This is the second book in the Coming Home series and we get Quinn's story this time. I really loved Quinn in the first book and I was looking forward to seeing what Ms. Sloane had in store for her. This is a second-chance love story. Quinn and Tate were young lovers who were separated for 9 years when Tate made a decision that would change their young lives. Quinn is a strong, sassy woman who has struggled with abandonment issues her entire life. I enjoyed reading her journey as she works to reclaim herself. Tate is a terrific, hot Harper Sloan character. He has his work cut out for him trying to win back Quinn but for him, she is the only one. This was an enjoyable read and I was entertained as Quinn and Tate's journey unfolded and they worked toward their own happily ever after. |
Kiss My Boots by Harper Sloan No joke from a lie, I am speechless with this story. I was hesitant with this one, only because the first book I liked but didn’t LOVE. But here laddies and gents, book lover all around the world… THIS book called KISS MY BOOTS is everything I love. As always Harpers writing is perfect, flawless and all so romantic. “Your life will always overcorrect your steps for you until you’re finally on the right one” Kiss My Boots is 100 percent standalone, it is a second chance romance and you will laugh, swoon and be pleasantly surprised at how quick you will eat this book up. Yes, we are back in her Oak Pine world, Texas. Tate and Quinn, 9 years they have been apart and not because they wanted to be apart but because when you are young and so in love and have nothing but fears and adults standing in your way, your miss-leaded to do the “right” thing… in this case what Tate did was so swoon worthy I forgave him as soon as he explained to us why he sacrificed 9 years away from Quinn. Quinn, is so perfect. Sassy, quick to the punch and a kick ass mechanic… yes, a lady mechanic… so hot! Tate is a lady doctor, and the one liner’s in this are so funny you will be wiping away tears from laughing so hard, and because their romance is of the charts so sexy and sweet. The passion they have for each other ignites our pages. “He’s a doctor. Trained to see patients in a clinical manner. He doesn’t show up at the office and spend the whole day coming over himself because there’s some lady pockets in his face. It’s a doctor’s office, not an orgy by appointment.” The cover on this one, is life. I love staring at my copy on my bookshelves. Jesus Jones, you must pick this book up! I can’t fault anything, everything was perfect I am so excited for the next one, even though while writing this book I have already finished it but just to be able to remember everything you loved about it while writing a review. Arc was given to me for an honest review, and since then I have purchased my paperback and love it even more. PNR Book Lover Reviews Ang |
Kiss My Boots By: Harper Sloane 📚💕⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💕📚 Second Chances could lead to Forever! Kiss my boots is book two and a perfect Coming home/Second Chance Book that follows Quinn Davis and Tate Montgomery. Childhood friends and teenage lovers, separated by circumstances beyond their control and the people that control the strings of life. Tate finally has the opportunity to return to Pine Oak and try to get back the woman that he loves. Quinn's world turns upside down the minute she hears that voice on the phone. Now he's coming back to town...this can't be happening. Right? Or could it but Quinn is definitely not ready for the emotions she if feeling. Tate has his work cut out for him. Not only does he have to worry about winning Quinn back, but there are her brothers and her best friend Leigh. Add continuing the medical practice that his grandfather ran in town and Tate has a very full plate. Maverick and Leigh as well as Clay will be around to help Quinn and Tate when pride is set aside. There are ups and downs throughout the book. Harper Sloan does an amazing job in letting us into the minds of both Tate and Quinn writing in dual POV my personal favorite. She’ll of course bring all the emotions and laughs as well in this incredibly relatable and oh so swoon inducing book that will have the tears running and you hoping that Quinn and Tate get there Happily ever after. Thanks to Netgally for letting me read and review!!! |
