I LOVED this one! It hooked me right from the beginning and had a hold of me until the end. I didn't want to finish because I didn't want the story to end. It has left me wanting the next book in the series. I really liked Dorothea. I could relate to her a lot. She could have been kicked down by all the she's been through, but she has a inner strength that's inspiring. Daniel is been the one who Dorothea always wanted, but never had. Now back in town Daniel's will finally open when it comes to Dorothea, but he doesn't do relationships. This book had me laughing, crying, and down right mad. It's a well written story with well developed engaging characters. The last scene is quite memorable and just so perfect to end this book on. I can't say enough how much I recommend giving this one a read.

This is my first book in The Original Heartbreakers Series - it was real easy to read as a standalone, but I will definitely go back and read the rest of the series after reading this one!!

Dorothea was bullied at school, only having 2 real friends who for the last year were homeschooled, leaving Dottie alone. Her schoolgirl crush on Daniel Porter did a double take on one day, as he stood up for her against the bullies and then broke her heart later on in the day without even realising. Years later and Dottie now runs the local hotel after being given it by her mum. Its not what she wanted to do with her life, but is trying to make it work, and has ideas to change the hotel, which requires money! Dottie has real bad self esteem from the bullying and just about everyone else around her that is supposed to care for her has just about let her down. She had a bad marriage, putting him first and suffering a terrible loss, but she's back in her hometown trying to make things work.

Daniel and his 2 friends are back in Strawberry Valley after serving several tours in the Army. He has seen and done things no man should do and suffers from PTSD. He is here to look after his dad, who wants nothing more for his son to settle down. But Daniel is broken and knows this can never happen, his answer is to work his way through a horde of women to take his mind of it, usually staying at the hotel. Dottie has seen his coming and going with the women at her hotel, but his has not reduced her crush and still feels drawn to him. She decides to brave it and go to his room one night for just one night of passion, to maybe get him out of her system. But things don't quite turn out as she thought.

Both Dottie and Daniel are broken in their own ways, and have suffered a lot. They have a lot to get through and a lot of battles ahead of them.

This was a great read!! I loved this story, what a fab mix of romance, heartbreak, loss, tragedy, with laugh out loud moments mixed with sweet and sexy times!! The chemistry between these two is just wow - and I loved watching the relationship progress, even though this was a slow burn process! Some excellent side characters also that I can't wait to read more about. A highly recommended read!!

This beautiful story brought out all the feels! In her flawless style, Gena Showalter has delivered a cast of relatable characters in a delightful romance that was perfect of sweetness and sexiness. This story of growing beyond your past and allowing yourself to be loved was compelling and pulled me in from the very first page. It was heartwarming and emotional with some perfectly blended funny moments.

Dorothea Mathis has always felt like the ugly duckling, she was bullied in high school and felt self-conscious. It didn’t help that her unrequited childhood crush, Daniel Porter, broke her heart. He was a good person, though, he felt sorry for her and tried to comfort her. Finally, Dorothea decided to move on and to stop pining away for someone who apparently didn’t want her. Life happened, Dorothea got married and divorced, Daniel joined the army, serving multiple tours of duty. Several years later, they are both back in their hometown. The dynamic between them has changed. Dorothea has been hurt many times and wants to be respected. She has struggled with self-esteem problems all her life, but she is stronger and is ready for a different life.

Daniel is haunted by the horrors of the war he went through. His attraction to Dorothea shocks him, he isn’t psychologically ready for a relationship, but he can’t stay from her. Although he wants to protect her from his demons, his affection for her has the power to overshadow his memories and to chase away his darkness. Neither one of them expects the connection between them to be so strong. But Dorothea refuses to trust Daniel with her heart. Understandably, she wants their relationship to be on her terms.

Their game of cat and mouse was delightful! Daniel is persistent and Dorothea can’t resist his tenderness and the deep emotions he awakens. Gena Showalter does an incredible job, in my opinion, of laying out in great detail the thoughts and feelings that Dorothea has had for a very long time. I loved that they both discovered how to grow on their own and how to grow with each other as a couple.

