Sweet story. Little bit of sport for those sports romance junkies. Both main characters are interesting and bring the story to life.

Jensen “The Rocket” Lund suffered from a sports injury in last book, one that’s taken him out of the last playing season with surgeries and physical therapy. Facing such a serious and possibly life altering event has changed some of Jensen’s views on life. I like the change and growth it brought out in him. He wanted to be recognized as more than just an athlete, rich guy, or a playboy. Yes, football is a large part of his life, but he realized that things could change so easily. Casual hookups no longer appeal to him, either, but Rowan Michaels, the woman who lives across the hall breaks all his relationship rules: no single moms, no cheerleaders, and no health care workers. The rules have served him well, until he met Rowan. She’s gorgeous on the inside and out, so they’ll just be friends. Right…that’s really going to work out!

Rowan has worked hard to get where she is as a coach and cheerleader for The Vikings football team, and her job is important to her as the sole provider for her six-year-old son, Caulder. She’s very wary of jocks, won’t date one, since she got burned so badly by Caulder’s father. But Jensen Lund tempts her like no other man since she’s become a mother. He’s surprisingly sweet and funny, and has a way with Caulder. Still, no matter how much she’s attracted Rowan must be careful. It’s not only her heart on the line. Also, there’s a “no fraternization” policy that could threaten her career if she decides Jensen is worth the trouble.

When I Need You is my favorite installment so far in the Need You series! The romance was a slow build, friends-first-relationship that made the pay-off when they finally got together sweeter for the wait. I enjoyed their “just friends” situation, too. Their flirty banter back and forth, and sizzling chemistry made it obvious Jensen and Rowan would burn-up the sheets once they got together! I appreciated there wasn’t any unnecessary drama between them, because it’s so frustrating when that’s thrown in just to create conflict if it doesn’t feel natural. I liked how Jensen handled the “no fraternization” policy, as well.

I so love the Lund family, especially Jensen’s mom, Selka! This Swedish matriarch is a fierce momma cat to all her grown children, not that they always appreciated that, lol. Her attempts at English sayings were hilarious:

“You are feisty? Or just contrary?”
“Both. It’s harder for you to put me in a headlock if I’m standing across from you.”
“Headlock.” Her lips curled slightly. “I have no UPC moves.”
UPC? What the hell? “You mean…UFC?”
“Yah. Whatever. I am harmless.”
I laughed. “I doubt that.”

I look forward to a story centered on Dallas and Igor in the future, but I’m really hoping for one with Lucy and Jaxson Lund. It’s obvious Jax wants back in with his Lucy and young daughter, but he was a complete ass to them in the past! Not sure they could patch things up after all he did, but I’m sure Lorelei James could make it happen believably if she decides to.

Years ago, I went on a Lorelei James kick and absolutely devoured her Rough Riders series. I don’t recall the individual book details, but what I do remember was they were straight up contemporary romances and they were freaking hot. When I saw an arc available for When I Need You, I nabbed it thinking that it might be fun to rediscover Ms. James. Unfortunately, this was a friends-to-lovers slow burn romance, and when I say slow, I mean it. At times it felt like we were moving at glacial speeds.

Jensen is a pro football player who had been on injured reserve for over a year while he battled his way back from a major injury. It’s still up in the air whether he has recovered enough to play. While he’s been sidelined, he’s had to do some serious soul searching about what he will do if his football days are over.

Rowan is a pro-cheerleader for Jensen’s team and a cheer coach for the college. She’s also a single parent of an adorable 6-year-old boy named Calder. Rowan was singularly focused on being a Mom and was wary of getting in a relationship with anyone, much less a football player.

Jensen and Rowan get off to a seriously rocky start in more ways than one. Rowan sublets her brother’s apartment which just happens to be across the hall from Jensen’s. For a brief time, they didn’t even like one another. Then, quickly they morph into a great friendship. The chemistry between the two is palpable, but they both resist. These two have loads of obstacles to get through, not only the professional aspect seeing as they both are working for the same team but also personal ones.

I enjoyed the banter between the two which kept me from getting too frustrated at the super slow pace of the romance. There were times I wanted to knock their heads together since they both had boneheaded moments. My main frustration was the slow pace of not only the romance but the story too. I found myself putting the book down a lot to do other things. The story just didn’t completely grab me.

