The second book in James' Dark Gifts series, after Gilded Cage, is more of the entertaining if slightly overwrought same. This one is even more no-holds-barred though, as the resistance ramps up, the ruling elite clamps down, and everyone gets into some murder and mayhem. This series is a little bit goofy but I still am excited to see where it goes next. B+.

Maintaining the momentum of the first episode in this series, James expands the story and develops a few new characters--can't wait for the next episode!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me a digital ARC of “Tarnished City” by Vic James. This book is the second in the book series by Vic James called “Dark Gifts”. This story is so original! It is a classic story about those with magic against those without but with a sinister twist. Those without magic must give ten years of servitude. This is similar to the “Harry Potter” magic system but with a bit of realism thrown in there. This second book keeps up the energy that began in the first book. The characters are well rounded and full of surprises. This series of perfect for fantasy lovers who want a well written political structure mixed in. Vic James has done it again! Two thumbs up!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC! I finished Gilded Cage the other day and was frustrated to wait until publication for the sequel. Thank goodness for NetGalley! Lots of action and suspense- I stayed up way too late reading. Although, now I have to wait again for the third book! Argh! I love the premise of this series- there are the "Skilled" who have magic and rule over the "non-Skilled" who must serve 10 years as a slave during their lifetime. Many moral and ethical questions for those in power and for those fighting for freedom. Plus, I love the fantasy aspect!

So twisty and good! I read it in about two days, and now I have to wait again for the next book! Definitely read the first if you haven't yet and then get this when it comes out!
