There is no denying it, my fellow romance book-loving friends. Denying the Duke definitely got right down to the business of innocent, instant attraction and promise of future love. Alex and Patience certainly felt the same pull towards one another when they first met at age 16 and 20, but fate stepped in between these young lovebirds and required patience of another sort. This spare heir, turned soldier, then reluctant Duke seems doomed to keep making a royal mess of things. As far as marriage proposals go, he may know how to win a war, but winning the girl over was another matter. If I could have spoken directly to him I would have said, “Your love would have been enough, buddy. You’re not as broken as you think. Just go with it and be yourself.” Surprisingly, Patience began to try my patience quite a bit, especially near the conclusion of this romantic tale. Sure, she exhibited some backbone, but at times I questioned her timing. Some may consider her putting Alex through his paces as his due, but I found myself thinking she was getting in the way of her own happiness. Her overreaction towards what transpired near the end was somewhat frustrating. Again, this girl kept getting in the way of not just her happiness, but Alex’s, as well. I guess you could say it took both of them time to come to their senses, in one way or another. With writing that flowed, lots of intermittent relationship angst/uncertainty mingled with hopefulness/internal monologue, I patiently waited for this should have been together years ago couple to finally become husband and wife, in every sense of the word. I use the term patient since that doesn’t happen until about 70% into it. Some steamy scenes ensue that show they were perfect for each other, folks. Here’s to hoping my review has been helpful in deciding if this book and series is a good match for you. I have a feeling Lady Suzanna and one of Alex’s close compadre’s will take center stage in a future, yet to be announced sequel. Title: Denying the Duke, Series: Lords and Ladies in Love (Book 3), Author: Callie Hutton, Pages: 238, stand-alone but part of a series, instant attraction/love, some violence, shows some backbone, gets slapped alot, no rape, no love triangle, unwanted OM drama, four year separation, perilous situation, good guy w/PTSD hero, spousal abuse references, physically and mentally abusive father, thought she was married by now, some VERY steamy scenes, no specific OW drama. Book 1 - Seducing the Marquess (Richard & Eugenia), 10/17/16, Pages: 250 Book 2 - Marrying the Wrong Earl (Arabella & Nash), 4/17/17, Pages: 242 Book 3 - Denying the Duke (Alex & Patience), 7/10/17, Pages: 238 (This review is based on an advanced reader copy distributed via NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. Misinterpreted love Patience suffered! Suffered a lost love, suffered an unenviable betrothal to a man who preferred courtesans, suffered a brutish father and then had to suffer marriage to a man who didn't give her choices. As she considers her situation she realizes her whole life has been one of no choice! What Patience wants is to be courted! Is that too much to ask? Alex, bemused and frankly out of touch, as he is fresh from six years as a soldier, firstly at Waterloo and later working with the war office. His latest assignment was to bring home a traitor--Lord Loverly. It was on the voyage home that Alex discovered his brother had died in highly salacious circumstance. Alex was now the Duke-a Duke with many problems. How to confront his situation and his brother's wife, Alex's youthful love. Added to that is the news that Loverly has escaped. He is now a threat to Alex's person and also Patience's. Which all means that the situation is ripe for misinterpretation and bungled communication between Alex and Patience. I was intrigued by the couple of mentions of Loverly's daughter who has disappeared. Are we going to come across her in the future? Mmm! Frankly there were times when I was just plain annoyed with the two central characters. It feels that denial works both ways. Alex really wants to deny the dukedom but just plain can't and Patience wants to deny Alex if he can't treat her in the way she wants, which she finds hard to give voice to. Alex was the ‘spare’ son, second in line to his family’s Dukedom, looked over by society and his family, tormented by his bully of an older brother, Cyrus, they could not be more chalk and cheese. Just as disheartening as his brother, were his parents. Cold and distant, they spared no time for the second son, and no affection either. All in all his home life was pretty miserable. A glimmer of hope for future happiness though appeared when Patience and her family came to visit. He and Patience shared an immediate connection, gravitating towards each other, spending all their time together. Even though it was a whirlwind romance, they declared their love and pledged to wait for each other till Patience was older and Alex was settled in a career. Fate, however, stepped in and Patience found