I wanted to like this book. I really did. I have loved all of Nancy Thayer's book. They are the perfect beach read and always make me want to go to Nantucket. Sadly, this book was just ok.

Darcy is a librarian who is surrounded by summer neighbors. Throughout the book Darcy learns more about each of her neighbors and the secrets they keep. One of these neighbors just happens to be her ex husband Boyz and his new family. Darcy struggles to find a balance of minding her own business and becoming friends with Susan, Mimi, and Willow. She also struggles with her own relationship problems with Nash, her unofficial boyfriend.

The main problem I had with this book is there seemed to be too much forced drama. Between her ex husband living behind her, affairs, drugs, and relationship problems, it was too much. Darcy was also a hard character to connect with. I loved how she wasn't a typical main character but she was very indecisive and would not speak up for herself. I found myself rolling my eyes or saying "oh come on!" a few times throughout the book.

Overall I'd rate the book 3 stars. I loved the setting and it is a great book to get you in the mood for warm weather and the beach!

I received this book from NetGalley free of charge in exchange for my honest review of the book.

I've read several other books by Nancy Thayer and have enjoyed them. This one was no exception.

A fun, easy to read book that drew you in from the first page. Darcy, is a sweet woman, who despite her best intentions to not get involved with the summer people, is drawn to her elderly neighbor, a young mom with three rambunctious boys and her ex-husband's 14 year old step daughter. She has an undefined relationship with Nash, a carpenter, who has his own secrets.

As always, the secrets work themselves out and everyone's lives move on after summer is over. All with happy endings.

I did kind of keep waiting to see if Logan would turn up again later in the book. I think it would have gave the book a little extra twist..

I was torn between 3 and 4 stars since the book is really a good beach or vacation read, but lacking some depth. Thayer's setting is always beautiful Nantucket, the main character is a children's librarian with a complicated love life, so why didn't I love it? I felt Darcy was not a strong woman, but dependent on her relationships with her ex, her new love interest Nash, and neighbor for the summer, Clive. I do recommend as a light read.

4.5 stars
Nancy Thayer's books =summer to me. How lucky was I to receive an ARC (from netgalley) to read in the middle of the winter? Darcy is a year round resident of Nantucket and is happy with her life as a librarian and the man in her life, Nash and her relationships with her summer neighbors. Much to her dismay, one of her neighbors happens to be her ex-husband and his wife- the woman he left Darcy for- and their teenage daughter. A story of friendships and relationships and totally enjoyable read. Highly recommend for Nancy Thayer fans.

A decent beach read. I think anyone who enjoys Cape Cod or Nantucket themed stories will enjoy this fast reading book. Darcy, the pretty, young librarian stars in this novel surrounded by "summer people". Many lives twist and turn, some of the characters don't fully develop. Lots of gossip - dive in and enjoy!

Darcy has inherited her Grandmothers house in Nantucket, a quiet town except when the summer people show up and the population swells. Darcy tries not to get too involved with the summer people but this doesn't work out too well for her this year. Her ex, Boyz, has moved in behind her and she can see into his yard. Before she knows I she is involved with his step daughter. Boyz is convinced she wants him back, even tho Darcy has a boyfriend.

This is a great beach read. There are a lot of interesting characters that all interacted with each other, but Darcy is the main focus of the story. You feel like you are experiencing a small town summer at the beach through the authors words. I wish Darcy had stood up for herself more and not allowed herself to be pushed around by the men in her life. She came across as very needy. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

Secrets of summer
By Nancy Thayer

This beachy read begins with Darcy Cotterill a children's librarian, and permanent resident of Nantucket.

Summer vacationers invade her tranquil neighborhood. She surprisingly finds her ex husband and his wife and her teenaged daughter willow living next door, a elderly woman and her grandson down the street, and a young mother and her rambunctious boys completeing the mix of vacationers.

She is faced with making decisions about a new love, adulterous neighbors, and troubled wayward teenagers.

