It was interesting to read as a story and not in typical play dialogue. However, for a children's book, I wish the illustrations had been more featured; the book felt very text heavy. |
My 7 year old was introduced to Shakespeare's Hamlet and King Lear earlier this year in school so she lept at the chance to read a child friendly Romeo and Juliet. She read this in one sitting and really enjoyed it. Easily digestable for younger readers and she is now looking at photos of fair Verona where she visitied as an infant. Would definitely recommend. |
Pretty standard Coles-Notes version of the play. The artwork is mixed in and its a direct telling of the story. Helpful for those intimidated by the play and its dialogues. |
I read this with my son, aged 7. I enjoy a bit of William Shakespeare every now and again, and everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet. This manages to break down what can be quite a complex story, into something palatable to a younger audience. It's broken up with pictures to accompany the text (something my son appreciated) and manages to engage the reader with words appropriately to the target audience. I would certainly look out for more titles in this series, as it's a great introduction to Shakespeare to my children. |
This is a fun take on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet fit for children. If you're looking to begin introducing the younger ages to his brilliant plays, this is a great way to go about it. |
I read this book to my granddaughters and they enjoyed it. It is the very basics of the tragedy we all know. I think this is an excellent was to introduce young readers to Shakespeare's work in a way that they can understand. At the same time I think this could make a young reader seek out the original works at a later date. |
I don't undertand the concept for this book. Why should anyone read a summary of Romeo and Juliet? The wonder of this play lies in Shakespeares words, so who needs this? Sorry. |

I'm not exactly sure who the audience of this adaptation is. It says it is for children, yet it features long blocks of text and is written in language that is just elevated enough to be confusing to kids. The drawings are uninspired, and I don't know why children would be reading Macbeth or Romeo & Juliet. Just no. |
I'd be really sheltered if I'd never heard the story of Romeo and Juliet before, but believe it or not, I've never read the play or even seen the Leo diCaprio movie! This was the first time I've actually got a feel for the actual events of the story, and honestly it doesn't inspire me to either read the original or finally watch a young Leonardo climb up a trellis. Having said that, this is super easy to read and very to the point - which I appreciated. It would even be something I'd consider reading to my son, if I wasn't so opposed to the message within... and if I thought he'd sit still long enough to listen. Honestly, I don't like the story and never thought it was so amazing. Even when I was a moody and over dramatic teenager, I thought they were being a teensy bit extreme. Also it looks like the only reason Romeo was at that party in the first place is because he was trying to get over someone else?! And then he marries Juliet the next day? Can someone say rebound... Anyway, I'm glad I finally got more or less the whole story now, and I'm putting my dislike aside and suspending belief that people were this over dramatic knowing that this was supposed to shock audiences. What I choose to take from this is the fact that the Montague's and the Capulets finally figured out that lifelong family feuds are dumb and causes unnecessary strife. I'd say a solid Meh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |

This is a great adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. I just finished teaching it with my freshman and I think that this would be a nice addition for the kids who really struggle with the story. |