I really enjoyed this swoony and heartfelt romance. It was fast-paced, intense at times, with a very addictive storyline and a perfect ending. This book is a standalone, part of the Original Heartbreaker series. 4.5 Stars

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a curvy girl myself I understand the insecurities that Thea has. I love how every chance he gets Daniel reiterates how beautiful she is. He’s the type of man you want. The kind that rises you up instead of puts you down.

The story pulled me in with a slow sweet burn. It was fun and flirty with a little mix of angst. You’ll laugh and might even cry but in the end your heart will be full of happiness.

This can definitely be read as a stand-alone as this was my first book in the series. But I know I won’t want to miss anymore.

It has been ages since I've read a Gena Showalter book, so when I got the opportunity to read Can't Hardly Breathe, I was totally in.

The premise of the book was fairly interesting. Both Thea and Daniel had difficult lives, both are scarred and the consequences of this can be seen in their everyday life and behaviour.
Thea, the female main character, was really well developed, we get many informations about what happened to her and what drives her actions, but I had some issues with the rest of the characters.

First of all, Daniel was kind of a douchebag who needed a whole new book just to redeem himself, I felt like some things could have been better developed. I think that Daniel lacked of depth, and even though there were full chapters narrated from his point view, there was something missing.

I had some problems also with their friends. I couldn't tell apart Thea's ones, and I felt like both Brock and Jude, Daniel's best friends, where puppets under Daniel shadows. I really want to read the next two books to see if my opinion will change.

The story itself was enjoyable and interesting to keep my attention going till the end of the book. Unfortunately I didn't read the previous books of this series, but I would have liked to read them to get a wider view, because some characters who appear in this book were the protagonists of the previous ones.

All in all, I had a good time reading it, but as previously said, some things made it difficult for me to fully appreciate and love the story.

I was excited to hear that this series was getting three more books! Neddless to say that Dorothea's story was one of my favorites, even more than the three previous books.
It's a story about bullying, family problems and how a woman's resolve to help her family makes her stronger. I liked Daniel as the male protagonist. He and his friends have lots to deal with (PTSD mostly) andaround Dorothea he softens and becomes the boy Dorothea had fallen in love with.

The cameos of previous characters were a nice touch too! And obviously I am excited to read about Jude and Ryanne on the next book too!

This book had a tone I wasn’t expecting, and was so much more than I thought it would be. As a small town romance, it hits the right marks. The cost of gossip, the way everyone looks out for Dorothea even when she doesn’t want them to, and the darkness behind the light in the sense of secrets where people think everything is known are all there.

It doesn’t hold back in the slightest, not just with Dorothea, but also with her friends. These are real people facing real things that are far more immediate than the bullying mentioned in the book description, though the impact of that lingers both in the story and in real life.

Dorothea isn’t alone in her shadows, either. Daniel might have been the handsome hero of an army ranger, but he battles demons every bit as dark as those that haunt Dorothea. PTSD, or post-traumatic stress syndrome, is something heroes aren’t supposed to suffer, but of course, they do. Daniel chooses not to care about anything as his way of protecting himself, and those he is willing to love, from future pain.

They are each strong in their own way, but Dorothea takes the prize. She’s determined to rebuild herself while those around her tear her down in the name of helping her. She had goals and dreams she’s finding a way to pursue, and even though her love is rarely returned in any tangible way, she does whatever she can to protect those she loves from harm.

This book is about good people who have suffered horrible things and have to fight not just for themselves, but for each other. It’s powerful, and when it could have had an easy ending, instead, it rips apart in favor of the ending that’s worth the struggle.

This isn’t a story about perfect people. It isn’t even a story about oddball outsider kids who grew up into perfect people. It’s about people often dismissed or misunderstood by those around them finding the one person who can heal their hurts and let them embrace the world they’ve been sheltering from. It’s not easy, it’s not without heartbreak (and tears on the part of this reader), but it shows that the right person is worth fighting for, even when the right person is yourself.

If you prefer your encounters safely behind closed doors, this isn’t the book for you. The sex is described right there in front of everything, but it is both so much more than those scenes and makes those scenes a tangible part of the story. This is especially true for Daniel who had buried his fears in random encounters (all prior to the book starting) without understanding just what a real connection is. Dorothea is not exempt either, though, because her self-esteem issues are such that she doesn’t think anyone will want her.