herself being betrothed to cruel Cyrus. Devastated, Patience resisted, but the handshake agreement was done and dusted, her father leaving her in no uncertain terms what her fate would be if she refused. Right here I should give a trigger warning. The treatment Patience receives at the all too often harsh hand of her father is distressing but it is an integral part of her character growth and inner strength. Unable to accept that his future had been ripped out of his hands and heart, Alex flees the family estate and purchases a commission in the military, knowing that there is no way he can stop the marriage between Cyrus and Patience without scandalous consequences. Over the next four years he endeavours to forget Patience, dedicating himself to serving his country and putting as much distance, physically and mentally between his memories and his present moment. Oh how I felt for Patience and Alex. Their story was heartbreaking. The abuse that Patience suffered at the hand of her father, the cruel twist of fate when she was betrothed to the Cyrus, and the persistent years of bullying and abuse at the hand of both her father and Cyrus till Alex’s return, just cemented how resilient and strong Patience was. She withstood four years of coercion to become Cyrus’ wife, and it was only after his death that she had found a reprieve. Returning to assume his role as the new Duke of Travistock, to say Alex is shocked to discover that his brother and Patience never married, would be an understatement. As he discovers just what Patience has suffered, anger slices through him, and regret and pain wash over him that he was not there to protect her and save her from it all. Alex was still deeply in love with Patience, but he was a changed man, suffering from the effects of war, the bloody images invading his nightmares and convincing him that he could not possibly allow Patience to be subjected to his PTSD ongoing, that she deserved better. When her father tries to bully him into marrying Patience he pushes back, but when Alex realises he will just sell her off to the highest bidder, Alex does the honourable thing and steps in and offers her marriage. What he didn’t count on was Patience’s initial resistance to his idea and her reasons for that. Her independence borne out of years of having to stand up for herself, her safety and wellbeing, her years of abuse and bullying making her more determined to live her life on her own terms. She didn’t want Alex to feel indebted to her, she wanted him to love her, and, as she sees more of war-hardened Alex, she is not sure that he does. Both of these characters had suffered mentally and physically since their first innocent kiss, both searching for some peace and to put the bad memories of the last four years to rest. I admired Patience’s tenacity and determination to marry on her own terms. She wanted Alex but she needed him all in, fully committed to their relationship. She also had to come to terms with her feelings about the man that had returned from war. Could she give him what he now needed, could she love him with all his scars? Of course she could, and her perceptiveness regarding helping Alex heal, solidified by respect for her. She knew when to push and when to pull back, giving him the space he needed to come to his own realisations about them and their future while being steadfast about her own needs. Throwing down the challenge to Alex that to win her completely he must court her and give her the experiences she had been denied, we see the playful side come out in both of these characters and these scenes lightened the heavy mood. Alex has had a lot thrust upon him in a short time, learning of his brother’s death, assuming Ducal responsibilities that he was totally unprepared for, dealing with PTSD and accepting how deep his love for Patience still is. Just when he feels like he is finding his peace, his past comes back to haunt him and threatens the life they are building. I liked the way this suspenseful twist was written in to further showcase the characters growth and personalities. Their base lack of total trust in each other fed this angst and was the turning point in them fully surrendering to each other and their future together. It was heartwarming to see them find strength in each other, and in turn, enabling their healing on a more profound level, their deep-seated passion making their connection absolute. I really enjoyed this, the third book in the Lords and Ladies in Love series, and even though I have not read book 1 and 2, this can be read as a standalone but, going by this authors writing, I will definitely be going back and catching up. |
