I have got to admit, I expected this to be a typical thriller/domestic noir along the lines of ‘Gone Girl’ and ‘The Girl on the Train.’ However it turned out to be quite different and not what I expected at all.

Sophie Hamilton seems to have the perfect life – husband, house and mother of three, but obviously it’s not all as it seems. Suspecting that her husband is having an affair triggers off some unexpected events.

Even though some of it seems a wee bit far fetched there were a number of comic moments that had me laughing out loud at times. There are a few twists and shocks along the way keeping this an interesting read with a slight cliffhanger ending and brings to it a great twist on the whole notion of ‘the other woman.’

I was expecting a psychological thriller but I im not sure i would describe it as that, to me it was a bit more tongue in cheek chick lit maybe? The mystery of who sent the letters brings the psychological thriller edge but I’m not sure what category to put it into.

I am glad I read it and I will look out for further books by Laura Wilson,

Worth a read if you don’t take it too seriously 🙂

A tense and well paced thriller that keeps the reader guessing.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me a pre release copy of this book.

Sadly, I found this novel lacking. Much of what I read was about an over priveleged wife and mother complaining about her lot in life. And I have to agree with others who have reviewed this title in that the author went into far too much detail about everything. I found it dull and not the least bit thrilling and, sadly, about a third of the way in I abandoned the book.

I thought this was going to be a psychological thriller, and i have read a few lately, so had high hopes for it. Unfortunately it became too far fetched and ridiculous for me and I gave up on this one by the time Sophie killed
the woman she suspected of having an affair with her husband and hid the “other woman’s body” in the garage chest freezer single handedly about a third of the way in! Too many good books waiting for me, sorry x

I absolutely loved this story. Sophie, Leo and their three children have an idyllic life and want for nothing. Leo works Monday to Friday in London and Sophie and the children spend their time in the old vicarage, Every Christmas Sophie sends out many letters with her Christmas cards telling of their life in the past year. She has received one letter back with "HE'S GOING TO LEAVE YOU, LET'S SEE HOW SMUG YOU ARE THEN. STUPID .........", scribbled on the back. The previous two Christmases she had similar letters! Sophie becomes obsessed with finding out who Leo is having an affair with and the story races along at 100 miles an hour in her quest!!

Maybe this is not my type of book. I am sorry but I thought it was not believable at all and had no depth to it. I didn't like any of the characters and I could not warm to anything in the book at all.

The other woman by laura wilson.
Shortly after Christmas, a message arrives at Sophie's house, scrawled across her own round robin newsletter: He's Going To Leave You. Let's See How Smug You Are Then, You Stupid Bitch. Perhaps she should ignore it, but she ignored the last one. And the one before that. Now it's time to take action.
But when a simple plan to identify and confront the other woman goes drastically and violently wrong, Sophie must go to extreme lengths to keep her life and her family together-while never letting on her devastating secret.
A fantastic read. A shocker of a read. Kept me reading and guessing until the last page. 5*. Netgalley and quercus books.

Sophie seems to have the perfect life.  A gorgeous house in Norfolk, where she and her family de-camped a few years earlier to escape the hustle and bustle of London, children who are excelling at school or about to head off to Oxbridge (after their year spent travelling, of course), a successful business, and a husband who loves her.
Or at least perfection is what she wants everyone who receives her annual round robin letter to think  She artfully airbrushes out anything that doesn’t quite fit with the world she has created.  It is pretty clear from pretty early on that, for Sophie, appearances matter – as do things.  She likes to shop and she likes to show off what she has.
And, in the grand scheme of things, especially if you compared her life to those of others, there probably isn’t much she can moan about.  Nobody is perfect, and neither are their lives, but hers is pretty close.  At least it is until one of her round robin letters is returned, defaced with words that send her spiralling – Leo (her husband), they say, is having an affair and is about to leave her.
Rather than confront Leo (who has been acting strangely), Sophie sets out to find out who is sending the letters – and who her husband is about to leave her for.  Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as she first thought and so her eyes start to accuse anyone and everyone who crosses her path, seeing in them lies and deception.  Watching her spiral, and where it eventually led her, was great to read – in that it made for a tense story with lots of questions, twists and turns.
Then comes a big old twist, one I won’t share for spoilers.  I didn’t see it coming is all I will say.  I also have to say I couldn’t quite see where the book could go from there and, for me, it felt that Wilson didn’t either.  The next half of the book flagged for me as a result.  The tension I had felt was gone and was replaced by confusion and frustration, with Sophie but also with the story, which didn’t seem to go anywhere for quite a while. There were quite a few scenes which, whilst different, were also similar – putting Sophie on the spot and having the effect of having her fall apart just a little bit more.
I think that was the point – to show Sophie slowly but surely falling apart but I have to say, for me, there was one (maybe two) situation too many.  I wanted to move on and get back to the action.  Eventually, I got what I wanted but it was probably a bit too little, too late.  A twist in the end saved it and a feeling that it couldn’t have really gone any other way for Sophie left me satisfied.  That, and the fact that Wilson is a good writer with a great way with word.  Still, it all left me liking but not loving the book – sorry!

What do you do when you suspect your husband is having an affair. Well you invite his mistress round for a cup of tea. That's exactly what Sophie does when she believes her husband Leo is having an affair on things don't go to plan.

I have read many books by Laura Wilson and I always look forward to them and know that I will enjoy them. This book is no exception. The story was so unbelievable at times but such fun to read.

From the point of the mistress being invited for a cup of tea I really couldn't put the book down. The plot has a snowball effect where one situation leads to another, gathering speed and memento as it goes. The situation for Sophie seems to get more ridiculous as it goes but as a reader I couldn't see how it was going to pan out. There were a few surprises in the story which I didn't see coming but explained some of the plot. I'm not sure with the ending as it leaves me wondering what next.

This story was fun to read and was a real roller coaster of a read. A quick read as I wanted to see what was going to happen next, and I would highly recommend this book and author.

Thanks to the publisher via Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review the book.

This is one of those books that leaves you wondering "what did I just read?!" It's gripping, thrilling and leaves you shocked from the start to the last page. Really great book, highly recommend it

I will probably be in the minority here as I've seen 4 and 5 star reviews for this book. I really wanted to like The Other Woman, but it was one of those books that didn’t hook me in.
The start and ending were good though and made up for the long winded middle section. Found myself skipping pages at a time. For me it was simply an okay read because I expected more.

Thank you.

Unfortunately not for me, I broke my own rule of always finishing every book I start, giving up less than a quarter of the way through

The other woman........not quite sure if I liked this or not but after a couple of days from finishing it I have decided that I did I just wouldn't class it as a psychological read more comedy/thriller!!!
The story sets off well and then it changes into a slightly comedic read. Sophie is a lady of the manor type 3 kids, a loving husband, a cleaner and a live in helper. The most she seems to do is a couple of hours in her shop every week and walk the dog!! Until her smug red robin letter that she sends to all her friends at Christmas is returned with a message on saying her husband he's been having an affair for the last two years and is going to leave her. Here the story goes slightly comedic as Sophie tries to track down the other woman and what happens when she does is hilarious and unbelievable BUT this is still a great read. There are a few twists and shocks along the way keeping this an interesting read and the end although a slight cliffhanger was fast paced leaving me unable tout it down to see how Sophie managed to get herself out of it!!!
I would like to thank netgalley and Quercus books for the ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.

I thought I'd read every type of 'domestic noir' out there but Laura has managed to do something genuinely fresh and different. Funny and gruesome in equal measure, I highly recommend it.