I've been looking forward to the second book in this series for quite some time now! I have to admit, the first novel was quite the sultry read, so it probably was a good thing I took a break before reading Kiss My Boots. I needed a little time to decompress... a girl can only read so many sex scenes in one week! But, with that being said, I did love this novel as well as the first. Now I'm looking forward to book three! Kiss My Boots is centered around my favorite character Quinn. She just seems so relatable and down to earth and I absolutely love her relationship with her brothers and her best friend. Harper creates such a fun world for these characters in a small sleepy town that still has a little kick to it. But enough about Quinn, let's talk about the sexy main man Tate. Several things to point out here: 1. He's a doctor 2. His name is Tate 3. He's a good ole country boy 4. Do you even need a four? You guys, Tate stole my heart from the first moment we were introduced to him and I knew that I had to know more about him. Quinn and Tate have such a strong back story and I loved the flash backs to their past as well as getting to know them in the present. This novel was full of gal pal chats, sex scenes, and emotional family moments and I couldn't have asked for more. I loved it and can't wait for book three! If you're a fan of romance novels with some serious sex scenes, then I would highly recommend this novel. If sex scenes make you feel all weird inside (I'll admit, this is me sometimes) then you might want to skip this one. |
Dear friend… Guess what I have for you this time? Another amazing book by Harper Sloan. Trust me, kiss my boots is just as amazing as the first book of the series. In this book, we have Quinn Davis, the youngest Davis, sister of Maverick (from Lost Rider) who, after almost nine years finds herself in front of Tate Montgomery, her past. Basically, they were together for some time nine years ago. At the time he was meant to go to medical school, but medical school wasn’t where Quinn was. But that wasn’t a problem because they were used to be physically together only in the summers because he was away the rest of the year studying. They would have to keep being together only in the summers and spend the rest of the time texting each other as they always did. Nothing big. But right after leaving for medical school, Tate never texted her back! Or called her. Or so much as wrote her a letter. After that last summer, Tate just vanished, and Quinn stayed in Pine Oak mourning all the reasons that may have made him leave her just like her mother did. So, in last nine years, Quinn turned herself in the owner of Davis Auto Works as a mechanic and Tate turned into the doctor that his parents always wanted. But now he’s back and he’s ready to explain his reasons as to why he left Pine Oak nine years ago without even a goodbye. Ok, so you know how much I loved Lost Rider so when I say that this book is just as good as that one, you know I completely fell in love with it. Honestly, the first thing that came to my mind when I was reading the book was “This is basically the same thing as the Lost Rider”. And it’s true. The books really are similar, but you know what? Both books are also really amazing. At first I was like “I’m not giving this book 5 stars since it’s the same thing as the previous book” but then I thought “Dang it, Harper Sloan just wrote two (probably three because I bet the third book is just as good) amazing books so I’m giving the book five-deserved-and-not-enough stars”. If you loved the first book or if simply you enjoy a good second chance romance, you really need to treat yourself with this book (you don’t need to read the first book of the series to read this one)! You can have a good laugh, your cheeks will probably burn with all the hotness in this book and the most important, you will have a man who’s ready to fall on his knees to have the love of his life back. Tate is just perfection. I wouldn’t say he’s the ultimate cowboy since he’s now used to wearing suits and living in the city but he’s equally dreamy. The tricky person in this book is for sure Quinn. Her mother abandoned her and her brothers when she was little (she can’t even remember her face) so she has some abandonment issues. But she’s still incredibly funny, loves her work and still manages to be straightforward and honest when it comes to her feelings about Tate. For those who read the book Lost Rider, there are some things that you will like to know about this book. First, we can still enjoy some of Jana’s sass. She’s still hilarious and still worried about everyone’s hooha. Then there’s also Leighton and Maverick’s wedding. If you loved Leighton and Maverick’s story, be aware that there’s a lot of them in this book as well. And then, the sex scenes! Good Lord! All in all, it’s just impossible to not fall in love with them. As always, Sloan simply outdid herself with this book and I just can’t recommend it enough! I will see you soon (since I’m jumping right into the next book thanks to Simon & Schuster) Bye |
