The theme of both being hunter and hunted is an interesting one and it permeates the plot line of this mystery novel. It also brings a level of nuance that you normally don't find in many mysteries and a level of tension that makes for a more compelling book too. I highly recommend this book for these reasons.

An engaging thriller, my first encounter with this author.

A well written book that was easy to read, with interesting characters and a plot that sweeps the reader along.

A young woman sailing solo across the Atlantic rescues a man clinging to life mid-ocean. The man whose life she saved is an Israeli assassin who forces her to sail to England. There, they are forced to run from a secret and lethal organization.

I will be reading more from this author.

Thank you to Oceanview Publishing via Netgalley for providing a digital copy of The Perfect Assassin by Ward Larsen for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

4 1/2 stars!

An intricate story of manipulation, greed, power, and so much more that will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. With the unique storyline, complex characters, a touch of romance, secrets and lies, betrayal, treason, constant danger, and intriguing twists, you'll be turning the pages faster to see what happens next. An outstanding book, and a great beginning to this exciting series!

David Slaton is a Kidon in Mossad's organization, a highly skilled assassin, but skills that he will need to survive after his latest assignment turned deadly. After floating around the ocean for an unknown amount of time, he's miraculously rescued by an American woman on her own journey. Not knowing who he can trust, finding out that his best friend is dead, and trying to figure out what happened to the cargo they were transporting, he's got more questions than answers.

He knows that once anyone figures out that he survived, they'll be coming for him. When the dead bodies start piling up, and everyone thinking that he's gone rogue and sank the ship himself, there's a massive manhunt issued for him. When things start slowly clicking into place, he starts understanding what is going on, but can't figure out what the end goal is, yet.

Will David be able to keep them both safe from the massive amount of people who are hunting them, including the bad guys? Although he still grieves for his wife and daughter, will he let down his walls, and see where the attraction between them could lead? With an outrageous story that most would never believe, can they get the inspector in charge of the case to listen to them, and keep Christine safe so he can find the missing cargo, and figure out who's behind this deadly game? You'll have to read it to find out!

I highly recommend this book, series, and great author.

A fast paced thriller, full of twists and turns, with a likeable villain as the main character. The story switched smoothly form different scenes entwining all of the main characters together.

Although this had a slow start I simply loved the interaction of the characters.
The story was exciting but fairly predictable.
Still well worth reading.

The Perfect Assassin is a really memorable espionage thriller! I was drawn into the action from the very start all while trying to figure out who exactly David Slaton was: whether he was the good guy or the bad guy, and who exactly wanted him dead. I love the unexpected twist with the dead wife and child as the impetus for the main character's actions. I hope the author seriously considers turning this book into a movie! The effects and the action would be amazing on the big screen.

This was an intense dramatic novel. A man bent on avenging his family's murder. He is unfortunately a gifted assassin, and the organization who employs him will do whatever it takes to keep him dedicated to his job. To the point of using his family's death and lies to keep him in the game. A random rescue changes the course of his life and the story that follows is riveting.

The copy I received had formatting issues and made it difficult to read by interrupting the flow of the story. I also failed to become engaged with the characters/plot therefore would prefer not to post reviews on any reputable ebook sites. Thank you for the opportunity though.

The Perfect Assassin is a tremendous meld of suspense, deep technical back story, and compelling characters. Slaton's emotional range made him very accessible, both as a father and as a patriot. I found his stoic "assassin" character to be simultaneously terrifying and fascinating. As a father, it was easy to feel his rage and his absolute despair over the loss of his family. Christine tread a very believable path from innocent bystander, to unwitting participant, to accomplice, to lover. I found her equal parts strong, independent, nurturing and empathetic.

At times there were so many tangent storylines running that it was difficult to see the whole picture, but most were long resolved by the end. I offer a special appreciation for the tying up of loose ends in the epilogue.

This is my first time reading Ward Larsen, but it will definitely not be my last.

