr. Greenman should be an honorary member of The Purple Circle. The release date is April 11th but it's available for pre-order. I will be purchasing a hard copy! Highly recommended.
