A fun and fantastic way to revisit Poe's work.

Both the art and the text selection are quite good, particularly for The Fall of the House of Usher (the best art of any of the included stories), as well as The Masque of the Red Death and The Cask of Amontillado.

Fair warning: all of the art is in black and white. I thought this quite appropriate for visual depictions of Poe's work, but likely not appealing for those who prefer their manga to be in full color.

I really loved this graphic novel. I really enjoy reading Edgar Allen Poe’s stories and this graphic novel did not disappoint. I feel that this graphic novel makes it very easy to read be it for an adult or for a younger teen. The illustrations are beautiful and of course the stories are great and attention grabbing. Loved this novel.

A good adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's works and my first book from the manga classics series. I've only read a bit of his original work so these were mostly new to me. I'm not someone who generally enjoys poems too much, so I thought the graphical format of his famous poem was especially well done. Well worth a read!

As someone who is a big fan of both Edgar Allan Poe and of Mangas, this was a very nice read!
The art and lines are amazing, and the plots we have around this volume are just stunning, much like the works of the author!

It's something to give a read when you have a time and want to have something of Poe, but not the want to pick up one of his books. As well as something that even someone who didn't read any of the author would enjoy!

Even though manga is not my style, I had a nice time reading this!
It is interesting being able to see Edgar Allan Poe's stories played out through pictures.
I give this 3.5 stars out of 5, it was a good read but I would only recommend this to someone who is a fan of manga, and/or a fan of E.A.P.

This was an interesting reading experience, the first of its kind for me. I never read a Manga before, i was however interested by the topic of this one and curious about it.
I enjoy reading stories of Edgar Allan Poe as he has an amazing way of conjuring vivid images with only a handful of pages.
Five of Poe's stories were features in this book, and i found their interpretation rather interesting. My enjoyment of the experience depended upon the story and the way the images fit or not the things i imagined when i first read the stories. Probably not the best way to base an opinion on, but that's the way it is. I particularly liked The Masque of Red Death, it was really expressive, contrarily to The Fall of the House of Usher which felt somehow off.
I guess it is difficult to translate into images the words, intonations and scenes of Poe, but this would probably be of high interest to young readers who may find Poe a bit intimidating.
It was an enjoyable experience nonetheless.

This manga version of Edgar Allen Poe's classic stories really helps to bring the stories to life! The artist has done an excellent job of making these creepy tales even creepier. You really get to see what the old man's vulture eye looks like in "Tell-Tale Heart" and the costumes and setting for "A Cask of Amontillado" help those unfamiliar with the time period understand what is going on. I can see this being an excellent supplement to an English teacher's classroom to assist students with understanding the stories that can sometimes be difficult to grasp. I very much enjoyed reading this version and seeing the stories, with which I was very familiar, in a new light.

This is a great book for those who like Edgar Allan Poe and would like to read it in a non traditional way.

Very gothic and very eerie! The most important aspect in a gothic novel/story is creating that haunting atmosphere which the illustrations (by various artists) here captured perfectly. My favorite is The Raven and I loved how it was captured. A wonderful supplement to those who love Poe's work or for those looking to start reading him.

My only complaint is how I wish Annabel Lee was also chosen to be illustrated.

I am a huge Edgar Allan Poe fan, His short stories are AMAZING. When I saw that there was a manga format that could make me have a whole new experience, and it was a whole world apart, I was thrilled .
This was a hit for me, I just loved seeing how the artist interpreted the characters (in the sense of how they look), and how the scenes came to life. I really enjoyed, the art and the fact that the story was so true to the original, sure there were less details, as it is always the case when you change the format of something, but it was a delight to read, it was fast and really made it have another dimension.
I would've preferred if there were a bit more details or exactitudes as some of my favourite passages (specific sentences) in the original stories were absent.
Overall it is a must for anyone having a hard time with classics but still somewhat enjoying the essence of Edgar Allan Poe's stories.
And a great gift for anyone who loves manga but wants to know more about classics.

I think I need to buy this one and give it an annual reread during the Halloween season, because it was perfect. I love Edgar Allen Poe and thought this was a nice tribute to his works.

I’ve actually read several of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories before and was really looking forward to reading this. Sadly it just didn’t work out. I tried for over half an hour to download this book on three different devices using four different ways and none of it worked. I’ve never had a problem with this before on Netgalley. It seems unfair to base the book and my review on that so I’m just going to leave a neutral three stars. Its such a pity because I quite enjoyed A Cask of Amontillado and The Mask of the Red Death.

