tl;dr
A fairly faithful adaptation featuring several different artists with appropriately scary artwork. A great way to introduce newer readers to Poe's works.

Thoughts
I've never read the Manga Classics series before, but I always enjoy a good Poe adaptation, so I jumped at the chance to check this out. I'll refrain from reviewing the stories themselves, since it's Poe, and you probably already know if you like his work or not. (But if you don't know, Fall of the House of Usher is always a strong recommend from me.)

This book is a collection of some of his most famous works (Telltale Heart, The Raven, Cask of Amontillado, Masque of Red Death, and Fall of the House of Usher), each illustrated by a different artist. Style varies across the board, although all of the pieces have been adapted very faithfully. Telltale Heart leans into heavy use of blacks, making the nighttime sequences feel very ominous. The Raven is appropriately dreamlike in nature, with some really cool angles in the layout. Cask of Amontillado's characters are highly expressive, especially as the story goes on. Masque of Red Death is probably what most people think of when you say "manga style," with more use of tones and delicate lines that fit right in with the decadent atmosphere of the story. Fall of the House of Usher has some heavy and sometimes messy inks that really nail the gothic feeling of the story, and remind me quite a bit of a lot of the novel->comic books I used to read as a kid. A handful of character design sketches and layout thumbnails are also included, which are always a treat for art fans.

Overall, this book feels like a really great introduction to some of Poe's most famous works, with very accessible and moody art across the board.

This was a wonderful collection of some of the most well-known stories by Edgar Allen Poe. Some of the stories I was familiar with and others I read for the first time. The stories were told in a way that kept the best parts but made them accessible. They definitely stayed true to the source material. I truly enjoyed reading them! Even abbreviated in this format, the essence of the stories is there. The same spooky tone is kept and really pulled me in! The art is beautiful! The way these were drawn really enhanced the reading experience. I truly adored the artwork. This is a great way to introduce people to the classics who haven’t read them and for fans to experience the stories in a whole new way. This is a great example of gothic fiction! I definitely recommend this!

This manga gives justice to the works of Edgar Allan Poe, in the way that it contains the creepy and odd vibe of the stories.

I've been fond of Edgar Allan Poe's writing for a while, so it was interesting to see his works in this format. Manga Classics showcases some of his best known stories and I think it will leave readers engaged and intrigued throughout the panels.

That being said, it's was alright adaption. I wish it had more 'flair'.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher, for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts are my own and left voluntarily.

As a fan of Edgar Allan Poe I thought this manga collection was a really cool way to bring Poe’s work to life and offer it to readers who may not read it in its traditionally form. The illustrations were chilling and haunting perfectly matching the stories.

Stunning collection of manga and Poe adapted stories! This is definitely a unique and fun way to experience a lot of the creepy Poe tales that we've come to know and love over the year. October is a great time to dive deeper into some of these macabre stories and fully embrace all the spooky, haunting vibes. There's some luscious language and great artwork!

Oh! Those are just awesome! Edgar Allan Poe was a genius on its own, but his stories being re-told manga style take his genius and his storytelling to the next level!

Manga Classics does such a good job of bringing classic stories to reluctant readers in a way that engages them. Our ELA teacher at my school has taught Edgar Allan Poe for years, and we have even taken our team to see theater productions of Poe stories. However, some of the kids in the sixth grade class are not at a sixth grade reading level, and this would help make the story more engaging and more exciting to them. It may even inspire them to read the full stories, just because it’s all so creepy! And you know how middle schoolers LOVE creepy!!

Keep going, Manga classics. You’re doing a great job!

As a huge Edgar Allan Poe fan and was so excited to get to see some classic stories in a really unique format. Think this is a fantastic way to read classic stories in a way that is more engaging especially for younger audiences. The art really transforms the stories and complements the eeriness of his stories extremely well.

A wonderful adaptation of the classic: The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe with wonderful illustrations by Manga Classics. They adapted the story plot in such a way that it is very easy to follow and understand. But the book takes the reader through an emotional rollercoaster which went missing in manga adaption.

As someone who’s been fond of Poe’s writing for many years, it is such an interesting thing to see them taken into a different light. Graphic Novel, Manga or any other version is to some degree also interpretation. Interpretation of the artist in a sense. And I think it’s been done in a very good way. Poe’s writing and the art both seem to work well together and it was a delight to read them. Thanks to the publishing team and Netgalley for making it possible for me to read this as an ARC.

This is an average adaptation of some of Poe's most famous short stories. It's not very creative, it mostly adapts them word by word. Lots of text here - not that it's a bad thing, but when it comes to comic books and manga, I'd rather things are shown than told. It might be interesting for people who have read Poe's books and want to experience another take on them (albeit not a very different one) and for those looking for an introduction to his work. Just don't expect anything out of ordinary here.

I know that I'm probably going to sound like a broken record, and as much as I dislike doing so, the art in the Manga Classics is just SO INCREDIBLY GOOD that I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it each time. Yes, it is THAT good, and the only thing more impressive than how good it is is how consistently good it is in each MC that I've read so far.

I've read some of the original texts of this adaptation but not all of it, which made it an interesting litmus test. MC's entire premise is a difficult one, but I think Edgar Allan Poe might be one of the most difficult undertakings because so much of his work plays on the imagination, the inventions of the mind that each person does differently. With graphical cues, it's much more difficult to totally project those images yourself, and instead you're relying on someone else's interpretation, which may or may not convey the same effect. Nonetheless, I think this adaptation did a good job. If nothing else, it would whet the appetite for more.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book.

I love both Edgar Allan Poe and Manga. So I was excited when I found out about them being put together. I loved all of his stores that were picked. The Tell Tale Heart and The Mask of the Red Death are my two favorites of his so it was great to see them reimaged in manga form.

There is something deliciously macabre about seeing Edgar Allen Poe's tales come to life in manga form. I think the manga's breathe new life into the classics and make them more accessible for people to read. I might just have to add this Manga to my collection.

The illustrations are great and the stories are re-written in a nice way without losing any of the original meaning of the author.