P.S. I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review, and honestly, I loved it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the previous books in this series and was very excited to see there’s going to be at least three more!

Dorothea Mathis was bullied in her small town high school for being the red headed, freckled, curvy girl. Her two best friends sheltered her as best they could for the first two years but she was on her own when they were home schooled the last two years. She left town for college and a fresh start. A college drop out and failed marriage later, she returns home to run the family Inn and reconnect with her irritating, mouthy, belligerent, snarky, ill-tempered teenage sister. The last person she expects to run into is her high school crush, Daniel Porter, who is using the Inn for his string of one-night stands.

Daniel left for the military right after graduation and never looked back. He’s only home now to look after his ailing father. He’s returned with his two best friends, also former military, and started a security company. All three are struggling to adjust to civilian life for multiple reasons. Daniel has PTSD and loss issues. He is alpha, protective, caring and a leader.
He remembers Dorothea and has no idea she crushed on him for years and the effect his kindness had on her.

Not surprisingly, Dorothea has self-esteem and body image issues. However, she is also quirky, intelligent, funny and increasingly found the backbone and inner strength that she never realized she had. She makes Daniel work for what he wants.

Daniel and Dorothea have great chemistry. I loved that Daniel didn’t just tell Dorothea that he cared about her, he put his words into actions. Loved the negotiations between these two. These two help heal each other by giving each other strength, support and encouragement, not just lip service. And it’s not just sappy crap. These are relatable characters with real life issues.

While we see past characters, you can read this as a standalone. I look forward to Jude and Brock’s stories and recommend the previous books in the series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley and the publisher.

Daniel Porter, Strawberry Valley’s own hometown hero, has come home with his two best friends to take care of his dad and start their security business. A lone wolf whose time in the Army changed him dramatically, Daniel spends his days working and his nights at the local bed and breakfast trying to outrun his nightmares with multiple women.

Dorothea (Thea) Mathis left Strawberry Valley after a lifetime of bullying to follow her dreams of becoming a meteorologist. Years later she returns divorced and disillusioned. Older and wiser, Thea has vowed to never let anyone treat her poorly again. She is back and has big plans for her family’s inn and the gorgeous and complicated Daniel Porter isn’t part of them.

Daniel can’t believe how sexy Thea has become and wants a chance to catch up on some old times with her…preferably in bed…but his past has him fearing the future with anyone. As Daniel and Thea grow closer, Daniel finds himself unable to breathe when she is around, desperate to keep her in his life forever. But he can’t get past his fear of the future, he will lose his present with her.

Even though the three Original Heartbreakers have found their happily ever afters, Showalter continues the series with another trio of sexy and wounded bad boys whose friendship was forged by war, horned in battle. Showalter’s trademark humor, passion, and outrageousness are in evidence as she builds a charming but predictable romance that deals with love, loss, family, redemption, and forgiveness.

“Tell Dorothea I said hi. Maybe give her a kiss from me. Use tongue. I would.”

Beginning in the past, the story opens up in high school where we see the then town bully, Harlow Glass from The Hotter You Burn, attack Thea. Daniel steps in to defend her and Thea is over the moon. She imagines Daniel’s attention being more romantic in nature until she catches him with one of Harlow’s minions. Thea’s hearts breaks a little as she realizes that she will never be the type to catch and hold the attention of someone like Daniel Porter. We then jump forward to the present and Thea is cleaning up after yet another one of Daniel’s sexathons. Angry she has to clean up after him and that he’s having sex and she’s not leads to a humorous confrontation that introduces the explosive chemistry that has always simmered between this couple.

“Bad weather will hit in an hour or two. Go home, Daniel. I’m tripling the room rates tonight.”

“Does triple rate come with cuddle time?”

“No cuddles, but I can make sure your stay comes with a knee-to-crutch introduction.”

“Yeah, baby. Talk dirty to me.”

This couple clicks and all you can only hold on for what looks to be an emotional and amusing ride as they both struggle to come to deal with their personal issues in order to move forward. The romance is definitely slow to develop and move through the sexual tension and angst keeps you firmly engaged.

‘It had been one tragedy after another for this precious woman, one rejection after another, and yet she’d never waved the white flag. That was courage. She possessed a soul-deep strength and a purity of character few others did, both of which mattered far more than outward beauty ever would. Even an outward beauty as magnificent as hers.’