This was my first Nancy Thayer read. It made me long for sand, sun and surf...and of course romance. Great from the beginning to the very end !
4 stars.

I received this ARC through Netgalley and its publisher for a honest review.

Finally putting your past behind you, and letting your future unfold. Darby's childhood wasn't the best but she knew she was loved. After her divorce from a man she really didn't love and married too quickly, and too young, she moved to Nantucket. Taking ownership of the house her grandmother had left her and securing a job at the library she was finally set. How lucky can one get! At thirty years old, Darcy was starting to live the life she wanted, putting her Master's degree in library science to good use. She made friends, dated a few men, and made a few renovations to her new home. Now what? Summer people came by the drives, including her ex husband and family in the rental next door. Complications ensue. On the other side, an elderly woman and her handsome grandson. It gets interesting.
I'd say 3.5 sunny beach stars for good story!

Secrets in Summer is one of my favorite Nancy Thayer books. It was a perfect beach/escape read. I needed a book for a two day trip (to the Cape coincidentally) and knew this would be the perfect choice. Darcy has a little more sass than the typical Thayer character (which I was a big fan of), but she is still a good girl at heart. I can usually guess how a Nancy Thayer book will end, but I have to say that this one surprised me! The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because I wish Darcy stood up to the men in her life a little more strongly, but that's just a personal preference. Recommended for people looking for a great romantic beach read that may not end up the way you expect!

Everytime I read a book by Nancy Thayer I want to jump on the ferry and go to Nantucket! In her latest book, islander Darcy prepares for another summer of temporary neighbors. To her dismay, the first neighbor to show up is her cheating ex husband, his wife and her daughter. Then she meets her elderly neighbor and her charming grandson. Finally, a harried mother, her husband and three rambunctious sons arrive. Darcy finds herself getting involved with all of the new residents, even her ex's family.
I enjoyed the way the relationships unfolded in the book. All four households become involved with each other-not always in a good way. Darcy also has to decide where her heart lies when she has interest from one of the new residents along with her ongoing relationship with a local carpenter. What starts out as a disaster with her ex as a neighbor becomes a chance for Darcy to get closure with that part of her life.
As always, the stories of island life make the reader long to be part of it all. Another excellent book from a favorite author!

This was an unusual book. You got to know a cast of characters from the Nantucket island. Darcy had lived with her grandmother, Penny, on the island, and at Penny's passing, she was left her grandmother's home on Nantucket. She had always wanted to be a librarian and Penny had been the only person in her life to show her love and that she mattered.

Nash had lived through a family tragedy and was forever scarred and he had given up practicing law and joined a construction crew on Nantucket. He met Darcy and they began to see each other.

This story is a progression, of sorts, through Darcy and Nash's life on the island and the people who breezed through their lives and how they began to care for one another and to heal their broken souls.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I wanted this to be a "perfect summer book" & it just wasn't for me. Darcy whines, repeats & some of the situations were just so unbelievable, as well as disjointed. Darcy complains about the summer people, yet jumps right in & befriends them. Her neighbors are jerks (including her ex-husband) & creepy. Her boyfriend needed to be dumped, not led around, a convenient lay when she felt like it. Sorry, hopefully the next book will be better~

Nancy Thayer has written a captivating and lovely book which is a perfect beach read. Set on Nantucket, it is the story of Darcy finding the ability to be happy on her magical island. After a lonely childhood and a disastrous first marriage, Darcy moves to the home she inherited from her beloved grandmother.

She becomes entangled with the summer residents, including her ex-husband's stepdaughter. Darcy also realizes how much she loves her casual boyfriend, Nash.

A simply lovely book, with a very satisfying ending. I highly recommend it for an enjoyable experience in reading.

