I freaking loved this story. It has everything you could possibly want in a historical romance and it gave me so many feels from beginning to end. I'm pretty sure I fell in love with Richard. You could feel his angst and struggle throughout the whole book and I felt so sorry for him. He's the perfect historical romance hero. Yeah, he makes some mistakes along the way but it's understandable considering the things he's had to endure. The balm to his soul and answer to everything is Evie. It's clear from the beginning that they're meant for each other. It's insta-love though neither of them realize it. The emotional and sexual tension between them throughout the book is unbearable at times but in a good way. Evie and especially Richard fight their feelings for so long and then there are some misunderstandings. It gets to a point where you wonder if they'll ever actually get together. There is certainly a HEA but it's hard earned one. So enjoyable to read though. This is such a sexy story but not overdone. I'll definitely be checking out more from Stacy Reid!

I enjoyed "How to Marry a Marquess" and intend to read other books in the series now. I gave it 3 stars rather than 4 because I found the hero unlike able. I realize that was the intention of the author, but it made parts of the book difficult to read.

Lady Evie Chesterfield feels the pressure from her parents to marry, but being in love with her brother's friend has her refusing proposal after proposal. However, when Evie discovers something about her family, she knows she no longer has a choice but to marry. Can she convince Richard Maitland, the Marquess of Westfall, to take a chance on love or will she lose the one person that means everything to her?

Everything about this book -- the wonderful main and secondary characters, the obstacles the hero and heroine face on their journey to happy ever after, and the fantastic dialogue -- kept me entertained from start to finish. Really, this was a story I could not get enough of due to the hero. He's notorious, a scoundrel and is adamant he'll never marry or fall in love. Will the heroine be able to win him over? Will he realize how much Evie means to him before it's too late? The way this story started had me liking the hero immediately, as it proves why he doesn't want anything to do with love. He was betrayed once before by the woman he loved, and there's no way he's going to let that happen to him again.

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the hero. He's been through a lot in his past and goes through a lot more in the present. Acknowledging his daughter is the right thing to do, even if it means being judged by society and his own family. Moreover, I liked how kind and caring the hero was towards people that don't have a lot. I also liked how he didn't care what people of high society thought of him and that he did everything he could to resist Evie for fear of ruining her reputation. While the heroine, I liked that she stood up for the hero when it came to her mother's harsh judgment of him. I also liked that she befriended him, even knowing that her association with him could make people judge her. Yet, what I liked most of all about the heroine is her determination to seduce Richard and that she was willing to do whatever it takes to win the hero over because he's the only man for her. Will her plan succeed? Will she be able to convince Richard that she can handle being judged by society for being with him?

Overall, Ms. Reid has delivered a charming and enjoyable read in thie book where the chemistry between Evie and Richard was strong and delightful, the romance illustrated how good these two are together, and the ending had me concerned for one of the main characters. Yet, in saying that, I liked how everything turned out for the hero and heroine. Finally, Richard realized how much Evie meant to him and I loved how he did everything in his power to win her back. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely, as readers discover whether Richard's relationship with his family gets any better. Will he be able to help his sister? I would recommend How to Marry a Marquess by Stacy Reid, if you enjoy Historical Romance, the brother's friends trope, or books by authors Collette Cameron, Tina Gabrielle, Jess Michaels and Callie Hutton.

Fun, passionate read! A delicious friends to lovers romp. Evie wants Richard to have forever, Richard wants Evie but not for marriage. A head strong lady can she bring the Marquess to his knees? A dark man on the edge of decency, can he keep her at arms length? Such an enjoyable read with real life problems and issues brought to light. Evie is a wonderful character with a kind heart and compassionate soul. Richard is a hardened but equally compassionate man- for those he deems deserving. Strong secondary from previous books lead to a fun and winding road to their happily ever after! Regency romance with passion, flirting, inuendos, and some interesting twists.

This was a wonderful friends to lovers story with vivid, engaging characters, a well-written plot that held my interest and richly detailed scenery that easily drew me into the "picture". The chemistry between Evie and Richard was undeniable, and the sexual tension fairly crackled off the pages. This novel fully satisfied my historical hankerings!