Multiple plotlines flow through the book as Showalter expertly manipulates and explores them as she peels back the layers of Thea and Daniel and guides them gently in the direction she wants to go without making it to obvious. I enjoyed the strong communication skills employed by Thea and Daniel. No game playing here, they know want from one another and they communicate it well, though their ability to get it is another story. Both have terrible trust issues that color their perception of things to create confusion and melodrama.

“ I’m worth everything because that’s what I’m willing to give.”

Plenty of laughs can be laid at the feet of the rambunctious and well-known residents who pop in and out with advice, admonishments, and general craziness. We meet Daniel’s best friends-Jude and Brock-who tries to help Daniel despite trying to handle some pretty serious issues of their own. Their possible loves interests look to be some interesting match ups.

“Your hospitality sucked.”

“I’ll be sure to mention my raging guilt in my diary.”

I enjoyed meeting Thea’s younger sister whose own insecurities creates even more drama and Jessie Kay continues to reign supreme as the town smart-arse. Virgil, Daniel’s dad, is an utter delight and offers some dad-isms when needed.

“Don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining, boy.”

While the Original Heartbreakers series continues to entertain (Showalter is definitely a talented writer) I was disappointed to see the recycling of storylines and lack of imagination with character names (Jase/Jude-Beck/Brock). At times I felt like I was reading a mash up of books one and two with just the names changed. Regardless, I am interested in seeing how she handles the couple in book five-Can’t Let Go-set to release Oct 31, 2017. A bartender and a wounded warrior whose family was killed by a drunk driver? D.R.A.M.A.

Once again I'm jumping into the middle of a series. In my defense, I actually own the previous books in the series. In paper, no less. Actually reading them is another thing ;) Thankfully, I had no problem catching on to who is who and what has happened in the past.

So, Dorothea has crushed on Daniel since high school. She was picked on and ignored and her ex husband cheating on her hadn't helped her self esteem. But she's decided to change. I'll be honest and say that some of her internal pep talking git on my nerves at first. But I quickly fell for her and cheered her on when she wouldn't accept Daniel's suggestion that they hide their relationship. She grew and changed and I was so stinking proud of her for standing her ground.

Now, as for Daniel. I didn't care for him. The first part of the story he was so...I don't know. Cocky, maybe? He wanted Thea, but didn't want anyone to know and he wouldn't accept her answer of no. He just rubbed me the wrong way. Then, at about the 55-60% mark, I liked him. He was treating The a with respect and then he ended up in the dog house again with his reactions and ultimatum. He did grovel well though.

I did like this enough to go back and read the first books and to continue with the ones coming up. Jude's story will be so angsty good - I just know!

4.5 I laughed so hard throughout this book! The things that Dorothea would say made me giggle and I loved it.

Daniel has come home and Dorothea tries not to see him as everything she ever wanted. She fails. They both have secrets and insecurities.

He doesn't want to get his dad's hopes up because his dad wants him happy and married. Dorothea hasn't been first in a guys life before and she's not going to be a secret. She's going to make Daniel work for a relationship and she does it beautifully. She's not asking for anything crazy, she holds her ground and prays that Daniel sees the light.

I loved that Dorothea wasn't a size 0 and Daniel didn't bat an eye, he saw her and he wanted her. Oh how he wanted.

I wanted to smack the crap out of her sister for the longest time but by the end I just wanted to hug her.

Can't Hardly Breathe is the 4th book in the The Original Heartbreakers series. It is definitely a welcome addition to the series. This book focuses on Dorothea and Daniel. She was the one who Harlow worked for at the inn in the send book. Dorothea was bullied all through high school. She has also had a crush on Daniel since they were little. Daniel has moved back home to take care of his father. He isn't looking for commitment, but Dorothea is tempting.

I enjoyed this one. Although, I will warn you it is filled with a bit of angst. I felt so bad for Thea. She just couldn't seem to catch a break for most of her life. She was always playing second to everyone else. I loved Daniel and Thea together. Their banter was fun. Their negotiations were hilarious. I was really rooting for them. I was so hoping Daniel would finally stop being a butthead and quit letting fear of the future hold him back from loving someone. In addition to her relationship with Daniel, I was really pulling for her to work things out with her sister Holly.

