Nothing Left to Lose is the first book I've read by Dan Wells, as well as the first book in this series. Although it is not the first book in the John Cleaver series, I don't think I missed out on anything. It took a little time to get into the story, but once the pacing ramped up I was hooked and happy to be along for the ride. I will definitely check out the rest of the series!

Got the copy as part of a blog tour. I tried reading the book however, I wasn't able to pass the second chapter because I realized that this is a part of a series and reading the first one would be much better.

Another thrilling installment in the series. I go into each story hoping for more intrigue, complexity and angst and Dan Wells doesn’t disappoint.

John still battles his urges as he continues to hunt down the Withered. In each book I learn more about these monsters and what drives them. Terrifying they may be, but you’re given insight into their side of the story, which left me feeling conflicted about them, kind of.

The authors choice to tell this in first person POV from John’s perspective was a wise one. He keeps evolving, growing mentally stronger but still needing some releases for his dark urges. As a budding serial killer who has rules to keep him from killing the innocent, I find him one of the most compelling characters I’ve come across.

There’s an interesting twist that makes for an edgy read. And it’s a gut wrenching finale in the last third of the book as good and bad become entwined in a fight to survive. I wish I could tell you the last scene of the book. All I could think was, it’s about time.

'Nothing Left to Lose' is the latest installment in the highly original and thrilling John Cleaver series. One of the great things about this series is the fact that each book is just as fantastic as the last. A lot of series have a tendency to go downhill after a couple of installments, but this is definitely an exception to that. I fell in love with these books after reading the first one and I continue to be happily surprised with each successive novel.

Every aspect of the book is very well done. The main character, John, is complex and fascinating. He's a teenager, but has seen and done things that most adults will never get to in their lives. Even though he's a legitimate monster hunter who's wanted by the FBI, he's really accessible and easy to identify with. John is certainly realistic with his many flaws and shortcomings, along with his redeeming qualities. I continue to love watching him battle and kill the Withered, and getting to know him even better. The secondary characters are always realistic as well, and the people we get to know in this book are no different. The plot was exhilarating and had me eagerly devouring each page as quickly as I could. Every book in this series continues to pleasantly surprise me with the originality and uniqueness - both of which are so hard to find anymore. I loved learning everything I could about these monsters that John hunts and kills. Every part of the story is richly detailed with vivid imagery and descriptions that bring it all to life in front of the reader's eyes.

The last thing I want to touch on is one of the most important to me personally: the writing style. The book is done from the first person point of view - from John's perspective. This was the perfect fit for the book, and I'm so incredibly happy the author chose to do it this way. I love the deeply personal connection to the narrator it allows, and it almost always allows me to have a richer reading experience than any other writing style. I don't think any other POV would have done the story justice - and I'm really glad I'll never have to find out. I highly recommend this book and series to fans of fantasy, paranormal, urban fantasy, thrillers, and horror!

“Stop thinking with your concealed carry permits. Not everyone is evil.”
“That doesn’t mean everyone’s good,” I said.
“Obviously not,” she said. “But it does mean that everyone’s worth saving.”
“That I’ll agree with,” I said, and looked back at the news article. Saving people was the whole reason I was here.

Nothing Left to Lose is the final installment in the John Cleaver series. I'm particularly fond of monster hunter and FBI/crime novels, so rolling them all into one neat little packaged series has been a big hit.

Following an unfortunate start, John became a teenage monster hunter; both working for and running from the FBI at various stages. You can say they have a complicated relationship. In Nothing Left to Lose he’s on his own for the first time, once again hunting the Withered. It’s an interesting to see John take all of what he’s learned, and all he’s taught himself, and hunt down Withered while also trying to keep himself off the FBIs radar.

Readers not only see John battle with Withered, but he still has the same internal struggle from the first book; he’s NOT a serial killer, but he still has urges that makes him feel like a monster himself. That aspect of his character shined in this book and played out well with the plot.

I do wish that there was more action, but this book revolved more around mystery and conclusions than full out battles (though it still has a fair share of those as well).

Overall, Nothing Left to Lose was was a nice conclusion to a great series.

I have to say that I had not read the other books via this series before getting this one. So why did I grab it? That would be because I love this author's books!! So I went online and looked up what happened in the other books and I have to say that I have officially put them all on my wishlist! This series is so good!

This one is just as good as the last one (from what I've read about the other books). and I can't wait to be able to read them all once right after the other. This is soon to be a new die hard series that I will have to get and devour. I can't wait to catch the movie of book one coming out this Aug. I know its going to be amazing. This one has some great characters and you can see the seasoned writer that Dan Wells is. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

All the characters in this one were great. You get to know each one and you won't want to let them go after the book is done. The monsters, plot, and story as a whole were also very fascinating and again I can't wait to get the other books so I can revisit this one with new eyes. Although I hadn't read the other books I didn't feel to lost since I looked them up. But I would say that if you are wanting to read this series start at book one.

If your a fan of this author's other works or just want a book about a monster hunter I would pick this series up asap!
