Recent widow thinks it’s time to get her life back, starting by returning to her speaker business. Flying to Vegas, the plane she’s in runs into a huge storm, necessitating a diversion to Denver. The pilot is a fan of hers, and his plan to woo her takes off (all pun intended). Though because of their schedules they don’t get much time together—plenty of time skips, which are not ideal—they do manage to have moments in Vegas and NY before he whisks her off to Hawaii for a week of relationship building.
Everything’s happy for the first half, but it can’t last, otherwise there’d be no story. Finally something happens to destroy their happiness. Some of it is a little obvious, like when a baby’s introduced; I instantly knew where he’d end up, and I’m pretty sure most readers did too.
I liked the writing well enough, but the plot was kinda clunky. At times felt by the numbers.

I was expecting more from Taking Flight than I got. I wanted more vibrancy, stronger characters and deeper chemistry, and I didn't get it so I was left to force myself to finish, even though I was bored out of my skull.

Ivy is a successful motivational speaker who has lost her husband to cancer. Things were bad for her as the disease took its toll on her husband. It turned him mean, sometimes physically, and he was always lashing out at her. Now that he's gone, she still hasn't been able to move on. Then on a flight to finally start working again, she hears the sexy voice of the flight's pilot. When he comes out and introduces himself to her later in the flight, she's taken aback, but she takes notice that he's even hotter than his voice. But, she's not ready to move on and doesn't take him up on his offer to call him, so it's left him to pursue her. Pursue her he does, but there will end up being a more obstacles than just Ivy's grief and refusal to move on. Can they get past it when Ivy refuses to stay and fight for them? When Lucas doesn't ask more questions and research what has been a huge change in his world?

While I like the premise of Taking Flight, its execution is lacking. I never felt the connection and the chemistry between Lucas and Ivy to be very strong. Nor did I really like either of them, they were bland, boring, generic characters. There was potential for a really meaty story here, but the author just didn't attack it the way she could have, should have. About the only standout in Taking Flight is Jade, Ivy's older sister who is a hard-nosed detective, and the only reason Lucas and Ivy even got their s*** together and figured things out. Thank God for her suspicious nature and her determination that her little sister be happy with Lucas. Because if she had left their relationship up to them, they'd never have gotten back together. If Jade is given her own story, I'd gladly read it, because she is a vibrant, interesting character, unlike her sister and her sister's lover.

Loved it! The ups and downs of the relationship was interesting to read. You really felt for the characters. I'm hoping for a book about Ben and maybe Jade finding her one in the future while i keep my eye out for future books by this author.