It wasn’t until I was writing this review that I realized I had actually read the first book in this series last year and from the review I wrote, although it was okay, like this one it didn’t wow me. I actually didn’t even recognize Brady and Lennox, the main characters from it and they had a lot of page time. Unfortunately, I think When I Need You Is about the same as the first one, a decent read but not one that’s going to stick with me.

I loved this book! I had a smile on my face throughout the entire book. WHEN I NEED YOU is the fourth book in Lorelei James’s Need You Series. Each book can be read as a standalone, but it’s a great series if you’d like to start at the beginning. The fourth book is Jensen Lund, the sexy football player and Rowan, a cheerleader and single mom’s book. It’s a friends to lovers romance and I enjoyed the slow build. The romance was steamy and I really enjoyed the interactions and banter between the characters. WHEN I NEED YOU was just a really fun and light romance. I highly recommend this book for readers looking for a fun and sexy romance to relax with this summer.

Well, first of all, I have to say that this is book four in the Need You series and I have to admit that I have not read any of the previous books in this series. I also have to admit that I don't usually read Football romance book because I am not a fan of Football.

I read this book the other day and I am happy to say that I just couldn't put this book down.

When I Need You is very well written and yes I was hooked from the very beginning.

Lorelei James is a new to me author and I can honestly say that I will be reading more of her books because I love her writing.

I give this book 5 out of 5

Jensen Lund, a pro football player, has three rules when it comes to women: 1) no single mothers, 2) no cheerleaders and 3) no medical personnel. He actually has plausible reasons for each one of those rules. Too bad he wants the woman who breaks them all.
Rowan Michaels, a cheerleader, has a rule when it comes to men: no athletes. And why, you may ask? Because a former relationship with an athlete left her with a baby to raise on her own. So, a relationship with a football player who is also her hot new neighbor? No, thank you.
But then, what if breaking all the rules is worth it?

For those who read the rest of the series, Jensen is Annika’s (from All you need) brother. Although this can be read as a standalone there’s a lot of involvement of Jensen’s family elements from other books.
Jensen is in one word: perfect. I loved everything about him and I’m not even talking about his physique. He doesn’t get annoyed with Rowan’s kid, Calder. He’s also very caring and loving with him. He puts his loved ones before the game. The only thing the man doesn’t know how to do is cook but well, the man can’t be perfect at every little thing right? He’s the one who’s sure he wants a relationship whilst Rowan is the one reticent about it. So you have a man on a mission!

Then we have Rowan, the responsible and worried sick mother of Calder who is a six-year-old sweeeeeet boy. She doesn’t go out, she doesn’t date, she loves her job but her son’s happiness is really her greatest joy. Calder’s father is an athlete who didn’t want to have anything to do with Rowan and Calder when she found out she was pregnant. She won’t say who the man is but Jensen can guess who he is but didn’t do anything about it. And honestly, I’m really happy with that. It wasn’t worth the scandal because of a man who was anything but a real man. So, two thumps up for the no drama vibe!

Sex is far from being the most important thing in this book. Yes, they’re desperate to get in bed together and yes, there’s a lot of sexual tension building between them. But we can’t forget that there’s a six-year old boy between them, and he’s the priority for both of them.

Altogether, it was amazing! I loved to see the Lund family once again! I loved Jensen to death. His character is incredibly well created! I think Lorelei really outdid herself with this character. And I loved the sweet little thing that is Calder. I really really enjoyed myself with this book!

Lorelei James delivers a sexy and engaging sports romance with When I Need You, and it is one of my favorite reads of the summer. Jensen Lund and Rowan Michaels are two extremely likable characters, and their romance is heart-warming.

Jensen is a star professional football player, who is not interested in single mothers, cheerleaders, or medical practitioners. Rowan checks all three of these boxes; therefore, it seems unlikely that Jensen would ever be interested in her. Wrong. Jensen might have rules for dating, but he’s immediately intrigued and drawn to Rowan even though she’s everything he claimed he never wanted.

Rowan is attracted to Jensen, but she has no interest in getting involved with a football player. But when Jenson lays on the charm, he is irresistible. Their relationship develops at the perfect place as the sexual tension builds, and readers will be captivated by their love story. I adore Jensen, and I love this charming and passionate romance.