A good read but not one of her best. I went four stars for it is slightly unique in the story of taking in the bastard child. However, the roller coaster of emotions was very hard for me to handle. The setup of the relationship and the emotional ties in this book were done in a great way. The reader is never at a loss as to why the feelings are there only if it will ever go forward and stay going forward. I enjoyed the fact that the poor and underprivileged were a forefront in the story and had people with hearts that actually cared. I would think also that during that historical time with all the inbuilt prejudices of having your bastard children anywhere around the ton, that this was indeed a great way of writing this one. I enjoyed it and only had the small problem with the roller coaster of emotions being on again and off again. I was given this book in return for an honest review. Anna

How to Marry a Marquees
by Stacy Reid
5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Talk about being pole axed, poor guy didn't see it coming!
Lady Evie Chesterfield has always admired her older brothers best friend - Richard Maitland the Marquees of Westfall. Things changed for her when he found her casting up the contents of her stomach and crying because a certain Duke who was old enough to be her father was interested in making her his wife. When he gave her some friendly advice on how to not be the perfect lady by passing gas and belching, a special bond of friendship was born between them, even though he secretly lusted after her. Through every stage in his life she was there ,when he openly adopted his illegitimate daughter she truly accepted his decision- she was there to support him and when everyone shunned him she was there, and Evie fell more in love with Richard she was his rock of salvation even though he had not realized it...yet.

Richard Maitland bought his commission when the woman he was in love with refused to marry him even though she was carrying his child. A child she lied that she lost, only to give her to an orphanage.
Through out all his pursuits and his life taking a course that keeps him on the fringes of society Evie has always been his best friend and confidant never judging him. He has always felt this burning passion for her, but not being able to explore his feelings has him keeping his distance. Until she asks for lessons in seduction, beginning with a kiss, a most life altering one.

This was such an emotionally charged story Evie wasn't the belle of the ton that Richard had believed at first, she was a true heroine doing her best to win over the very stubborn Richard even attempting to abduct the silly man at gunpoint. The best part was when Richard gave up and finally gave in to his emotions. There are so many layers of emotions that when they slowly come away their very hearts are laid bare. Fast paced and poignant! An enjoyable read!

DNF @ 31%.

It's hard to write a review for a book in a series you've loved. But I just couldn't get into this one, no matter how hard I tried. I know that stopping at 31% doesn't seem like trying, but believe me, when you put it down then pick it up, it's trying. Not trying would be to stop at 10% and that's it.

Let me tell you what didn't work.

I have forgotten about Evie and what she did in book one - a friend had to remind me - but I didn't get to the part that would have refreshed my memory because I was already disliking her. Unlike the previous two heroines, she seemed whiny and weak, no backbone whatsoever and I was surprised because the difference between her and the previous heroines was huge. What happened?

And it lacked chemistry. It lacked that je ne se quois that had me reading the book without putting it down once. It was a blend of blah after blah.

But this doesn't mean I won't read other books by this author, hoping this was a one-time thing.

So, 2 stars, DNF and I voluntarily agreed to read an early copy of this book.

I can't put my finger on it but like the title 'Again the Magic' by Lisa Kleypas (yes I just dared to invoke the name of one my all time favorite authors), Stacy Reid has endeared her way on to my Top 10 Historical Romance Writers list. While this isn't necessarily my favorite story ('Sins of a Duke' holds that honor), Reid still has the perfect mix of character background, motivations, angst and resolution.

Evie Chesterfield has avoided matrimony for quite some time, a real feat considering she is so sought after. Much to her family's distress she holds out on a match due to her love for her brother’s friend, Richard Maitland, Marquess of Westfall.

Due to a tragic event in his own life, Richard has a heart of gold towards those ostracized by the ton . He is cynical of love and those in high society. While he is infatuated with Evie he still puts her in an undeserving preconceived category.

When Evie no longer has a choice about marriage she has to convince Richard, through seduction, that she is worth the risk to his heart.

What I love about this story and others Reid has written, is there is no magic wand that makes all difficulties go away. The characters need to work through their pain and often you get the impression that there will be more battles in their future. There is a realism of feelings in this fiction work. I can't wait for many more to come!

Instead of arranging a "meet cute" between her two romantic leads, author Stacy Reid has instigated a "meet puke." Yes, you read that right. Young Lady Evelyn, who hasn't even had her debut yet, is positively ill over the attentions of an older duke who finds her quite delectable. **Cue the reader's sympathy puke.** Luckily for Evie, the handsome young man she meets in the garden while tossing her victuals is handy with a shovel to bury said vomit and brazen enough to suggest a peculiar solution to her problem. From that moment on, Evie and Richard are unorthodox friends who find comfort in each other's good advice and steady regard. Unacknowledged but ever present is a hint of attraction that mushrooms into full-blown lust by the time Reid finishes the backstory chapters.

"She was the perfect and dutiful daughter, he was wild and unpredictable, and he was her greatest guilty pleasure in life."

I wish I could say that the tone remains light and airy throughout this classic Regency romance, but that would be incorrect. Richard, who has endured a very specific rejection due to his second son status, finds aristocrats to be snobs and capricious with their indignation. This attitude carries with it a refreshing honesty that pulls at Evie. Unfortunately, Richard's bitterness slowly overwhelms him, and it colors every aspect of his life. By the end of the book, it is Richard's rejection of himself and his assumptions about Evie that keep them apart. It goes on far, far too long for the health of the novel. I love to see a romantic couple overcoming obstacles together, but Richard was the obstacle. In fact, I became very angry with the horse's patoot. Of course, this means I was emotionally invested, but I was confounded by how contrary Richard was acting based on his past behavior and his personal beliefs.

