The mistake by K.L. Slater.
Eight-year-old Billy goes missing one day, out flying his kite with his sister Rose. Two days later, he is found dead.
A brilliant read. Great story. Couldn't put it down. 5*.

Rose has been haunted by guilt over the death of her brother. Years later, she discovers their neighbor Ronnie has a dark dark secret and now she's in danger herself. A good read for fans of psychological thrillers.

I really like KL Slater's books. This one wasn't my favorite, but it was still interesting. It was as much about how people reacted to the disappearance than the actual disappearance. It kept me interested, and the characters were good.

The Mistake is a a thriller, but it is also a book about how a family is affected by the murder/disappearance of a family member. Rose has never gotten over her grief and shame over her brother's disappearance and death, feeling that she should have helped him. However, after finding something in a neighbor's house, she begins to wonder if she was wrong about what the thought actually happened. This book had some twists and turns and was a good book.

I really enjoy KL Slater’s books! This one wasn’t her best but it was a good story that had twists and turns to keep you guessing. It also had a story behind the kidnapping plot. I rate this book a 3.4

K.L. Slater takes readers on a journey where You think you know the truth about the people you love, But one discovery can change everything:

Eight-year-old Billy goes missing one day, out flying his kite with his sister Rose. Two days later, he is found dead. Sixteen years on, Rose still blames herself for Billy’s death. How could she have failed to protect her little brother? Rose has never fully recovered from the trauma, and one of the few people she trusts is her neighbour Ronnie, who she has known all her life. But one day Ronnie falls ill, and Rose goes next door to help him… and what she finds in his attic room turns her world upside down. Rose thought she knew the truth about what happened to Billy. She thought she knew her neighbour. Now the only thing she knows is that she is in danger…

This is the second book that I have read by Slater and I am disappointed with it, and maybe I should have given more time but when I'm 35% into the book, according to my kindle, and I was not interested in the story/plot/main character I had to put this book down. I'm sorry to say that this is my fist DNF book of 2020.

I liked that there was back and forth between the past and presence as we know that Rose's brother is going to be kidnapped and murder and I liked that Slater was going to take the time to lays things out on how they got there, but it was just taking too long to get to anything substantial. And the in the present time it was more about the library closing and how Rose is going to survive that if it happens, Rose is not questioning the murder of her younger brother, though she is still feeling the affects of it. So I question why are we visiting the present and not just telling the story in the past?

I know i'm in the minority with this review, but I'm Sorry Slater that this book was not for me. It was missing the intrigue and thrills that was in the previous book of yours that I read. Although this one was not for me, I will read another book by Slater.

Cheers!!!!

I am currently working on expanding our school library's senior section after years of a dismal and uninspiring selection of books that our older readers never checked out. My job has been to seek out much more diverse, gripping and modern books that will get them into reading by appealing to as broad a range of readers as possible. This really appealed to me because of its fantastic narrative and sense of atmosphere, combined with believable characterisation and its page-turning nature. It's hard to get young people into reading and if the library is not stocking the kind of book that they might grow up to buy as adult readers then we are not really meeting their needs. I can imagine this provoking lots of discussion after finishing it and a long queue of people trying to reserve it as they've heard so much about it. Will definitely be buying a copy and know that it's going to be a very popular choice. An engrossing read that kept me up far too late to finish reading it. It certainly stood out from the other books that I was considering and I look forward to converting more K.L. Slater fans in future!

This was a scary book to read, in the sense of how quickly a woman can get under the influence of a man without even realizing it. Especially if you are still young and gullible.
I love the way the book is written, both in the past and the present, explaining things as it goes along.
It was well written and worth the time.
Recommended.

This thriller wasn't exactly thrilling for me as I was only slightly interested in what was going on. I did want to know the ending so I read the whole book.. I wish I'd listened to it instead as I feel that in audio it probably would have more thrilling moments in it.

This book has been sat for some time on my kindle, and I swore I had read it but I think it was a read I started several times before settling down into it. Anyway, I did start it again and after a quick read over the synopsis, I realised i hadn't in fact read it.

Rose has never really recovered from the shock of her brother going missing and then been found dead two days later, it has changed her whole life - the whole way she lives is influenced by her time as a teenager.

Rose pretty much has been alone but that's okay - because she looks put for her neighbor Ronnie but when he has a fall and his last message to her is to not go upstairs her whole world changes, and the neighbor she thought she knew might no longer be.

The Mistake is told in two time tenses. Rose as a teenager, getting her first boyfriend, her time with her best friend and tension of day to day family life. We also see Rose in the present tense in terms of how it has changed her.

This was unsettling, creepy and really well paced. I felt the tension and frustration build. Tension as the narrative built and frustration for Rose that she couldn't see what the reader could. This was a real hook you in read, yes there was a twist - one I didn't see coming but I feel like there was so much going on in the background I would have never caught it anyway.

I do sometimes worry when a read states a twist is coming because I think feel like I sometimes spend the time trying to guess what is actually going to happen. However, like I said with this one, I was so invested in everything else that was happening, i kind of forgot.

A fantastic read that was so unsettling that I certainly spent a lot of it in a mild state of panic and that for me, was what made it brilliant. I hope this review hasn't given too much away as i went into it fairly blind and i think that helped it out.

Would easily recommend 4/5

Kim Slater has really carved a niche for herself in the crowded psychological thriller genre. If you enjoyed her previous novels then The Mistake will surely be on your reading list.

