This book was about Cammie, who is legally blind and forced to move in with her bootlegging aunt. Once enrolled in school, she meets a new friend and her life changes. The writing was so good that I could not put this down. I highly recommend it.

Cammie is an awesome character... her bootlegging aunt is a nightmare, the little twists and turns in here are so much fun to read.

Good historical fiction novel. A sad twist at the end.

Although I would classify this one more toward middle-grade than young adult, I enjoyed it. It had a familiar feel that echoed historical middle-grade novels from my childhood, and a convincing small-town atmosphere. I wish that the narrative had been a little kinder to fat people--fatness was often linked to an unpleasant personality, a regrettably pervasive tendency in children's fiction. The friendship between Cammie and Evelyn was sweet, though, and I was glad that the story ended with both children having found a more stable family life and hope for the future.

Cammie's vision is so bad she is legally blind living with her Aunt Millie who's a bootlegger. Her life starts to change once she goes to school and gets a best friend who she is not supposed to be with. Laura Best creates a vivid, interesting world full of memorable characters. I desperately wanted Cammie's life to improve and was always surprised by her actions.

She lives in a small town with a population. She struggles with learning to read and write.

As soon as Cammie learns about a school for the blind and the visually impaird in Halifax, she is sure that is where she needs to be.

Will Cammie get to go to the school for the blind and start building a life for herself?

Is her Father really dead, or has her aunt been lying to her about that?