Kiss my boots is the second book in the series and you may not have to read the first one to enjoy Quinn's story...it's a good idea to get more back story thats going on in this one. Quinn has been known as the hell raiser...well hello she was basically raised by two boys what do you think is gonna happen? She is in charge and owns and runs and works in her Family's auto shop. It's where she finds herself restoring and customizing vehicles. Tate left years ago and left the woman he loved behind. Now he's getting ready to come back and make a stand to get her back. However what will he do when she fights back and he has to tell her why he left so long ago? This is a great second chance romance that leaves you laughing and feeling right along with it. I can't wait for the next one in the series. |
3.5 stars After reading Lost Rider, I was interested in Maverick’s two siblings. Kiss My Boots focuses on the youngest sibling and only girl Quinn. This was a nice second chance love story. Quinn has always kept guys on a leash after her true love left town. Now years later, Tate has come back and sets his sight on Quinn. Will these two reconnect or is their love lost? I enjoyed seeing the push and pull in the beginning and how their feelings haven’t changed. But when they got it right, it was wonderful. Quinn and Tate were the right combination. I liked seeing the two of them together. The banter, the interactions, and the moments were good. Seeing how their relationship progressed as the story went was nice. I also enjoyed the glimpses of the past that we got-it showed how deep their connection was. Now this wasn’t just a story about love, there is a key component of the series that will continue to show up. I liked how Quinn handled it and Tate was there for her throughout. I loved the relationship between Quinn and her brothers-Clayton and Maverick, together no matter what-and also her best friend Leighton. Overall I enjoyed this pleasant read. I can’t wait for Clayton’s book! |
4.5 Stars!!! Quinn Davis grew up as the younger sister of two big brothers who she knew would always have her back. Growing up as a tomboy she was more interested in fixing cars than applying makeup. Quinn was never too interested in boys until that first summer she laid eyes on Tate Montgomery!! She was smitten from first sight, and as her attraction grew so did her feelings!!! That is until Tate broke her heart!! Now 9 years later, Quinn hasn’t found someone to fill the void Tate left, but her thought is it’s better to be alone than brokenhearted!! That is until Quinn finds out Tate is moving back to Pine Oak!!! All bets are off!!! Will Quinn finally be able to get answers as to what went wrong!?? Will Tate be able to redeem himself!??! Will Quinn be able to open heart ever again!?!? Oooooooh, my!!! I was so excited to dive back into the Coming Home series!! I fell in love with the little town of Pine Oak, TX and all of it’s endearing residents in the first novel (Lost Rider)!! In Lost Rider we met Quinn, and I was so happy to get her story in Kiss My Boots! I thought Harper Sloan did a great job of pulling every emotion out of me—love that. I love a second chance romance and I thoroughly enjoyed Harper Sloan’s sassy, steamy and southern spin on it!! Kiss My Boots is a 4.5 star read that I recommend to everyone!!! |
Quinn Davis lives a content life. She runs her garage and is happiest when she is under the hood of an old car while bringing it back to life. Or so she tells herself. Then a phone message turns her lies to dust. Tate Montgomery did what he had to do to protect those he loved from the people who were supposed to love him. His parents should have had his best interests at heart. Instead, good old dad wanted him to be someone he wasn't. But Tate did it anyway. He walked away from the only woman he ever loved and the life he ever wanted because that's what would keep them safe. But now was his time, and there was no stopping him or his will to get back all that they were meant to be. Seeing Tate again hurt more than Quinn could have ever imagined. He was even more gorgeous, sexy and dreamy than when they were teens. And he wanted her back. But could she ever forgive him for abandoning her? Quinn had been abandoned before. Abandoned by the mother who was supposed to love her. Abandoned by the brother who could no longer take the abuse from their father. Then, abandoned by him. Could she risk her heart again? She had never given it to anyone else since Tate broke it... It had always been his. Kiss My Boots is a funny, sweet, heartwarming, eye tearing, second chance love story that will have readers glued to it from beginning to end. Quinn is funny, sassy and devious. Tate is strong, sexy and loyal. Together they are simply perfect. Can't wait to read about the last Davis brother. |