In a little mining village Rose and her family live a quiet life. Her art course at college fills her days and little brother Billy is an eight year old whirlwind always playing football and flying his kite.

When Billy goes missing on a day out with Rose the whole village is distraught and when his body is found two days later nothing will ever be the same again. Rose blames herself for Billy's death and sixteen years later she is still suffering from post traumatic shock and fighting with her bulimia to create a semblance of a normal existence.

A chance discovery of Billy's comfort blanket in the home of a trusted neighbour leaves Rose wondering what really happened to her brother. Controlling and twisted, her ex boyfriend Gareth, has just spent the last sixteen years in prison but he may not have been the guilty party.

I found Rose to be quite a weak and unlikeable character. A girl with no self confidence who allows herself to be bullied, dominated and abused. A cycle that only ends when she is rescued by her father. Subjected to psychological torture, physical abuse and emotional bullying Rose feels that she cannot speak up and still believes that she must be at fault if something is wrong. At times it is a frustrating read and it deals with some pretty uncomfortable situations. The final denouement was a complete surprise - I was convinced I knew who had done it.

Let me start by saying this is not a bad book. I just didn't love it. I know many have and I am in the minority.
I'm not sure why this was compared to Gone Girl.
I think there was way too much dialogue and that made it really hard to get into, especially in the beginning half of the book.I didn't connect with main the character Rose and therefore had no sympathy for her or her situation.
The ending was surprising so that's what I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. I like it when a book has tricked me into "whodunit"

I love K.L. Slaters books, they are always the kind of book that you start to read and get yourself emotionally attached to the main character and this as with all of K.L. Slaters books was the way it went. There were times while reading this book that I wanted to grab Rose and shake her.
Rose a librarian who lives alone in the same little village where she has always lived is still many years later mourning the loss of her little brother Billy. Rose knows everyone and everyone knows her and the tragic story of her past. But after helping an elderly neighbour everything Rose thought she knew and was sure of is thrown into disarray. The story is filled with domestic violence and control. This is a brilliant book that although you have an idea of what’s going on you still aren’t 100% right up to the end. Loved it. Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book to read and review

The Mistake is a very chilling, unsettling story that will keep you guessing until the very end. As damaged as the main character is, you find yourself hoping that somehow she will be able to pick up the pieces and make a new life for herself. One where she can walk out of the house at night, or leave a window open to enjoy a cool breeze. She's paranoid about her own safety, but she has plenty of reasons...

When Rose was 18, her little brother vanished while they were out enjoying a windy day. She'd been spending most of her time with her new boyfriend and neglecting her little brother, and she was determined to make it up to him. Last time she saw him, he was going to retrieve his kite, insisting that he could go on his own. She regrets letting him go on his own for the rest of her life. Days later, his body is found. Her little brother is gone.

Sixteen years later, Rose has never resumed a normal life. Her visits to her elderly neighbor Ronnie are the extent of her social life. Ronnie has always been there, and after he loses his dear wife, she helps him out every once in awhile. When he falls ill and is taken to the hospital, she feels guilty as if she may not have been helping him enough. His house could use a thorough cleaning. What she finds as she tidies up will change her life and throw everything she thought she knew into doubt: did Ronnie have something to do with the death of her little brother?

This was a very gripping book, and K.L. Slater's descriptions of Rosie's relationship with her manipulative boyfriend were chilling and came across as very realistic. It always starts off as something small, just a bit of control... and then you realize your opinions and thoughts no longer really matter. It was a book I found hard to put down and finished in only two sittings. I'm really looking forward to reading even more of the author's work!

I received a copy of this book from Net Galley and Bookouture, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.

“The Mistake” is an engaging psychological thriller that alternates back and forth between sixteen years ago and present time. While I felt it started off a little slow, I soon found myself engrossed and desperate to reach the conclusion.

This is the third K.L. Slater book I have read and it will not be the last.

This is a 5 star story. It's a modern thriller with plenty of twists and turns. I found it easy to read and I would thoroughly recommend the book.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC for my Kindle.
A young, coming of age girl is swept off her feet by an older boy who becomes her first love. Tragically the relationship is a bad one and results in heartbreak, physical and emotional abuse, and lasting consequences.
"The Mistake" was not what I thought was "the mistake" in the book. Some surprises including the ending but mostly a sad and tragic story of how a relationship effects more than just the two people in the relationship.

Sixteen years ago, Rose experienced a horrible trauma, suffered the loss of her best friend, Cassie, and also her brother, Billy, disappeared and was later found murdered. All seemingly at the hands of one man -- the psychopath who was her boyfriend at the time -- Gareth Farnham. Now she's fearful, anorexic, bulimic and lives alone in the house where she grew up. Working at the library in town, she has not moved on from that period of time. When Rose makes a startling discovery at her neighbor's house, she knows it is up to her to finally ask the questions and get the answers she needs in order to regain her life.

Told in back and forth narrative between present day and the past, Rose describes the events and her reactions to all that took place. She's quite a mess now and the reader hopes she can find the backbone and strength to see this through. This is not particularly suspenseful, but it is a nicely woven mystery with psychological overtones. The theme is one that is quite prevalent and I will only say that it has to do with men who isolate and control those victims they seek out and attempt to capture. It takes some twists and turns on the way to a surprising conclusion and I enjoyed it. I'll continue to read others by this author.