I can’t even express to you how excited I was for this book. I have completely adored this series so far and When I Need You had a whole heap of things that made this the most anticipated of the series for me:

• Football
• No, not just any football. Minnesota Vikings football which happens to be my team of choice.
• Slight “forbidden” element
• I mean, he’s a Lund brother. ‘Nuff said.

It delivered. And in some ways? It was so much more than I expected. There’s this perfectly charming friends-to-lovers thing going on here and it felt so genuine to me. While there was always a little simmer going on underneath all of their exchanges, the genuine fondness and respect that Jensen and Rowan had for each other didn’t feel like its only purpose was to set up the relationship for something sexier (although, I mean – it totally did set up the relationship for something sexier…*fans self*). The relationship between them was a slow burn - sometimes it felt a little slower than I maybe would have liked at times - but ultimately both Rowan and Jensen were completely adorable and authentic and every moment I got to spend with them was a pleasure.

Seriously – SO adorable. There were moments that made me feel like my smile was going to break my face – it was so huge and beaming. The banter between Rowan and Jens was spot-on, and of course I adored the interaction among Lund family members. This has been a treat in every book so far – they’re adorably quirky, tough loving, and so much fun to read. I also particularly enjoyed the relationship between Jens and Rowan’s son, Calder. Men with children is basically an automatic ovary explosion, but there was truly something special about this pairing. It was, as I said, charming. And sweet. And the whole package was remarkably swoony.

Perfectly swoon-worthy, cocky, alpha-with-a-heart-of-gold male meets fiery, sweet, strong single mom and together they completely stole my heart. This series is a sure thing for me and When I Need You was another winner.

Life for Rowan Michaels has always been fairly straightforward: first comes her son and second her career. There isn’t room for anything or anyone outside her family. Yet, befriending Jensen Lund makes her realize she is missing something in her life, and he could be the perfect fit. Breaking down walls can be scary, but Jensen may be worth it.

Coming off a near-career-ending injury, Viking’s starter Jensen Lund has a new outlook on life, one that involves interests after his football days are over. So even though Rowan Michaels breaks all of his rules for dating, Jensen recognizes she, and her son, are special enough to break the rules.

When I Need You is another wonderful love story in the Need You series. Lorelei James knows how to capture my heart; her characters are honest, caring, wonderful people who love with their whole being. Jensen and Rowan may not believe they are the perfect fit for one another because of self-imposed rules and rocky histories, but Ms. James shows readers how they are actually two halves of a whole.

While I love pretty much every aspect of When I Need You, it is the fact that Ms. James creates a strong bond of friendship between Rowan and Jensen and then grows the romance slowly, that gives their story a solid foundation. I loved that external factors aren’t used to create conflict. It would have been so easy to use Jensen’s past, his fame, the no fraternization rule, or any number of other issues to drive a wedge between the pair. Yet instead, the author gives her characters inner-strength and integrity to examine their own choices and life decisions, then make the changes necessary to be happy. Both Jensen and Rowan are kind, giving, caring people, and the author uses this to bolster their romance, rather than take advantage of it to cause problems.

When I Need You focuses on Rowan and Jensen’s romance. Shared in first person, alternating POVs, there is little room to develop an external plot; however, the author does sew seeds for future couples and books. I found that I enjoyed remaining focused on the couple, seeing all aspects of their fledging romance, understanding their fears and concerns, and applauding their courage to open up with honest, heartfelt dialogue. It drew me in and kept me glued to the pages of my ebook.

Lorelei James has scored another touchdown with When I Need You. Overall, the Need You series is a winner, and you will not be disappointed picking up these standalone romances. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist… you’ll see when you read the book!)

My Rating: A, Loved It

If you love second chance romance novels this it the book for you.

If you adore hunky and swoony football players – you must read this book!!!

If you love super sweet and heart-warming love-stories this book is a MUST!

When I Need You (Need You #4) by Lorelei James had all of the above. The author delivered a solid performance, that was masterfully written, plotted and executed. In addition to a fantastic and thoroughly enjoyable cast, the novel delivered a heartfelt, and deeply affecting storyline that pulled me in until the last word.