4 1/2 Star Review..... KISS MY BOOTS is the second edition in this wonderful series and another winner by Harper Sloan. Readers of book one will remember Quinn as an intensely loyal, independent and sassy woman, but there was obviously something more, and it appears that more was Tate Montgomery. As second chance romances go, this one is exceptional! Quinn in not inclined to let Tate back into her heart so he can break it once again, but Tate knows what he lost and is determined to recapture the passion and connection that they had in the past. A beautifully written story that will keep any reader engrossed from start to finish, and breathing a little sigh of regret when the last page is turned. |
Kiss My Boots is the second book in the Coming Home series. Very much a second chance romance, I like Quinn and Tate and the interaction between them and all the other characters made for an enjoyable read. Although this can be read as a standalone I would recommend reading it in order as characters from Lost Rider appear in this story. I look forward to reading Cowboy Up |
Kiss My Boots is the second book in Harper Sloan's Coming Home series, that centers around the Davis siblings. Lost Rider is Mavericks story, Kiss My Boots is Quinn's story and Cowboy Up is Clay's story. Each book is about the siblings finally get their HEA's and overcoming their tragic pasts. Each sibling has their set of problems they must face before finally feeling a sense of calm and a full heart. I read Lost Rider and loved it. In Lost Rider we meet Quinn, Mavericks little sister and Leighton's BFF. I adored her, so I knew I had to read this. I knew her story was going to be emotional and badass, that's just Quinn. What I wasn't expecting was Tate Montgomery...ohhhh. Growing up Quinn had been in love with Tate since she was eleven, through the years that bond and love grew, but it ended abruptly ten years ago. Why? And why now is Tate back? Grab this book and settle in for a beautiful second chance romance filled with angst, humor and sexy scenes that will leave you hot and bothered. Quinn has been raised by boys so she's no girly girl. Nope, she's a badass, who loves big trucks and working on cars, cowboy boots and cowboys. She's quite feisty and independent, but she's also missing something in her life that her two older brothers who have protected her from so much, can't protect that missing piece of her heart. Quinn gave that away to Tate years ago and has never fully healed from his devastating departure. Now he's back with a vengeance and is going to fight for her. But will Quinn forgive him? She's already ready to bend when she hears from him the first time. Will Quinn get the answers she desperately wants, but doesn't want? Tate Montgomery...Tate Montgomery is a man who tried to do what he thought was the best, protecting the girl he loved was all that mattered even if it meant losing her forever. As they years passed Quinn has never been far from his mind. Now with nothing standing in his way, he's ready to go back to Pine Oak and fight his way back into her life...no matter what! He wants her back and wants what was taken from them. Will Tate win her his way into her heart again? The chemistry between these two...hot! The banter was funny, sexy and will give you the feels. Tate just has a way with words that will leave you swooning, he's dirty and his tongue could send you to your knees. Seriously, I need a cowboy. There is one scene that left me fanning myself and oh my was it full of steam. I will never look at a set of stirrups the same way. I love second chance romances and this was a fantastic one. My only problem was at times I didn't like the wording, maybe because I'm not a southern. I don't know... it just seemed like wording for people older. As always with Harper's work I love that she gives me and entertaining and engaging story. Kiss My Boots is full of humor, sexy moments, emotional drama and characters that you will love. The ending left a huge smile on my face. I can't wait to visit them again. Clay I'm coming for you next! 4.5 Stars! |
