Nancy Thayer is one of my favorite authors, I look forward to her books each summer. This book did not disappoint. It takes place on Nantucket at the beginning of the summer. All the summer residents are starting to come to the island. The houses around Darcy, who lives there year round, start to fill up. A woman, her husband and their 3 sons in one house an 89 year old women and her adult grandson in another and her ex-husband and his family in the house behind her. It is a story of intergenerational friendships in which deep friendships are built. There are many secrets which Darcy seems to be in the middle of. As a school librarian I loved how the book was about libraries, as Darcy is the children's librarian in Nantucket. A librarian is a dream job, and this book confirms it.

I received this ARC from net galley in exchange for an honest review.

Summer is here, grab your towel and head to the beach! Nancy Thayer does it again –plops us right into summertime on Nantucket with Darcy, a year-round resident of Nantucket who is content living in the only place that has ever truly felt like home to her.
Darcy has established a fairly predictable and comfortable life there; she spends her days working as a librarian, has been dating a good looking guy for several months, and has a group of friends she hangs around with on the weekends. The summer vacation crowd that comes to the island turns that upside down – especially when her ex-husband his new wife move in next door. Darcy loves spending time in the backyard garden her grandmother spent hours tending to and growing, which leads to Darcy overhearing some of the conversations of the new neighborhood residents. She struggles with knowing when she should interfere and when she should stay out of people’s business…and does a little of both.
I like that Darcy does not hide from confronting the people from her past, and that she does not prevent them from allowing her to forge a meaningful relationship with Willow, who really needs her friendship and guidance. I also like that she learns to let go of the past and find her way to the life she really wants.
This book brings together just the right amount of romance, some scandal, and fun characters to make it a perfect summer beach read!

The absolute summer reading book! I have always admired the books of Nancy Thayer and I think this one is the best. It gives a thorough view of Southern Charm, hospitality, and community. It has romance, humor, and values friendships, old and new. A must read for summer.

Secrets in Summer is the perfect beach read! It's warm, inviting, and extremely charming (just like it's characters). The setting is perfect; it takes place in the beautiful Nantucket, and the way the author describes it makes you feel like you are there. I could practically feel the sand between my toes and smell the ocean air while reading this one! Readers, if you are looking for a book to pack in your beach bag, or one to take on vacation with you then I would highly recommend this novel. It's really a wonderful read.

Darcy, a year-round Nantucket resident, is content with her life -- her almost-dream job as children's librarian, her new relationship with a local carpenter, and the home she inherited from her grandmother. This summer, though, she finds herself getting uncharacteristically involved in the lives of some of the "summer people" in her neighborhood. As summer comes to a close, Darcy faces decisions that could change her life forever.

I have enjoyed Ms. Thayer's books in the past and have generally devoured them in just a day or two. As a result, I was surprised that it took well over a week for me to finish this book. Granted, I put this one aside several times to focus on other books that needed to go back to the library, but when I did, I wasn't in a big hurry to pick it up again.

I suspect a large part of that was due to the main character, Darcy. In one part of the book, we're told she's happy with her life, she enjoys living on her own, being able to set her own schedule, etc., but many times throughout the book, she thinks "I wish I had someone to comfort me." Yes, I understand that the two ideas aren't mutually exclusive, but she seemed to be longing for a partner much more often than someone would who is happy with her life. She also seemed to form attachments really easy, which even I know is only going to lead to disappointment when the summer people return to their homes in the fall.

Several other plot lines seem to have been dropped during the course of the book. I kept waiting for more in these areas, but they were wrapped up in a sentence or two near the very end of the book. Quite disappointing! Despite this, however, I will look for the author's next book, and hope that it will be more engaging than this book was.

I will post this review on Goodreads on/around May 16, when the book is released. Thank you for the opportunity to read this book by one of my favorite authors.

This book was a great, fast read. It reminded me of some of the best British authors I've read. I loved all the connections between the characters, and ultimately how Darcy and Nash found their happily ever after.

I really wanted to love this book. It's the beginning of summer on beautiful Nantucket Island and all of the summer renters are starting to arrive.
Darcy is a full time resident of the Island and she usually doesn't get involved in the lives of the summer renters, but her ex-husband and his new family happen to rent the house behind hers for the summer.
This story dragged on for me and I really didn't feel invested in the main character Darcy. She describes her days in detail and you don't really get a feel for who she really is. This book had all the makings of a great beach read but I never really connected with it.