Four years ago Alex was a second son, ignored by his parents and bullied by his older brother. Meeting the 16 year old Lady Patience, Alex feels seen for the first time. Patience has seen how miserable her mother is in marriage and hopes for better things- things she thinks she has found in Alex. But when their fathers announce her betrothal to Alex's elder brother Cyrus, their young plans fall apart. Alex leaves home, joins the military, and doesn't come back until he is summoned four years later. Both his father and brother are dead and he is now the Duke of Bedford. To his surprise, Patience had not yet married Cyrus. But four years can change people, and neither are who they once were, Can they find their way back to love, or has their chance passed forever? Although I'm not generally a fan of second-chance romance, the idea for this book really intrigued me. What if the second chance was not because the two lovers messed up and drove each other apart, but because their parents did? How could you overcome the obstacles caused by others to reach a happily-ever-after? Unfortunately, Denying the Duke didn't deliver good answers for me. Most of my problem was with Alex. The ignored second son who goes off to war and comes back a changed and hardened man. So far so good, that's all believable and makes for good character building. He's bitter towards his whole family, partly for how they always treated him and partly for engaging his older brother to the girl he's falling in love with. I might point out that he could have tried to fight for her, but he was young, so I'm still ok with him. Then he returns home and he loses me. He ignores Patience at Cyrus' funeral, thinking she's his brother's widow, then finds out from friends that she hadn't married Cyrus. Patience's title-hungry father immediately suggests Alex marry Patience. Alex goes from complete refusal to thinking maybe it would be convenient to marry her so he doesn't have to search the Marriage Mart for a wife. He's in lust with her but, rather like his behavior at the funeral, he rarely tries to see Patience or who she is now. Until he completely messes up a 'proposal' and she refuses, then she's a challenge. Even after they get married and start getting to know each other, he refuses to explain himself, his actions, or share anything with her- while expecting her to do all of that with him. I liked Patience- she had a miserable home life with a bullying and abusive father (then add on a fiancé who was even worse) and spent most of her life not being consulted about any aspect of her life. By the time she and Alex meet again she has managed to hold on to a kind and generous spirit, but she's also sick of being bullied by men and wants to have her own say in her life. She doesn't actually figure out how to do that until she's married to Alex. Then she decides she deserves courting and tells Alex she won't go to bed with him until he's wooed her and they are friends again. Alex does agree she deserves some romance, but works to seduce her at the same time. Just when you think there's a chance they can get things right, a traitor from the past starts stalking them. Alex knows the villain will probably try to get to him through his wife, so he and his friends make sure she's never out of sight. The one thing they don't do to protect her is to tell Patience what's happening. I was willing to look past Alex's past jerky behavior once he and Patience started finding their footing and it was clear he was somewhat willing to try and be a good husband, but this blew it for me. Patience figures out pretty fast that she's being watched every second and when Alex won't explain why what is she to think but that he doesn't trust her? There were plenty of things where a deeper exploration could have improved the plot and the characters. I would have loved to see more between Alex and his family. Was Alex, the intelligent, serious, polite and kind son, very unlike his father and that was why they couldn't get along? The glimpses you get of Cyrus, even at a young age, certainly suggest he wasn't going to be a good duke- so why didn't their parents train Alex to handle estate affairs for his brother? Were his parents literally so stupid and shallow that they only preferred the older brother because he was the heir by accident of birth and ignored Alex until he was the Duke? Did his mother care for nothing but the title, not the man who held it, as Alex asks at one point? When we discover the blackmail Patience's father held over the old duke, there's plenty of room to find out more about the duke, as well as Patience's mother. But we only get glimpses. We get glimpses of some of Alex's time at war that could help explain why he does some things, and it could have been expanded to better cover why he doesn't tell Patience about the danger she's in. But we are left unsatisfied with what we get, and my impression of Alex suffers as a result. I think one of my big problems with Denying the Duke (besides a completely unlikable make lead) was that it tried to be too many things at once, and so things that could have been explored and made for deeper characters were dropped. Is this a second-chance romance, a marriage of convenience trope, the redemption of a man haunted by war, a woman finding herself, a spy thriller? Most books can pull off two or even three of these in the same storyline. A rare few can possibly put them all together into a compelling, deep, and enjoyable storyline, full of engaging characters you like or come to like and cheer towards a happy ending. Denying the Duke manages to be none of the above, and a rather disappointing read. |

