Author Brittany Luiz works for Tombow, so I had high expectations for this book. She does not disappoint! Lettering With Purpose is a great resource for entry-level lettering enthusiasts. With practical advice and encouragement, Luiz offers a basic but solid overview about supplies and lettering/typography terminology. Several attractive styles of lettering alphabets are presented, as well as mini projects to emulate. As a bonus, instructions on how to digitize your own hand lettering are also included. Lettering With Purpose is a solid title to start learning about lettering.

'Lettering with Purpose: Creative techniques and prompts for making meaningful, inspirational hand-lettered art' by Brittany Luiz is an instruction guide for those looking to create beautiful lettering.

The book starts with letter basics and lists of tools and materials. Then moves on to styles and techniques, flourishing and floral monograms. There are embellishments, tips on curing a chalkboard and lots of ideas for projects.

The initial instruction feels a bit brief, so this may not be enough for first time pen artists. I liked the examples, the lists of tools and some of the projects. They seem like attainable goals for any skill level.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing Group-Walter Foster, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

My apologies - I was unable to properly read this book before the epub expired. Thank you for the opportunity to read it - I'm sorry I missed it, and I'll look for it on Amazon. (Star rating is not reflective of any opinion, but only of the fact that Netgalley will not allow submission without)

I was granted to view an advance copy last month and I am rather ashamed for doing a review just now (sorry!). It's packed with lots of tips and step by step tutorials on how to create an entire lettering art piece.

I only got an ebook (which I don't think will be available for purchase) and like I said, I'm really looking forward to getting a personal print copy because of the activity pages you can write on!

This is very helpful not only to beginners but to intermediate-level artists as well. I love that it helps the user be able to think of their own ideas to letter. A definite must-have for every lettering-passionate.

Easy to follow inspiration. It even offers great advice for uploading as a vector. I read the digital version, which is handy, but I plan on getting the paperback.

With the popularity of BuJo (bullet journaling) and crafty endeavors, this is a wonderful book to have. Some of us (please tell me that it isn't just me) can be mesmerized by watching lettering videos on various social media sites. I love it. And every time I watch one I am convinced that I can do it...and with this book, I can!
Ms. Luiz takes the mystery of how to get your letters to look uniform, how to add detail and pizzaz and interest. Most importantly, for some, is the information on how to digitize your work! I do vinyl work (for apparel) in my free time and being able to craft my own one-of-a-kind font is priceless!
Adding to the practical uses of the information in this book, it is just pretty. The lettering in it is beautiful. I can't wait to put more of this book to use.

I highly recommend this book!

If you’ve spent an inkling of time lately on social media, you’ve likely seen some gorgeous inspirational graphics created by handlettering. As someone who adores a good font, I’ve been jealous of anyone who can create such beautiful graphics without relying on a predefined font. However, what if you didn’t have to scour anymore for that perfect font or gorgeous vector art that gives a graphic just the right embellishment? What if you could create it yourself?

In the new book LETTERING WITH PURPOSE, author and artist Brittany Luiz teaches you how to develop your own professional hand-lettering, calligraphy, and brush-lettering techniques.

I am now in awe of anyone who can draw such beautiful letters because there is much more to consider than you might initially think. Besides grasping the idea of basic composition, you also have to master the basics of what creates a letter—i.e., ascenders, descenders, crossbars, bowls, etc. If you are wondering what all of that means, you are not alone. Brittany explains it thoroughly in the book, thankfully. I now have even greater respect for people who have taken years to create a perfect font family, even more so for font designers who give their work away for free.

If you’ve got a lot of dedication, time, and a little bit of money that you’re willing to spend on supplies, LETTERING WITH PURPOSE will jumpstart you to becoming a professional hand-lettering designer. It provides full-color, step-by-step instructions on how to create the effects shown in the photographs. I really appreciate that it tells you what pens/inks/watercolors/etc you should use to create the same look, leaving no guesswork as the reader develops their own skills. I particularly like that the end of the book gives you 100 project ideas to help get your creative juices flowing so that you don’t allow your newly acquired skills to get rusty. It also provides practice alphabets to mimic until you are confident enough to create your own unique letters.

One of the only negatives I have for this book is that the page design seem a little immature with standard top and bottom zig-zag pattern borders (as seen in post header that I snagged from the book; recolored it from original bright pink). Granted, it does leave plenty of room for the photos, but I felt like it made the book look suited more towards a young adult. Also, I didn’t really like that the author recommends a brand of pens made by Tombow, the company she works for since that seems a little bit like mixed interest. It would be better if Luiz spelled that out in the beginning of the book when she’s recommending supplies rather than hiding that fact in her biography. She doesn’t recommend brand name items for sketchbooks, watercolors, etc, I’m assuming because Tombow doesn’t make those items.

With that being said, perhaps it would be a great idea if the publisher offered this book packaged up with basic supplies in a bundle!

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars using the GoodReads scale! Thanks to Netgalley for giving me this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Lettering With Purpose is a brand new release from professional lettering artist and instructor Brittany Luiz, designed to teach readers how to get started with lettering and encourage them to create their own beautiful artwork.

The book takes you through all of the basics from tools and materials to compositions, different styles and even how to digitize your work using Photoshop. Once you have the basics mastered the book also shows you how to build upon these skills with tips on how to develop your own personal lettering styles using flourishes, frames and other extras. As well as basics and advice there are several full alphabet examples included which showcase different styles of lettering to help you practise and encourage you to develop your own personal style.

When you feel ready to put your new lettering skills to the test the book has some great art print project ideas using various techniques and materials such as watercolour paints and chalkboard pens. At the back of the book is the author’s favourite section, a set of 100 creative prompts complete with space to practise each one, plus a list of tips to help you find inspiration for your designs going forward.

Overall I think Lettering With Purpose is a great book for beginners, covering all of the basics needed to get you started with this art form and providing inspiration to encourage readers to create their own unique lettering styles and designs. I have my new brush pens at the ready and am looking forward to trying out all of the tips and tricks included in the book!

I have to admit, I didn't care for the first half of the book. I found myself skimming it instead of reading. Nothing against the author, it's a fine book. But I have read a few books on lettering this year and do not feel the first half of the book added anything I hadn't already seen.

In fact, had I not decided to hurry up and finish it (the review copy I got will expire), I would have not liked this book as much as I did. The second half of the book is prompts. I realize the word "prompts" is in the title but I am still surprised. Often the prompts in books like this are a quick little "practice this word" or a really generic suggestion of how to use the empty space in the book as a "workbook". This book has some serious prompts, 100 of them to be exact. While some are not for everyone (ex. letter your favorite sports team made me ask myself "does writing the word "none" count?") most are prompts that anyone can use (ex. give yourself a pep talk. Letter something encouraging).

Sadly I cannot justify buying a copy myself because the first half of the book didn't interest me. That said, if the author ever releases a book of nothing but prompts, I am in. I also find this to be a good first book on the subject if you do feel like you need prompts as well as instruction. For me the book as a whole is maybe 3 stars, but the second half is a solid 5 as I feel just deciding what to letter is often much tougher than figuring out how to write it.

It's a really helpful guide to lettering. With enough practice, I learned so much. It contains a lot of different fonts and techniques. I really like it.