I enjoy reading Nancy Thayer books. She has a good story in this book that will be a perfect summer read. Set in Nantucket she captures the culture of a tourist center from the year round resident point of view. Having lived for many years in this setting I could identify with Darcy and her friends. Darcy is a librarian in this small community that swells to a big town in summer. She and Nash are dating and when the summer renter arrive they become immersed in their drama and lives. Well written and interesting folks this is an enjoyable read for all ages. I liked the friendship that developed between Darcy, Mimi and Willow.

I would like to thank Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine Books, Nancy Thayer, and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for a unbiased review. This is a wonderful book about women who meet and become close over a summer spent in Nantucket. The book has lovely descriptions, a well-developed plot and characters that are easy to relate to. It made me long for long-ago summers spent at the beach in RI. I laughed at the influx of summer people, I cried at the sorrow of seeing the people leave in the fall knowing that one might not see them again. The book will tug at your heart-strings and provide you with a lovely read.

There are so many intricacies in this book. Relationships are messy and real and they leave one with all sorts of feelings. There is romance, betrayal, infidelity, love, dislike, anger, you name it! Ms. Thayer is able to weave all those together in a memorable book. This book definitely made me want to read her other books! If you are lucky enough to read this book while at the beach, grab a towel, wiggle your feet in the sand, and keep your eyes open, because some of these characters will come to life around you!

I received a ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Although I am a big fan of books set in Nantucket, and Thayer did describe summer in Nantucket from a year rounder's point of view, I had a lot of issues with the execution of this book. The main character, children's librarian, Darcy finds herself very involved in all of the dramas of her summer neighbors but the different story lines seemed forced and there was a lot of repetition. The author also told a lot of the facts in a very stilted style that lacked description and sometimes read as a daily journal, rather than let the story unfold through descriptions and well developed dialog. Fans of Thayer's who are looking for a light summer beach read will most likely enjoy this book.

Darcy is a very likable character that you can see yourself in. She is every woman at some point in life. I especially enjoyed the relationship between Darcy, Mimi, Willow and Susan. I think this will make a wonderful summer beach read!

Terrific beach read! Thayer does a great job of creating compelling and believable characters in a wonderful setting - Nantucket Island. The neighbors are interesting - providing several whom I really enjoyed, and a couple (Boyz and Clive...) that were not so nice but made for an intriguing story. Definite must read for fans of Robyn Carr, Luann Rice and Debbie Macomber.

Nancy Thayer is the Queen of the Nantucket Beach Read. This is the fifth of Thayer's books I have read and I enjoyed it very much. She is very skilled at creating a main character that is not only well developed, but that the reader wants to befriend. "Secrets in Summer" is a book about friendship and about love. It is about making peace with the past and letting it go, so you can lead a healthy present and work toward your dreams for the future. It was both a quick and an enjoyable read, and I would recommend this book to others.

Always enjoys books by Nancy Thayer. This once was no exception - meets the requirement for a great summer beach read.

I loved this latest from Nancy Thayer. It’s a summer of living in the center of three families that all intersect for Darcy Cotterill. Her ex-husband and family live behind her, a young family lives on one side and an aging woman and her virile grandson live on the other side. Darcy hears and sees things she’d rather not and feels forced to intervene where she honestly does not want to be involved. Through it all, Darcy learns so much about herself and what she really wants. The characters are interesting and thoughtful. It is a very enjoyable read.

I liked it once I got into it, but felt like it was very repetitive at the beginning. The story was engaging, and I liked that she demonstrated how bonds can be formed even in unconventional family situations. I thought Boyz was a bit over the top, and his overbearing character got a little tiresome. Overall I think it's a nice addition to Nancy Thayer's Nantucket stories.

This read like a list in a diary, Monday I did this, Tuesday this happened and so on. Pretty shallow, and while I think she was trying to add details to draw in the reader it it just came across as useless information.

This is a summer, sitting in a beach chair book. When you really don't want to think and just need a meaningless type beach book. I did not find this to hold much depth or character development to be there.