This book started off with such a romantic but heartbreaking story that I had really high hopes for the book. I really liked the way both characters were written in the beginning of the book. Once Alex came back as the Duke, I really didn't like Patience's character. She became annoying, immature and whining even as she was asking to be treated as an adult and an equal. The character was irrational and hysterical towards the end of the book. I really wanted to like this book but the story just kept going down the hill after the first half of the book. This is book number three in "Lords and Ladies in love" series * I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review* |
This is an interesting story of finding love with the same person for the second time. There are elements to this story that made me fall in love with it, and elements of it that made me fall a little out of love with it. I loved the romance that blossomed between Alex and Patience when they were young and free to choose it. The sweet interactions, and promises of love and a life together made them endearing to the reader. And then real life happened and Patience was suddenly forced into a betrothal with Alex's elder brother. When Alex returns, having inherited a title that he felt ill-prepared to assume, he learns that Patience did not in fact marry his brother. However, she is still being kept under the thumb of her tyrannical father who thinks only of himself. Patience learns that there is little left of the old Alex, the horrors of war and the things he has done as a soldier weighing heavily upon his mind. Despite all of the things against them, they resume their tentative friendship, learning that there is still a spark of their old love between them. Just in time for Patience's father to announce he has now promised her hand in marriage to a "much older" man who by all accounts is painted as something of a jerk. Alex steps in and does the only thing he can think of - he announces that they are to be married, even though he asked her and she gave him a solid denial. It was after they were married that I feel this story started losing some of its initial spark that drew me in. While I can understand Patience's displeasure at having been forced into a marriage with Alex, I would have thought she would on some level, been grateful that he did step in and save her from the marriage her father had once again arranged without her consent. I agree that she had every right to demand to be courted before she allowed Alex into her bed, but I do not believe she had to be so childish about it. Allowing him certain liberties one minute, then denying him the next. It is along these lines that I also found a level of annoyance with Alex. I can understand him wanting to protect Patience and keep her safe, but on some level, he had to have the common sense to know that she would not approve of his methods and that sooner or later his resolution to keep her in the dark could eventually aid his enemy in getting to her. Which brings me to my last point, and the absolute temper tantrum Patience throws, going so far as to leave her husband and refuse to see him or give him a chance for simply doing what he had to do in order to save his own life. Overall, I believe this story will still appeal to those who enjoy historical romances. I would read more from this author! Lady Patience meet and feel in love with Lord Alex Pemberton, the second son of the Duke of Bedford. Little did Patience know her father was betrothing her to his cruel brother Cyrus. Lord Alex decided to go into the army than stay and watch his brother marry the woman he loved and hopefully he’ll forget the woman that his heart belonged to. Now four years later Alex returns home after his brother the Duke has died expecting to be confronted by his widow Patience, but to his surprise they have never married due to certain circumstances. Patience remembers the young man she fell in love with, but is he the same man. Both Alex and Patience have changed and have hurt feelings, but can they move past the hurt and anger to find the lost love they shared. Alex's past intrudes and an old enemy abducts Patience and the race is on for Alex to safe the woman who he has always loved. A great book filled with romance, adventure and a HEA if they have the courage to love again. I voluntarily read the ARC copy from Net Galley and this is my honest opinion and review. |
Lord Alexander Pemberton is the second son, the spare, to the Duke of Bedford. He has always been pushed aside by the Duke and bullied by his older brother. Lady Patience Browning is just sixteen when her family pays a visit to the Duke if Bedford's estate. She immediately makes friends with the younger son, not realizing her fathers plans. When the betrothal announcement is made Alexander's life will change forever. The men of that time had a terrible habit of treating their women like brainless twits. It can cost them more than they could ever imagine. A lovely romance with a good dose of intrigue and characters who have a lot of growing to do. This is the first in a new series and I can't wait to read the rest. |