I definitely recommend this one. It has great characters and some laugh out loud moments. I am looking forward to Ryanne and Jude's story next! -Kari

Can’t Hardly Breathe is the fourth book in The Original Heartbreakers series. It is only the second one that I have read, but I didn’t read the novel that comes right before this, so it can be enjoyed as a complete standalone. I thought it was a very entertaining and heart-warming read, the ending leaving me all warm and fuzzy inside.

The main characters, Dorothea (Thea) and Daniel, had each experienced their fair share of pain and tragedy. Thea, now divorced, ran the local Inn, having taken over from her mother. Daniel, whom Thea had a thing for since middle-school, had returned to town to care for his father but was also having troubles of his own, dealing with PTSD.

Daniel wanted Thea almost immediately, and he was determined to have her. Thea, although she had wanted Daniel for as long as she could remember, just wasn’t ready to open herself up to him. But Daniel wouldn’t let up and eventually Thea agreed to a few dates with him.

The negotiations between those two had me chuckling to myself and the banter between them was non-stop. They had great chemistry, I loved how well they fit together! Their relationship was a slow-burning one, but I enjoyed every minute. We got to see Thea develop into a more confident woman, finally acknowledging her worth and how Daniel began developing real feelings for her, even if he wouldn’t/couldn’t admit it to himself or anyone else for a long time. They really helped each other to grow and heal and it was a beauty to see.

Can’t Hardly Breathe is a quick read. It’s a sweet and satisfying romance, and a fine addition to the series.

Can't Hardly Breathe by Gena Showalter is the fourth installment in The Original Heartbreakers Series.
Every book is about another couple and can easily be read as a standalone.
This is Dorothea and Daniel's book.
Dorothea Mathis' life sucks. She's a shy wallflower, insecure with low self-esteem. All she does is working, working and more working at the family's Inn. She's stuck.
And then is there Daniel Porter, a ex-military and now security expert. She had a crush on him for forever.
Now he wants her too. Botgh have a long way to go 'til they are abje to get theirn HEA.
This book has everything in it that I love. Great writing, characters whose feelings I could feel in the words, and a beautiful story.
I give 4,5 stars and say Thank you, Gena Showalter !

I have recently become a huge fan of Gena Showalter. Ever since I discovered her books I’ve been hooked. Her writing is phenomenal and just beyond amazing. Few authors compare.

I loved Dorthea. She had a bit of a self-esteem issue when she was younger and it carried over into her adult life. Despite all the bullying and moments that pushed her down Dorthea continued to come back at life swinging and with a positive attitude. I just loved her. She’s so good and honest. I loved that even while she liked Daniel and had some mega feelings for him, she didn’t settle for less than what she wanted. She wanted a happily ever after and a family. When Daniel didn’t offer that to her she walked away. Honestly Dorthea was amazing.

Daniel was cute and I loved him as the male lead. First off he introduced some characters with whom I cannot wait until they get their happily ever after. Second I loved how usually we get books where most of the time I feel it’s the female lead who does the most growing and the guy is waiting patiently until their woman can see what a beautiful person they are. This story is not like that. Daniel did a lot of growing if not more than Dorthea. Daniel didn’t want to settle down, and yet didn’t understand why this wasn’t acceptable for Dorthea. Despite all that he was a sweet character who just went above and beyond to support Dorthea no matter what.

This whole story was amazing. While the length of the book may seem long it didn’t feel that way. I honestly read this book in one or two sittings. Two possibly since I started work and I’m waking up at 5 am. Anyway, this book was amazing. Nothing dragged, nothing seemed too convenient, and the story felt real. The romance was beyond hot, but the story was a story and not just a hot and steamy romance. Definitely add this book to your shelf.

Gena Showalter is the queen of fun contemporary romances for me. This series is an all time favorite. I am not typically a fan of stories written in third person but Gena's writing is so amazing I don't mind it al all. Dorothea and Daniel's story is sweet and fun. The two had a rough beginning with Daniel using her inn for his hookups and Dorothea not over their past with her idolizing him in school and her being bullied by the other "popular" kids.