That said, this is a very enjoyable Regency novel that revels in characterization. Reid also delves with alacrity into period social themes. In How to Marry a Marquess she addresses poverty, divided classes, philanthropy, orphanages, illegitimacy, child slavery, self-worth, prejudice, and more. What would make this novel even stronger is equal attention to sense of time and place and outside influences on the plot. The Wedded by Scandal books are very insular to the trials and tribulations of the main romantic couple. In her fantasy novels, Reid very, very capably builds heightened dramatic tension with specious villains and unparalleled action sequences; I would love to see some of that skill adapted for her Regency novels.

The saving grace is Evie - her growth, her resolve, her originality. Plus, she flat out tells Richard that he does not get to decide her strength. I loved that line.

Just when you think all story lines have been exhausted it is refreshing to be proven in error. This is a well told historical romance which will leave you wondering just how dense the hero can be and what will it take to open his proverbial eyes. If you enjoy tales with strong independent minded heroines this is a story you will enjoy.

I have rated this book 4.25 stars.

Since reading the first Wedded by Scandal book, Accidentally Compromising the Duke, I have been on tenterhooks for Evie and Westfall’s story. Stacy Reid did not disappoint. How to Marry a Marquess has it all: bright dialogue, meltingly sensual scenes, and a romance you can root for. I adored it.

What I liked best about Evie and Westfall’s relationship is that it is six years in the making. Ms. Reid takes readers on a journey that starts with a less than glamorous (but quite funny) initial meeting. Even though they’re immediately attracted to one another, the two of them are friends for years before the main story develops. I loved the chemistry Evie and Westfall had both as friends and lovers. The sexual tension was utterly delicious and their dialogue brightened up the page and made How to Marry a Marquess practically speed by.

While it’s clear to everyone that Evie and Westfall would make a great match, things aren’t so easy for them. Westfall’s life took a turn when he found and rescued his illegitimate daughter, Emily. Emily changed Westfall’s outlook on life and his patience for the hypocrisy of high society is limited. The fact that he loves his daughter and the other children he adopted made me melt, but his actions have made him a pariah in society. While he doesn’t care that his name has been dragged through the mud, he’s so protective of Evie that he won’t give them a chance because he doesn’t believe that the darling of society could be an outcast. Westfall’s passion for social reform made me love him, but I did want to shake him a time or two because he makes assumptions about Evie and what she does or does not think. Neither he nor Evie are perfect and that means that – even though they both have hearts of gold – they don’t always say or do the right thing. But even when they screw up, they mean well and Ms. Reid shows us why each acts the way they do. And all the ups and downs are totally worth it because their happily ever after is wonderfully romantic.

How to Marry a Marquess is the third Wedded by Scandal book, but it can easily be read as a standalone. As happened Accidentally Compromising the Duke, I made the mistake of trying to read this story on my lunch break, which was a terrible plan. Ms. Reid’s writing is so entertaining that if you have to put the story down, you’re counting the hours until you can get back to it. I love a good friends-to-lovers story and Evie and Westfall’s is simply fantastic.

when richard maitland, the marquess of westfall first met evie chesterfield he knew that she was not for him. she was too young. too innocent. too good. he'd already been burned by what he thought was love once. and he'd already vowed to never marry and never let his heart get involved again.

and sure there were moments where he wondered. where he yearned for more with evie. but those close calls only served to reaffirm his resolve. he wasn't going to give evie a chance for anything real. but what he doesn't count on is the pressure on evie to finally marry. she's a young woman of the ton, her duty is to get married. not only because it is what is expected, but also because it is the only way for her to pay her way. daughters are financial burdens until they marry and become someone else's problem.

in how to marry a marquess, evie decides it's finally time to take matter into her own hands. she's never fully understood richard's hesitation. she knows in her heart of hearts that he feels the same love for her as she does for him. he tries to keep her at arm's length, but he's been denying himself for so long it's only a matter of time before she wears him down.

and even still he doesn't have it in him to believe that evie is strong enough to stand up to society by his side. and part of his doubt stems from his need to protect her from those who would cut her. but part of it is also his inability to trust anyone but himself. and it's this distrust that almost kills evie. realizing how little he thinks of her breaks her heart. and the thing of it is, she could almost understand how deep his damage is, but he knows her. he is the one person she has shared all of herself with, and if that is not enough then nothing will be.

but when the prospect of losing evie forever is forced on richard, he realizes that he's been criminally stupid and unfair. he loves evie. she loves him. they can withstand anything society throws at them. he just has to have enough faith to believe that together they are stronger than they are apart. and while his scars run deep, the deepest cut to his heart would be losing evie for good, and so he must redeem himself. and when he does, it's pretty spectacular.