Denying the Duke’s romance between Alex and Patience found them making a quick, unexpected connection when Patience was only sixteen and Alex just twenty-one. They were/are both victims of bullying by family members, which had nothing to do with their early connection, but contributed to their desire to be careful when provided a second chance. Alex, the second son, becomes duke after the unexpected, early death of his brother. Alex is everything his brother was not - kind, considerate, compassionate and honest. Patience was of a similar personality. Alex was bullied by his brother and ignored by his parents. Patience was physically and emotionally mistreated by her father and unprotected by her mother. They met young when Patience’s family went to visit Alex’s family. Neither knew it was for the purpose of Patience to become betrothed to Alex’s older brother, the future duke. Alex and Patience were both broken heated when the betrothal was announced. Alex left and never looked back. Four years later, once his brother passes, Patience’s father insists to both of them they marry. He is desperate for funds that would come from the alliance. Callie Hutton built not only a sweet romance, but one of two people who still had a connection and wanted to be sure of that continued connection. Where Patience never stopped thinking about Alex, he did his best to put her from his mind and heart during his difficult military time away. Alex made himself think of her as his brother’s wife, never knowing she did not marry his brother. This is a charming, lighthearted addition to Hutton’s Lords and Ladies series that truly explores the gentleness and trust developed in love. Denying the Duke is a stand-alone book that can be ready without needing to read the previous books. You will fall in love with Alex and Patience as they each learn the importance of love, trust and communication! |
Really like historical books. Imaging what the time was like and if the events could happen the way the author envisions makes entertaining reading. Liked the story flow and the characters. Would recommend reading! |
lady patience has been bullied and ordered about without fail by her father, by the fiancé she never wanted, and finally by lord alexander, the new duke of beresford. the man she fell in love with when she was but sixteen and who left her behind when she was forced into a betrothal with his brother. she spends a lot of time out of control of her own life in denying the duke. when alex left he assumed that his brother, cyrus, would marry patience quickly. but on his return to his estate after his brother's death and four years in the military under his belt, he finds that nothing is what he thought it would be. as much as he would like to pick up where they left off, too many things have happened to them separately that it's impossible to recapture the five-day idyll when they first fell in love. but the spark between them is still there. and maybe they aren't the same young fools in love, but there's a chance that they could find a richer, deeper sort of love together. the problem is that they are forever not communicating with each other and making assumptions about how the other person is feeling. all they need is to be locked together in a room and to not just talk but listen to each other. because the love they discovered four years earlier is still there. (and when you think about it, it does make total sense that they are complete idiots in love, she's only just twenty and he's twenty-five, sure that passed for adult in the regency era, but they're kids. i mean, alex wears a mustache to look older. they're kids. this was an enjoyable regency, and even though part of a series, it totally stands alone. **denying the duke will publish on july 10, 2017. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/entangled publishing (scandalous) in exchange for my honest review. |
What a fun read!!! I love second chance romances!! There was passion, a strong heroine, danger, and denial. I fell in love with Patience and her struggles of being a woman in this time period. Callie did such a good job developing her inner dilemmas! Check out this book!!! Posting on good reads, amazon, and bn (lady c) |