Rowan and Jensen were both down-to-earth, mature and responsible individuals. Their interactions were a joy and deeply gratifying. The author eased them from friendship to relationship in a wonderfully slow paced fashion which worked for this couple and story perfectly. Add to it the sweetest little boy and you got a WINNER!!!

Jensen had lists/conditions of who to date – I was cracking up every time one of his rules were broken. It’s almost as if Rowan was put on this world just for Jensen to break ALL of his rules. HILARIOUS!!!

I think what I loved the most was how drama free When I Need You was. There was a good amount of sexual tension, some conflict which was solved in a very mature way, and lots of interaction and cameos from family members of the Lund clan.

Jensen was pretty swoon-worthy. Especially for a jock, he was a very dependable and grounded athlete, and not at all what I expected. He was focused on his career but never doubted his feelings and always knew his priorities in life – it was rather refreshing if I may say so.

All in all this book was so much more than I expected. And I can only recommend it to anyone that loves swoony jocks, strong single moms, and cute kids that steal the show.

Jensen Lund and Rowan Michaels each have their own set of rules for staying out of the wrong relationships, chief among them being to not date someone "at work". Add in the NFL policy of no fraternizing between players and cheerleaders, and they should stay as far away from each other as they possibly can. But as they live right across the hall from each other, it's hard to avoid encounters day in and day out. And then one visit leads to another...

'When I Need You' is my favorite of the series so far. Jensen and Rowan both have little experience with romance, so watching them fumble their way into love was delightful. There was a sweetness about their relationship that was not overshadowed by their desire to hit the sack. I could also relate to Rowan's situation: being a single mom, I also had to think carefully about whether or not to invite a man into my son's life. Rowan faces the potential for double the hurt as being with Jensen could cost her a job she loves. But when her security is threatened, Jensen steps up and takes a stand in a totally swoon-worthy moment.

Another thing that makes this series so enjoyable is the family dynamics. The Lund family is rich and powerful, yes, but above all that they are family. They love each other, support one another, tease and argue and enjoy being together. Unlike a lot of romance that stirs the pot of family angst with abuse and broken homes, the Lund family is a solid unit. They're people you'd like to know in real life. That makes this series not only worth reading, but worth reading a second time. Maybe a third or fourth!

A month or two ago I read my first book by Lorelei James. It was the first book in the Need You series, What You Need. I enjoyed that book and getting to meet the Lund family. Even though that was Brady's book, I found myself wondering about his youngest brother, Jensen. I have to admit it's because Jensen was a football player, and I'm a big sports romance fan. When I saw Jensen's book was up on NetGalley, I had to request it. I'm so, so happy I did.

I really enjoy Lorelei James' writing. Sometimes, contemporary romances can feel a bit dated. The characters act more mature than their age and aren't very easy to relate to. Lorelei James' books don't feel that way. The writing feels fresh and new. Rather than use third person narration, she tells her stories in first person dual point of view. It makes her characters vibrant and easy to connect with.

When I Need You was a cool sports romance because it involved two athletes. Jensen was a professional football player and Rowan a professional cheerleader. This book told their love story, but also spotlighted the harsh reality of how cheerleading is viewed in the professional football world. I loved how that was woven into the story and affected the couple.

I loved Rowan. She was a single mother who strove to give her son the best while doing what she loved. If I loved Rowan, I don't even know how to tell you how I felt about Jensen. That guy was incredible. He made this book. He was a gorgeous sports star with a huge heart. The way he was with both Rowan and her son made me swoon so hard. I couldn't get over how he dealt with the challenges of dating a single mother. Jensen was all in with them, and it made me so dang happy!

All of the characters in When I Need You shined. It didn't matter how big or small their part was in the story. They made me want to go back and read books two and three, and also hope there will be more book in this series. This is one of those series I wouldn't mind if it went on forever because each book can be read as a standalone and doesn't focus too much on past characters.

When I Need You went above and beyond my expectations for it. I knew I would enjoy it, but I didn't know how much I would adore it. If you have a soft spot for a sexy sports star falling for a single mother and her son, this is a book you won't want to miss. It's such a sexy, sweet story.

I swear, the Need You series just gets better and better with each book — and that says something, because I’ve loved them all. But this one? It’s going to be really tough to top. (It wouldn’t surprise me if I wind up eating those words, however, because Lorelei James is a genius who somehow knows exactly what I need — even if I didn’t know — and gives it to me.)