Now she is older and running her family inn. This book is almost as much about her coming into her own as it is about Daniel realizing that she is the best thing that could happen to him. Daniel had me falling for his sweet moments and the book was so full of hilarity (as all the books in this series are) that I could not stop reading for anything.

Gena is a master of words and each book of hers I read cement her in one of my top author spots.

Can't Hardly Breathe (The Original Heartbreakers, #4) by Gena Showalter. I'm sure there is a sign somewhere that reads: "Welcome to Strawberry Valley, where romance happens." This is a contemporary second chance romance that can be read as a stand alone. A heartwarming underdog story in which Dorthea embraces the strength of her character with high school crush Daniel Porter turned romantic interest years later. I completely adore the interaction between these two characters which makes this book a fun and fluid read. Secondary characters bring added drama and anticipation as well. This is the first contemporary romance I've read by this author, and it definitely shows her versatility. I also recommend The Lords of the Underworld Series if paranormal is more your thing. At any rate, this is a great series that will leave you smiling.

Bullying can have a long lasting impact, even more so than a kind word. What happens here in Strawberry Valley is a classic example!

Dorothea is the owner of Strawberry Inn. Having been bullied at school and after a cheating ex husband, she struggles with self confidence. She lives with her mother and a rebellious sister.

Daniel has returned to Strawberry Valley to look after his father. He is exforces and owns a security business with his two best friends, Jude and Brock. He doesn't believe in permanent relationships.

Daniel is a frequent patron of the Strawberry Inn, where he usually brings his flings. Dorothea has been crushing on him for as long as she can remember. She is convinced that she is not his type, whereas he is attracted to her. They have one thing in common. Fear! She has a fear of rejection. He has a fear of loss. His post traumatic stress disorder doesn't help.

Dorothea makes an attempt at seduction! Daniel is lost for words, and of course, she takes it as a rejection. He, on the other hand is unable to get her off his mind. When they eventually get together, it's electrifying but, the battle with their fear gets in the way. As they get to know each other, they uncover the depth of their traumatic experiences. Their biggest barrier for having a healthy relationship. Can they overcome their fear and trust each other?

I was hooked on this story from page one. Daniel and Dorothea are complex, but lovable characters. They are loyal and love relentlessly. This novel had me laughing out loud one minute and sniffling the next. It's an addictive and compelling read which had my emotions in tatters. I absolutely loved it and look forward to Jude's and Ryanne's story.

I was kindly issued with an eARC from the publisher via NetGalley and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

I have read many of Ms. Showalter's books and enjoyed them. This one not so much. After reading the prolong I went and researched if perhaps this was a young adult - no. But it really reads to me like a new adult. The female lead - Dorothea is very insecure and seems quite young to me. I really don't want to read an adult romance where one of the leads seems like she is emotionally an adolescent.

Daniel- the male lead, I did not like him either. Man-slut comes to mind. I truly need to find some redeeming quality to the leads in a story to keep reading it. Was the plot good, I really don't know. I gave up on the book less than half-way in. The unlikability of the lead characters kept my focus at all times, and the rest of the story just faded away.

Received as an ARC from Netgalley for an honest review.

Can’t Hardly Breathe is an uproariously funny, insightful and sexy romance with a lot of heart. Dorothea Mathis was bullied as a teenager in Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, and her heart was unintentionally shattered by her longtime crush, Daniel Porter. After moving away to attend college, she’s back in Strawberry Valley, divorced and managing her family’s inn. Daniel is also back in town after spending years in the Army, but he’s struggling to adapt to civilian life and plagued with troubling memories of war.

Daniel and Dorothea see each other again and sparks fly. She’s hesitant to get involved with him, but neither can deny their palpable sexual chemistry. He seeks to tempt her by throwing her off kilter at every opportunity, and he is utterly charming in his pursuit. They share flirty banter and have a dynamic repartee, and their delightful push and pull slowly draws them together. But both are dealing with personal demons that threaten their growing feelings. I fell in love with Dorothea’s sass and resilience and Daniel’s charisma and complexity, and I found myself rooting for their happily-ever-after. Gena Showalter’s Can’t Hardly Breathe is an outstanding small town romance with memorable characters and an engaging story that should not be missed.