Four years ago the hopes and plans Alex and Patience had for a future together were shattered when they learned that their fathers announced that Patience was to be betrothed to Alex’s brother Cyrus, heir to the dukedom. Devastated, Alex convinced his grandfather to buy him a commission in the army. He spent three years on the continent in war. He spent the last year in America chasing and capturing a traitor (who managed to escape shortly after he was turned over to authorities). Just before his return to England, he received word that his father and brother had died, Cyrus recently in rather scandalous circumstances, and that he was now the duke. Upon his arrival back home, Alex discovers that Cyrus and Patience never married. He is pleased, but doesn’t know what that means for him and Patience. Almost immediately the Earl of Wilton begins to push Alex to marry Patience. The couple still cares for each other, but both have changed and would like some time to get to know each other again. Alex would like to learn to handle his duties and responsibilities as Duke, before they take a permanent step. Patience wants to be free of her abusive tyrant of a father. She simply wants someone to love her for herself. Is it possible these two will find in each other what they need to be happy? It looks a little doubtful for a while. Denying the Duke has an interesting, slightly complicated plot that unfolds as the hero and heroine take a long ride on an emotional roller coaster. There are secrets, plots, betrayal, mystery, kidnapping, a little bit of humor, and of course, romance. Alex is plagued by nightmares of the war and filled with uncertainty about his new life. Patience does come across as immature, but that can be contributed to the abusive life she has had. She has never had a chance to experience life and grow up. There is a lot for Alex and Patience to work out. Alex’s friends and Patience’s cousin are wonderful characters who are there to help them find their way. All in all, an entertaining read that holds your attention from beginning to end. I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. I voluntarily reviewed it and the comments are my own. |
Alex and Patience fell in love when Patience was at his home where unknown to the young lovers she was betrothed to his older brother the heir to the dukedom Cyrus. That's when Alex left joined to fight the war and hopefully forget the woman that his heart belonged to. Cyrus a cruel man died before the marriage took place, Alex is now the Duke of Bedford. Not ready to face the woman who had haunted his dreams he ignores her at the funeral. Fortunately for Alex and Patience they still have a chance to have the love they were denied. Alex has demons that he fights because of what he witnessed in the war and Patience has an abusive father to deal with. Just when things seem to be working a traitor from Alex's past abducts Patience and the race is on for Alex to safe the woman who he has always loved. An excellent story a roller coaster ride that keeps you turning the pages. I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest unbiased opinion |
Callie Hutton always pens a great novel, and this story is no exception. I loved the spirit, strength and determination Patience had in refusing to be bullied by the men in her life. Here is a heroine I can stand up and cheer for! Alex was a heartwarming character that only want to show Patience that not all men are brutes and bullies. He wants to protects her, cherish her, love her and gain her trust. This was a beautiful tale about second chances and holding out for the one thing that matters most: LOVE. *I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley & Entangled Publishing, LLC in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so |

'Denying the Duke' by Callie Hutton is Book Three in the "Lords and Ladies in Love" series. This is the story of Patience and Alex. I have read the previous books in this series but feel this can be a standalone book. Patience and Alex met when she was 16 and he was 21 and fell quickly into young Love. They made promise to each other that they would be together in three years. Alex is the second son of a Duke and needed to start a life and make he own way in the world. So he asked that Patience wait for him for three years until he can settle enough money to take a wife. But, Alex later learned at dinner that night Patience hand in marriage would be given to his older brother. Patience too learned after that promise to Alex that her father had planned all along to marry her to the oldest son. Alex up and left that night of the dinner never to talk to Patience again until 4 years later when Alex returns to take of the Title of Duke after his brother's death. Only then after returning does he learn that Patience never married his brother. But he has changed greatly from the young man he was to a more jaded person today. Along with Patience who was once a innocent carefree girl who at one time her father all but ignored. But after her refusal to marry Alex's older brother her father and his brother made her life terrible. Alex and Patience learn that the once brothel between her and the older brother now might have to be met with Alex and her. Both are shocked at the information. Can they use the feelings they once had to move forward past the hurt and anger that they have lived through.? Wow this book takes you in with just the first few pages of their young love. I didn't want to put this book down at all!