Jensen-freaking-Lund. My god. I’m claiming him. You can’t have him. I think Rowan will be ok with sharing. (HA!) But seriously, Jensen is totally swoon-worthy and amazing and I could make this entire review about him. (I’ll try not to.) But y’all, he’s a Harry Potter fan. Like, hardcore Harry Potter fan… with a wand and everything. He’s a professional football player who loves Harry Potter. Tell me, where can I find one for my own? More than that, however, he’s a genuinely good guy and great football player and he made me swoon harder than I’ve swooned over a book in a long time. My love for Jensen shouldn’t take anything away from Rowan, either. She was amazing — a strong, determined single mother. I want to be her friend. For real.

Jensen and Rowan’s romance was of the delicious slow burn variety I’ve found I love so darn much this year. There was a bit of a forbidden aspect to it as the team’s rules dictate players and cheerleaders aren’t allowed to date. Not that they would’ve been all that tempted in the beginning, to be honest, because each is the opposite of what the other is looking for, based on their past experiences. That’s part of what made their progression from strangers to friends to more even more special and fun to read. I shipped these two so freaking hard as I was reading. Jensen and Rowan gave me feels for days — especially when Ro’s son, Calder, was added to the mix. There was a scene with Jensen and Calder where I was seriously concerned my ovaries would, in fact, explode. (Hint: It involved Harry Potter.)

When I Need You is easily one of my favorite books of the year so far. It was fun and sexy, delivering both laughs and feels. I’m so in love with this Lund family that I just can’t get enough of them. Part of the beauty of this series is that my favorites from earlier in the series make an appearance in each new book and I love being treated to more from those characters. If you’re looking for your next favorite romance book, grab this one. But remember, Jensen’s mine and I’m not sharing. ;)

FAVORITE QUOTES

“I’m very good at two things that begin with the letter F, Ro. The first is football. The second… doesn’t have a damn thing to do with being friends.”

He didn’t have many books in his living room, but the ones he displayed looked well worn. He had three complete sets of Harry Potter books—hardcover, paperback and a leather-bound edition. He also had a wand in a box from Ollivanders and a PROPERTY OF HOGWARTS beer stein on the shelf next to the books, which I found sweet.

“Hanging out together… You’re just Coach Bossy Pants, a contrary redhead, a fierce mother to your son, a friend who makes me laugh, makes me think, makes me sad, bakes for me … and I forget you’re a stunningly beautiful woman. Then I get this close to you and I’m reminded in vivid detail that you are mega-hot, with those fuck-me bedroom eyes and kiss-me-now lips.”

“Christ, you smell like cookies and flowers and sex and I just want to devour you.”

“Jensen Lund. I am so crazy for you I don’t know what to do with it.”

Jensen has no filter, “not happening. And give me some credit, woman, I don’t only think of you naked in my bed. Sometimes I imagine you naked against the wall. Or naked in my shower. But my favorite is you naked on my kitchen table, all spread out in a lickable, effable feast.” This book sucked me in from page one, I loved Rowan's little boy, and I loved how Jensen was with him.

Dear Readers, What is your opinion about friendship between two gorgeous heterosexuals?  You'll find Ms. James answer in her latest contemporary romance in the Need You series.  To further make matters more interesting the two in question also have some very specific qualifying rules on the people they will date. Needless to say rules were meant to be broken and so the story proceeds...........
Jensen "The Rocket"  is a player on and off the football field.  Injured in the last book he's had a long grinding road back to health and fitness.  He's not quite ready to go back to playing the field but he is now ready to indulge in video games with his next door neighbor.  First he gets brained in the nuts by a young ninja warrior running down the hall in his apartment building and then his video game opponent has been replaced with a gorgeous woman and her young son.  Clearly Jensen is going to have to find a different game to play.
As it turns out Rowan is not interested in football players even though she's a career cheer leader whom Jensen has been oblivious to in the past even through to his chagrin all his siblings and cousins have definitely noticed her.  Given that they each definitely don't meet each other's dating criteria a friendship is born, one that surprisingly includes Rowan's son. Before long they are in and out of each other's apartments, sharing meals and other things.  Of course friendship soon goes out the door as sexual lust gets the better of Rowan and Jensen.
When the special summer camp that Rowan has enrolled her son in closes its doors suddenly, Jensen mobilizes the Lund Family Charity organization and his name to set up an alternative.  Jensen's mom adds a nice touch of humor with her deliberate misuse of grammar and words. It's great to get caught up with the doings of all the siblings who are now married, having babies and settling down in general as they all get involved in Jensen's new project.
Rowan is a character to admire. Left pregnant and abandoned by her high school boy friend she has done a great job of raising her son and making a career for herself.  For so long Rowan has focused all her energies on raising her son with blinkers on to the outside world. It's an interesting evolution for her as she deals with a relationship with Jensen and sets up an innovative approach to childcare and date nights for the entire apartment complex.
This is a feel good book where both characters demonstrate a lot of growth in the relationship arena.  The author leaves us a bread trail featuring the seemingly unattached Lund cousins which should give rise to many more heartwarming tales in this series to come.  A great series that I highly recommend to readers of contemporary romance fiction.