Kiss My Boots is the second in the Davis sibling series, and it's a great one. I don't like it as much as I loved Lost Rider, but I still found it sweet and sexy and Quinn is even more interesting in her own story. Quinn and Tate had been best friends since they were young. They'd spend every summer together when he was at his grandparents'. And then the rest of the 10 months of the year they'd be on the phone together, texting, etc. When they were teens they finally consummated their intense attraction and started planning their future together. All they had in front of them was a shiny bright future where he'd go to med school and she'd take over running her family's garage. But then boom, one day it was gone and they were no more. Until 9 years later one of her mechanics tells her some guy called. She knew before she even saw the piece of paper with Tate's name and number on it who it would be and it scared her because she never thought she'd hear from or see Tate again. But Quinn is a Davis, and she's tough, so she calls him and puts him in his place and lets him know that yes, she'll restore his grandpa's truck, but he'll only be talking to her mechanics, never with her, he has no place in her life now and he'll have to just deal with it. But, she doesn't realize that Tate's coming back home to stay and that he's determined to at least see if they can be friends. Right...friends. Yep, sure. Quinn and Tate have got a long way to go, though. First, she'll have to be told why he cut her off 9 years ago. Then she'll have to process it and get over the pain. Tate has a lot of making up to her to do. She'll have to deal with the abandonment issues her mother and Tate have left her. And she'll have to deal with two overprotective brothers who just don't want to see her hurt again. Thank God she has Leigh and that their friendship is as solid as it ever has been. Because she'll need to lean on her in order to get through the ride Tate will take her on as they finally get their chance to have a future together. The only issues I had with Kiss My Boots are that I don't like the way Tate dealt with leaving Quinn back in the day. I won't say why, I'll just say that it was more than a little weak of him. Yes, he was a teenager, and he was in a bad position, but he could have explained why without or at least before, cutting Quinn out of his life so completely. The way he went about it was cruel, really cruel. And if I'd been Quinn, I'd have made him work a lot harder to gain her forgiveness. Not because he disappeared, but because he didn't give her an explanation before doing so. He owed her at least some groveling and he didn't really do much of that. He also wasn't quite alpha enough for me. He's sweet, though, and pretty damn sexy. Quinn, though, was the real star here. She's everything she was in Lost Rider - funny, tough, and most definitely a hell-raiser, and here in her own story, she's more developed and even more interesting as we get her backstory and her day to day thoughts. I'm so glad she got her love back and it was awesome seeing Maverick and Leigh and Clay again. Can't wait to read Clay's story - Cowboy Up! |

Quinn is the tom-boy of the family choosing to run the family owned auto shop. Tate was the love of her life and when he left town she was broken hearted. Tate comes back to town and the sparks are slow burning. I loved book 2 in the series and can't wait for Clayton's book. |
Kiss My Boots is the second book in the Coming Home series and can be read as a standalone. The main characters Quinn and Tatum have a history that was cut short by Tatum's dad. Years later, Tatum is ready to go back home and claim Quinn because after all, SHE IS HIS! I liked the characters and enjoyed the parts in this story that gave us Tatum and Quinn's interactions. I enjoyed Tatum's character a lot because he knew what he wanted and wasn't scared to go after it; it may have taken a few years for him to work through some things but he was determined. There are secrets that needs to be revealed and Quinn and her brothers need to know. Quinn was an okay character for me. I wanted to see that strong willed character that everyone claimed her to be and I only saw her appear once; I was a little disappointed in that. However, I loved that her job was an uncommon job for women when it comes to books. I love that she was a tomboy in a way. I also enjoyed the closeness she had with her brothers Clay, Maverick and Maverick's wife Leighton. There were also things I disliked about this story. I found the story to be slow at it seemed to move at that pace throughout the whole story. I also thought there were a lot of unnecessary conversations and words. At times, I wondered if the author just added things to make the story longer and in a way I felt as if sometimes the unnecessary words and conversations hurt the story in a way because it made the story drag out. Also, although I knew the unnecessary drama with Ella was bound to happen and that also could have been avoided or left out. It truly added nothing to the story. She should have been forgotten in the beginning of the story where Tate left her. All in all, this book was an okay read for me. I really enjoyed the ending; it was sweet. I think I would have enjoyed the story more if some things were left out. I think that would have improved the story's flow. However, I still recommend readers giving this book a try because although it wasn't a top read for me, it just my be one for you. |