This is the third book in Reid's "Wedded By Scandal" series which focuses on a variety of couples caught in some sort of scandalous behavior. I really enjoyed the second book in this series, and this one was also entertaining.

The Story-
Evie and Richard have been friends for a long time. He's helped her keep unwanted suitors away since she was 16. But, now that it is time for her to actually marry, Richard is torn between helping her with lessons in seduction and finding a wife for himself and his illegitimate daughter.

My Thoughts-
I enjoy Reid's style which focuses more on character development and really hashing out why the two belong together. Although the plot is strong, it is the characters here who really shine. Evie is perfectly easy to imagine from the moment we meet her vomiting all over Richard's shoes and burping to warn off would-be suitors, but still beautiful and innocent. (Not joking. She is a lot of fun.) Richard is an equally well-drawn character, and it is great to see how Reid winds a path around their journey to each other.

The Bottom Line-
These books always have a different, refreshing feel to me that is welcome in a normally predictable genre. The only thing that kept this from 5 stars for me was that the conflict keeping the hero and heroine apart didn't seem to need as much time to resolve as it took. But, I will definitely be around for the next one in the series and recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical romance. 4 stars

'How to Marry A Marquess' by Stacy Reid is Book Three in The "Wedded by Scandal" series. This is the story of Evie Chesterfield and Richard Maitland. I have read (and Loved!) the other books in this series but feel this is easily a standalone book.
Evie first met Richard when she was almost 16 years of age. Richard is her brother's friend but she had never met him until she sneaked out one night upset about her parents trying to marry her off to an older Duke. Richard happened upon her when she had been physically sick with upset about her parents plan. Richard and Evie hit is off after he told her how to turn the Duke's attention away from her. They both agreed they would be friends...which they did.
Richard once thought himself in love and wanted to marry the lady but they lady in question had her heart set on a title. Richard at the time was a Second Son and had no such Title. Richard was heart broken and vowed to never marry. Richard does not trust or think that Love is true.
Richard really likes Evie but she is the darling of the Town and of late even with a Title that he inherited he knows being something more that his frined would ruin her. In addition, he doesn't want to loose their friendship...but it hard to keep is desire for her to himself.
I so love the friendship between Richard and Evie an how it slowly build into more. Richard for all his talk of not wanting to love he had a big heart for the less fortunate.
This is a book you will not be able to put down!! Loved it!

Evie, 16, and Richard, 24, meet as she’s throwing up in the garden during a house party. He boldly advises her how to withstand the unwanted pursuit of gentlemen her mother pushes her way. It is really quite inventive and I assure you you’ve not read this before in a romance. At least I haven’t. They immediately become friends and remain so for the next six years.

During this time Richard’s life is turned upside down. He is soon traveling down a path he never anticipated and yet feels strongly about. When society scorns his decisions, Evie remains steadfast as his friend.

This book has a lot of inroads that take you in different directions adding depth to the story as well as the characters. It is a rich, full story that deals with issues that were not only prevalent at the time but still has a message for society today. There is a scene that was actually extremely difficult to read because this author shades it with truth and grit.

I hesitate to share much more of the plot due to its intricacies. However, I will say that it is well written, fast paced while giving plenty of details as to the internal conflicts both the hero and heroine are dealing with, intriguing, humorous, and steamy. Richard is a strong protective hero that is struggling with his past as well as his future while Evie is a bit naïve about what life outside her insulated bubble really entails. The evolution of both of their characters was at times angst filled but beautiful.

I truly enjoyed this book and the lack of one star on my rating is due to the fact that I’m particular about my heroes being only with the heroine once they meet. I understand that is unrealistic, especially considering their age at the time they meet, but I live for the fantasy. Either way, I still cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who enjoys historical romances or anyone who is interested in trying one out.

This was a great friends to lovers romance. I read and enjoyed the first two books in the series and couldn't wait for Evie and Westfall's story. This was a quick read that completely engaged my emotions the whole way through. I appreciated how complex the characters were and how the grew and changed throughout the story. I liked that the romance was motivated by more than just physical appearances and that it took time for things to develop emotionally.

I received an advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Stacy Reid adds another novel to the Wedded by Scandal series. Here she introduces us to Lord Richard Maitland, and Lady Evelyn Gladstone. Maitland is a deeply emotionally damaged man, and despite the strong mutual attraction between him and Evie, he is determined that she is not the right woman for him.

This is not the lighthearted romance that the first two books in the series have been. Maitland is a dark character, in contrast to Evie’s relative naivete. Overall, though, an entertaining read.