Love this series and this book! James does a fabulous job of writing in depth characters that sizzle! I need to go find my own Lund to contend with!

The Rocket has rules for dating but when he meets his neighbor's sister, everything changes. First friends and then more, these two bring fire to the table as they figure out life, love, and family.

As a popular football player, Jensen has enjoyed his celebrity for years but when he meets Rowan he realizes that he's been missing something. Rowan is a single mom working hard to take care of her six year old son. She's been a cheerleader in college and for the pro team Jensen plays for but she doesn't date athletes. She's been burned before when her son's father wanted nothing to do with him or her. Jensen has dating rules too but he breaks every one of them for Rowan. I really enjoyed this red hot, sweet, sports related romance!

The storyline isn't anything new but the way the author wrote the story was amazing!
I loved everything about Jenson and Rowan's romance. This friends to lovers, single mom, hot athlete, forbidden lovers romance is a great addition to the series.
It didn't contain unnecessary angst or made up drama just a well written story.
Jenson is my new book boyfriend. He's sweet , smart , cocky and sexy all rolled into one. Rowan is a devoted mother and career women whose had to do a lot on her own but realizes what she could be missing.
It part of a series but highly recommend reading it regardless if you read the others.

If I could give this book ten stars I would. It was so wonderful. I beyond LOVED the two main characters. THis is now my new favorite in the series. This book stars the youngest Lund son, Jensen and Marvin's sister, Rowan. Marvin was Axl's friend who he would hang out with and who Jensen became frinds with in the last book.

Jensen is 2 years into recovery from a sports injury and he has been away on vacation. When he comes home he goes over to his friend Marvin's house he instead meets Rowan, his sister and her son. They both really hit it off but they both have dating rules and decide that they cant break their rules so they become friends.

This was a fantastic story with two amazing leads. Jensen is mature and he really wants a relationship but in dating he won't date a woman with a child, a medical professional and a cheerleader and well Rowan is all three.Meanwhile Rowan is very anti dating a sport figure and with Jensen a football player , he breaks her one solid rule.

But they cannot stay away from the other and despite all the rules inthe world they have to decide whether love is worth the risk. Added to the risk, there is a non fraternization rule and they can lose their jobs if they date. So what happens? No spoliers here.

I will tell you this book was wonderful. Beyond great. I Loved the whole Lunda camp and how the entire family gets involved. I also loved seeing more of Jax, Lucy, Ash and the entire Lund family. This story was heartwarming and sweet and it can stand alone but you will want to read the whole series first because their are lots of Lunds throughout this story.

Full review to be published online in the late July review cycle.

WHEN I NEED YOU is the full bloom of the “Need You” series. The reader will love with this family; and I'd love for the series to continue, at least with a spin-off of the cousins.

Jensen and Rowan are a great match. They have some issues, mainly Rowan; but there is little angst in this book, which is refreshing for a New Adult offering. They are great as a couple, and Rowan’s son is adorable. Jensen spending time with him will melt the reader’s heart.

WHEN I NEED YOU is the fourth book in Lorelei James intriguing “Need You” series. As with all the books, this is a super sexy read; but you will have to be patient for a good portion of the book to get to the sexy times. The romance is a slow burn; but it fits the storyline well. WHEN I NEED YOU can be read standalone for plot purposes; but it should be noted that there is a good deal of interaction with previous book characters.
