A very well written book. I enjoyed the plot and characters. I thoroughly enjoy this author's work and this book did not disappoint.

Very enjoyable conclusion to a great series. I enjoyed the historical story of the Civil War nurses and the work they did. The contemporary story with the therapy horses and addiction rang true with today's world. The connection between generations of stories came together in this conclusion. Recommend!

This was an interesting conclusion to the series as it tied up all the loose ends. The story was a bit unbalanced in my opinion as I really enjoyed Therese's story more than Nicole's. The romantic aspect of Nicole's life seemed almost non existent and them bam, it was suddenly, inexplicably full on. It was good to finally understand the end of the mystery that was introduced in the beginning. A solid four stars!

I used to love Mindy Starns Clark, and then she fell off the radar for a bit. She's back with a wonderful mystery - actually, it's two mysteries that are intertwined through two different historical settings. The narration jumps back and forth, but it's not difficult to follow. You'll think you have the answer, but you won't! Plus, there's some great Civil War knowledge and history thrown into the mix. Glad to see another read from her!

When I selected this book to read, I thought the premise of it sounded interesting. The story starts off with Nicole, who is returning home from college. Previously she had been in treatment for an addiction and injury, but having not read the previous books (didn't realize this was the third in a series) I was a bit confused as to what was going on. Fortunately, the story didn't lose me as much as some other three part books.

The one thing I did like about the book, was how it was written. Initially that is. I liked the way how the author played with the words, because I wanted to read more and understand what was going on. But then I hit Therese, and hit a wall. I wanted to know about Nicole, not Therese. So I found myself fast forwarding through the book to get to the bits about Nicole and the drama going on within the family.

But then, the story just seemed to go on forever. And I wanted to just get to the meat of what was going on and how they were going to solve the issue. This is one time that I wished I had a hard copy book, because then it would have been so much easier to flip ahead, and then flip back a few pages. A kindle, isn't so kind in that aspect.

Essentially, there are two stories intermingled here. Nicole of present day and Therese of the civil war days. And they both are learning about themselves and learning how to love. I just couldn't figure out the purpose of the two stories, over than Therese's arrival while Nicole was looking at old photos. Great idea, but for me, I just didn't like it.

Nicole Talbot is doing so well in her post-addiction life. She has kept a secret since she was a little girl and feels that to totally heal she must let it out to the rest of the family. Nicole is working with horses at a therapy farm for the summer before she returns to school in the fall. She is worried about talking to the family but soon realizes she is not the only one with secrets.
Teresa Jennings, Nicole's great, great, great grandmother is so against slavery and is trying to convenience her mother to let the ones free the family has left. The Civil War is on an dher mother just can't seem to let go. Teresa gets a position in Richmond as a governess. Polly, her friend also has one and helps at the hospital when she can. Teresa also decides to help. Polly's brother & cousin are both interested in Teresa but she has loved Polly's brother most of her life and now she is not sure what to do. The mystery which is part of the present is also part of the past. A great read and a look at the Confederate side of the war.

As a history lover, I have enjoyed this series, from the Hugenot persecution, to early colonial America and now the Civil War. I also really liked the overarcing mystery of the cabin. That trauma has been carried throughout the series.
In this final installment, we get Nicole's recovery story and finally get resolution about the mystery. Historically, we see a glimpse of late Civil War Richmond, Va. Particularly, nursing, a spy ring, and the slavery dilemma.
Surprisingly for me, I enjoyed the present day storyline much more. We really make progress about the cabin mystery and get the answers. Seeing that unfold and understanding the depths of the trauma bring new understanding to Nicole's character.
The Civil War nurse theme has been done before, and quite frankly, done better. Two of my favorite series of all time have a book dedicated to that storyline.
However, overall this was a satisfying conclusion to the series. I do recommend reading the books in order to understand the present day storyline.