If you like Edgar Allan Poe and you like mangas, you will like this book - a lot!

Stories that can be found in this Manga Classic are: The Tell-Tale Heart (creepy), The Cask of Amontillado (weird), The Raven (excellent!), The Masque of the Red Death (creepy and lush), The Fall of the House of Usher (weird and creepy). I did not like all the stories but Poe is at fault there, not Stacy King. ;-)

I especially enjoyed "The Raven" because it's one of my favourites.

"The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe" are very close to the original stories and the drawings are excellent if you like the manga style. Especially architecture and background drawings were well done and enhanced the atmosphere of the stories a lot.

I’ve always been an Edgar Allan Poe fan and read a lot of his works. That being said there were a few I had not read so it was an exciting new way to experience the ones I hadn’t read. For the ones I had I really enjoyed the way the art bought the expressions together. Poe was the perfect choice to make into manga because the artists really captured the expression of horror involved with his writing. The artists chosen for this collection did a great job.
I think this is perfect for horror and Poe fans alike and I would love to see more volumes of his work done. I can’t wait to check out more from the Manga Classics line.

I love Poe, no matter what the format and this does not disappoint. It would even be appropriate to give to a little younger audience or would encourage a reluctant reader with the pared down text. I very much enjoyed this adaptation, especially "The Raven" for it's claustrophobic feeling that was emphasized by the drawing style.

I love this story. I find how Poe writes the story and the manga version worked together really well. The artwork in the manga really brought the story to life. It allowed me, as a reader, to see the slow decline of the narrator not only through his words bu this expressions. I loved this.
The Cask of Amontillado by Chagen: 4.75/5
I had read this story for a class before and we had discussed the complex tones of this story. I really loved how the manga artist caught the dark undertone of Montrestor. They also caught his cunning flattery to get Fortunato to do what he wants. This was so good.
The Raven by Uka Nagao: 5/5
Wow this brought a new depth to this poem. I have always liked The Raven but this made me appreciate so much more depth in it. The added story that the manga artist did for this was absolutely amazing and made me look at this poem in a new light.
Also fun fact about ravens: they can imitate human speech and sound human when they speak. Which makes the raven in this even more creepy.
The Masque of the Red Death by Pikomaro: 4.5/5
This was one Poe's stories that I hadn't read yet and wow. I am honestly shocked by this story and it's underlying tones, it's so good. Poe's words and themes work so well with the manga artist who worked on this. The artist was able to capture the undertones of the story and make it creepy right when it was right. This was well done.
The Fall of the House of Usher by Linus Liu and Man Yiu: 4/5
This one was always one of my least favorite Poe works as I feel it drags a bit. However, the artwork in this really made it ten times better for me. I loved seeing the visual of this story and the slow decline of Usher. This was sufficiently creepy and I'm feeling a bit jumpy after this story. The artwork for this was perfect for the story.
Overall, I throughly enjoyed this Manga Classic. I have wanted to read the Edgar Allan Poe one for awhile now and I was happy to be given a copy of it. I loved the art style of this manga series and the fact that it brought so many different artists together. Every artist caught the themes and the nature of every story or poem that they told. The stories they picked were sufficiently creepy and the artwork added more depth to these stories. This is a book I will be buying a physical copy of in the future as I loved it that much and want it in my manga collection.

Like some other comic book adaptations of classic works, this book chooses to include the full text of each story, broken down across various panels. This approach either works very well or very poorly because it's hard to take word-heavy stories by writers like Poe and put it in dialogue balloons and description panels without making the story seem overdone.
In this case, the approach works very well. Stacy King's done an excellent job of organizing the text into just the right panels for dramatic effect, and the art is consistently great throughout. The art's style varies a little between each story due to the different artists, but it always finds ways to imply more than show violence, a trick that makes the stories terrifying without being disgusting. A very artful and compelling adaptation of Poe.

I have never read anything by Edgar Allan Poe and being introduced via magna edition was a perfect way to be introduced. This is such a great way to get people that might not like reading or be the best readers to pick up a classic and read it. The artwork was amazing and I would recommend it!

Fantastic adaptation of some of Poe's greatest works! Getting kids (especially teenagers) to read standard literature is becoming difficult, and manga/graphic novels are a great way to introduce classics and help rekindle their love of reading. My favorite work in this collection was the Raven, but I really loved the artwork in the Tell-Tale Heart.

This was very cool and I've seen a few others by UDON at work, so I might pick up some more! I really loved this and thought the art was distinctly suitable to Poe's stories. I recommend it!