Hot, sexy, sweet and passionate. Kiss My Boots is the second installment in the amazing Coming Home series. This is a second chance romance, a trope that I absolutely love, aside from the enemy-to-lovers theme. I truly love when characters are given a chance to re-do their lives, mend their broken hearts, correct the mistakes of their youth by choosing a different path in life, a better one, and embrace a happy ending that should have been theirs in the first place. The story follows Quinn Davis (Maverick’s sister from book one) and Tate Montgomery. These two met when they were eleven years old and became inseparable until the age of eighteen. Every summer when Tate was there in the little town of Pine Oaks, Texas to visit his grandparents, he was the one who filled a void in Quinn’s life. While they could not have come from more completely different lives, their friendship naturally evolved into a romantic attachment that only grew in intensity as they became older. They were each other’s firsts and their love was all consuming and unbreakable. Forever promises were made, but one day, with no explanation and no goodbye, Tate left and broke Quinn’s heart in the process leaving her devastated. "The foundation we built was meant to be everlasting—even if his promises hadn’t been. He taught me trust. He showed me love. Then he gave me pain." Nine years, that’s how long it has been since Quinn and Tate have seen one another. Quinn moved on with her life and thought she was finally over it. She is now a mechanic and the owner of a car shop. Quinn is this strong, independent, and feisty woman that has taken some hits but keeps going. She enjoys her simple life and loves taking care of her cars and spending time with her two overprotective brothers, Clayton and Maverick and her best friend Leighton. That is until Tate Montgomery returns and tugs on her heart strings all over again. The intense feelings she had buried deep inside rise up and refuse to go away. Blackmailed, forced to stay away and to cut off contact with Quinn, Tate had no choice then, but to sacrifice his happiness by leaving the woman he loved behind. He finished school, started his career and became a successful gynecologist, and went through the motions of his life. But now things have changed, Tate doesn’t have anything standing in his way. He wants Quinn back. He wants to give them back what was stolen from them all those years ago. "It’s time to end this farce I’m stuck living and take back my life—and the woman who has always held my goddamn heart." But will the truth cause Quinn to hate him more for not fighting for their chance then, or will it change everything and make her look at the whole situation and Tate in a different light? "Rest of my days, I’ll feel the same desperate need for you, Quinn. One day I’m gonna fill you up until my seed takes root and I’ll do it again and again after that. Gonna give you that family we always talked about, but first, I’m beggin’ you to give it all to me, Quinn. Give me this body I crave, but give me the heart inside it I need.” Loved Quinn and Tate! Both great characters and they had so much chemistry, history, love, passion and friendship. They were perfectly matched in every possible way and I truly enjoyed the way they loved one another. In the style that I have come to expect and love, Harper Sloan has once again written a story full of depth, emotion, humour, and her trademark, awesome secondary characters that give an ever-greater dimension to the story. The bottom line is that with this author you always get the real deal. Can’t wait to read Clayton’s story. He's been my favorite from the start and I just know it’s gonna be worth the wait! |
If you have read Lost Rider you would have met Quinn, Maverick's sister. Quinn is just country. Pure country. I loved her! She let a man break her heart....and 9 years later he waltzes back into town....and Tate wants to win her back. This series is fabulous. Let me tell you why. I feel everything written in these books. I feel everything these characters go through. Now give me Clay! |