Simply Superb. Ward Larsen certainly knows how to write an incredible Action Thriller. This was such an easy book to read, and very well written. I happy to see that the Author has continued on with David Slaton as a character into a series, as he will definitely be worth following. With South Africa’s society breaking down very quickly, and looking like civil war might break out, General Van Ruut thought it was a good idea to get the last two nuclear weapons out of the country. Since Israel had a helping hand in making the two bombs, he approached them to help him. They managed to get the nukes out of the country on a ship called the Polaris Venture, before they fell into the wrong hands. Now with the Polaris having disappeared off the radar, the Israel’s are very keen to find it. Dr Christine Palmer was quite happy sailing along when she came across what looked like some wreckage from a ship, and it didn’t take her long to spot a man floating on a piece of it. She managed to save David Slaton’s life, but it only took him a day to recover well enough to take over the boat. Christine didn’t have a choice when this strange man advised her of a course change to England. David doesn’t quite understand why the Polaris he was on was destroyed, and he wonders if someone on the inside has betrayed them. When he arrives in England to find his best friend and co-worker dead, he knows he needs to lay low and get to the bottom of why this has happened. It doesn’t take him long to realise that Christine could be in danger, and that he will need to protect her. There is no doubt there will be other agents looking for her, to find out what she knows about David, and the Polaris. After reading this book you can see why so many other readers have given the Author 5 stars for his stories, thoroughly deserving. This really is an enjoyable book from start to finish.

The book hangs together well and has the feel of one of Tom Clancy’s shorter novels. That is, a nice mix of political intrigue and daring-do action that quickly start stitching together to reveal plots within plots, and everything coming to a head.

The testy relationship between the woman whose sail boat our assassin anti-hero commandeers, essentially kidnapping her, sets us up for a nice romantic character arc as well, early on, with both parties’ fates precariously interlocked. Will he kill her when he gets to shore and doesn’t need her sailing skills anymore, or will this be the start of a longer, even more dangerous journey, with an even more uncertain end?

I liked the multi-continent angle to the story, as I’m a fan of travel lit and thrillers that take me all over the world.

Chapters are long, especially for the action-thriller genre the author is writing in. They are broken up by ellipses, however, or their equivalent, an extra paragraph break between cutaways. But you’ll need extra size time blocks to get through a chapter. That said, the chapters themselves still move very fast.

Note: despite the title, The Perfect Assassin, and despite our hero being an assassin, this really reads a lot more like a fast-paced Jack Ryan book penned by Clancy than your typical assassin book. For some people that will be a great thing, for others, the richer mix of spies, espionage, conspiracy thriller, and action thriller will be less of a win.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book, provided through NetGalley. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

An American female doctor, a Mossad agent, an international intrigue, spy world, and so on. Predictable, although as with other spy novels, we can expect a bit twist and surprises here and there. Quite enjoyable overall. However, I found the formatting was confusing. The point of view jumping from one person to another rapidly, without clear separate line, so many players, and extremely slow in the beginning.

I think I read it somewhere that this is a debut novel from the author. So, hopefully his next books are much better than this.

This book was first released back in 2006, I think. As you can see in the blurb, it’s being made into a major motion picture! I used emphasis because I expect it will be a huge hit.

I enjoyed every page of this book. There is not one single moment where the story lags or drags. High drama and action from a sea rescue on the Atlantic, car chases through London, shoot-outs a-plenty, hiding, escaping and politics! Always with politics.

Christine and David are opposites in every way. A doctor and an assassin? Yeah, no way that’s going to work, right? Wrong. She saved him from an icy grave in the cold Atlantic waters, then he saves her from killers looking for him! Like I said earlier, high drama and action. And sparks! Two amazing, attractive people on the run? It had to happen. Maybe.

Anyway, this author, Ward Larsen, wrote a terrific book. I hope the movie is as good. My advise would be to read the book first, because you’ll want to see the movie. There are a lot of great characters besides the protagonists. Pick up a copy now and…
Enjoy!
