An interesting, short read. I didn't love it, but it's an interesting glimpse into two people who are trying to find themselves.

Sarah Menkedick's "Wild River Blues" describes fourteen days she spent with her musician brother on a very low budget east-coast backpacking adventure. It's part travelogue, part philosophy as they explore what it means to be artists in today's world.

I didn't think I'd like this book at first, but you know what? It certainly grew on me. A writer in her thirties goes on a hiking and road trip with her younger brother, both of them with the idea it'll lead to them finding themselves – her as an author, him as a jazz musician. Yes, a lot of this is them both absorbing the idea of their self-change, and admitting it is bollocks to have ever thought of it, then reneging on that admission – to the tune of bad music – but there's scenery, adventure and character here. So while I didn't ever like the brother much, and wouldn't have wanted much time in her company as like as not, this novella-length travel diary is fine. It left me with itchy feet, and some inclination to see what they were seeing – but I doubt it would ever change me…