"The Ghost of Heartbreak Past apparently is back in Pine Oak. Tatum Montgomery. Jesus Jones." Oh, my heart!!! Friends to lovers. First love lost. This book had so much that captures my heart and attention! Quinn has lived many years never really getting over her first love, first heartbreak. But with the notification that he's coming back for good, she has a hard time facing him once again. But he doesn't exactly make it easier for her either. Tate is now able to claim what's always been his...Quinn. After years of sacrifice, he's ready to get the one girl that's always owned his heart back for good. When the truth behind his years away coming out in the open, will he be able to get her back? "I think it's time I stop lettin' what happened years ago stand in the way of me livin'." "What I did marked you." "Marked you too, honey." This book was full of emotion, laughter, family, and friendship. The flashbacks made my heart flutter, and the way they worked through their pasts is something wonderful. They say you can't go home again, but Tate does, and it's a ride of a lifetime. Quinn gives him hell and he gives it right back. The bickering mixed with their deep love is perfection to me. "You finally know the man I am now?" "I'd know him anywhere." "You givin' him your forever?" "God, yes." "Never, Quinn. I'll never spend another day without you in it. You hear me? I'll spend every day makin' up for the time we lost. That pain will never touch you again." Can I just live inside this story? I could picture every single detail. From their reunion, the auto shop Quinn works, the farm, Homer and Bertha (you'll see;)), and every single word spoken. Yes I could picture their faces saying everything. That's vivid this book is! Harper Sloan is one of my favorites for a reason! The stories she writes and the words she weaves are perfection to me!! Now that I've had Maverick and Quinn Davis...I need me some Clay!! Because I have a feeling the oldest Davis sibling will have the greatest story of all<3 Wonderful read!! "It's our time now, Tate. And anyone dumb enough to try and stand in our way can just Kiss My Boots." |
Whew! This book isn’t what I expected at all. Those Texan (at least in the book) have a very colorful vernacular, using four-letter words like raspberries on cereal! So ladies, do not read this book with the mindset of a Regency read or any historical romance. I wouldn’t even go for a contemporary romance. This one borders on the edge of erotica. It sizzles in its intensity. I did what any reader does who wants to experience another world—I cowgirled up and read it! The story is written in first person in two points of view. Some scenes are seen through Quinn’s, others through Tate’s. In both cases, these two have been hurt from the past. Quinn’s hurt lies in after years of friendship with Tate as young children, she gives herself to him. She was 18. Tate, too, gave himself to her, the first for both, with promises of a future together. He was off to medical school. She never heard from him again. What do you think that did to her over-protective brothers Clay and Maverick, let alone Quinn? Take that and think Texan! Tate loved Quinn from afar. He had no choice but to break the relationship. His reasons are heroic and I’ll leave that for the read. For Quinn it was simple. “He taught me trust. He showed me love. Then he gave me pain.” Quinn speaking to herself. “I don’t deny I have issues, but I would be hard-pressed to find a single soul in the whole big-ass world who doesn’t. I’ve come a long damn way in working past those dang issues, too; then all it takes is one gusty blast from the past to kick up dust as a harsh reminder that you can polish the past until the wood shines, but the grime always settles back in.” When Quinn finds out Tate is coming back to Pine Oak: “It’s out of my system, thankfully before Tate returned, because the last thing I plan on showing him is how deeply I still feel the emptiness his departure left behind. Nope. He won’t get that. Quinn, the hell-raisin’ badass is back, and Tate Montgomery can kiss my boots.” After nine long years, Tate has his chance to return to Pine Oak, to continue in his grandfather’s medical clinic. He knows he’ll have to eat dirt with Quinn. He’ll grovel if he needs to. He’s hurt Quinn badly. How can a love be rekindled after that? The plot is a good one, damaged people learning to trust again. Texas drawls off the pages. Characters are straight talkers, with dear Quinn and her friend Leighton talking straighter than most. They shock me, at the same time get a giggle. They both share in a wicked, twisted sense of humor. Quinn takes on a challenge as if her life depends on winning. Leighton is the kind of forever friend who’ll support you whatever you decide. She is the support Quinn needs so badly to weather the past, which also includes her mother walking away from the family when she was young. The characters, in essence, begin mattering to you. Quinn’s attraction to Tate, Quinn’s relationship with her beloved brothers, Leighton’s supportive role getting Quinn to cowgirl up and show her stuff. (Don’t use stuff, change it to sh*t) The story is littered with it. LOL! I enjoyed the small-town feel, meeting some employees from the clinic, and the hysterically older Jana who works at the PieHole with Leighton, saying things one doesn’t even think! |