I love reading books about Nantucket; it's my desire to live there one day. Nancy Thayer's new book, Secrets in Summer, is highly engaging. The main character, Darcy, a librarian, who lives year round in Nantucket, is romantically involved with Nash, a carpenter. Now add summer people, her ex-husband and his family, and an older woman and her handsome grandson and suddenly Darcy is entangled in several different relationships. A great new summer read!

Secrets in Summer

Thank you for NetGalley.com and the publisher for an ARC copy of this novel in exchange for my fair and honest review.

For someone who talks again and again about not becoming involved with “summer people” on Nantucket, Darcy seems to let them in with extreme pleasure and ease. From the sickly neighbor to the downtrodden, possibly abused wife, to the ex-hubby and his new family, Darcy sure seems to make a mess of her life in just 2 months. And then magically, once all the summer people are gone, life goes back to normal and everything seems to happen in months in the last 20% of the book.

What I Liked: I like summer stories about Nantucket, but this one was boring. Could Darcy have whined any more about her life? Think about it sweetheart. You are a single woman living on an island with 15,999 other people year-round who are mostly families. Of course its going to be difficult to find someone but are you really going to whine about it to your cat all of the time? Nothing really went on in Darcy’s life – it was everyone who had entered it. The secrets were only about one of the summer families and not really any business of Darcy’s to begin with.

What I Didn’t Like: Quite a few things, unfortunately. From “Perfect Darcy” which was setting an unrealistic expectation for a woman, to the entire creepy situation with Clive for starters. But I think what bothered me most about this novel was how all of her true friends, the year-round friends, seemed to be abandoned by Darcy for her summer neighbors. The entire last quarter of the book is Darcy complaining that she didn’t see this person or that person. What was the point of bringing up all these local characters at the end of the story? They had no purpose being there.

What I learned: Nantucket is becoming so 2015 (or earlier). Time to find a new summer destination.

Overall Grade: C

I'm a huge Nancy Thayer fan so maybe it isn't fair for me to review the book lol. I liked the characters with the exception of Darcy's ex husband, who was so full of himself it was hard to even read his part. I loved that this book centered around Darcy being a librarian and the descriptions of her library. I have worked in our local library so I know the draw the character felt. This book was really enjoyable. You won't be disappointed in this book.

This is my first experience with Nancy Thayer and I noticed that she has a talent for developing several characters and is extraordinary at describing the beautiful scenery of Nantucket. I felt that she transported me straight to summer on the island. There are quite a few relationships/friendships to keep track of in this novel, but I was very drawn to the lead character, Darcy, as she is close to my age and also has a deep love for books. The book takes you through a summer on Nantucket with Darcy, a resident of the island, and many of her neighbors who are just renting houses for the summer. You meet many charming and some not-so-charming characters along the way. I kept flipping pages to see how the summer would end for Darcy and her new friends. That being said, I did like this one quite a bit for what it is - a beach or summer read. It was an engaging and charming book and is perfect if you're looking for a light read.

Thanks to Ballantine Books and NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I received this novel from Netgalley in return of an honest review. This was the second Nantucket themed novel in a row I received from Netgalley and I personally enjoyed this one better because of the charm it brought to the town. True to the title, the novel included many "secrets" that involved many generations of people. I really liked the dynamics of the book and think it would make a great beach read!

Lovely Children's Librarian Darcy is having hot sex with a local handyman who hasn't defined their relationship, when she learns her ex, the smarmy Boyz, is renting the Nantucket mansion behind hers. Plus, another handsome neighbor and his charming grandmother are renting the mansion next door. Poor beautiful Darcy gets sucked into various melodramas of the summer set included love squares, heroin use, and affairs, among others, and ends up with a HEA you can see coming from miles away. Not my cup of tea, as the storytelling style left me feeling cold, especially regarding the various relationships, and as a main character Darcy is annoyingly perfect. So perfect she even calls it out herself in the text.

A fun and entertaining "beach read" set in Nantucket. She adeptly shows the differences between the year round visitors and the summer tourists. There are some poignant moments and a happy ending.
