This was a brilliant read. As soon as I started reading this book I just knew I was going to love it. Highly recommended

So late with placing reviews. Your typical murder investigation. I did like the character build up and would read the second book in the series once released. I did enjoy the .relationship between Alton and Kane.

When a body is discovered in a barrel, Detective Jenna Alton and her new Deputy David Kane rush to the scene. When David Kane applied for this position he thought it would be laid back because there’s no major crimes in a small town, right? Wrong! Another person missing and death threats being sent to the lead Detective things get very heated.
This book had me suspecting every one, D.K. Hood set up each character with just enough of a hint of doubt that as a reader I was on each one certain that they were the culprit. I am really looking forward to reading the next books in the series as I have a feeling that both of the main characters pasts will come back to haunt them……so no pressure D.K. Hood!!!

I was eager to start a new series.
This authors books I’ve read before so I settled down to start.

The plot is exceedingly written well, however I did guess beforehand but still enjoyed reading until the end.

There were a few things in here that didn’t logically compute in my brain.

I thought and thought, just who was the grown up here at times. Jenna seemed a bit immature.
And then some other thoughts regarding the young folk in the bars.

On the whole it was an ok read.
I’m hoping the series gets stronger.

Though it has been awhile since I finished this book, I remember it quite well, and that is rather unusual for me (in one door, out the other...unless it's a superb read, and even then...my brain is like a sieve).

The mystery was quite good. There was a point, prior to the actual reveal, at which I knew exactly who the perpetrators were, but it was far enough along that I wasn't bothered about it, and it in no way detracted from the unraveling of the story. The tension was adequate and consistent, and in no way disappointing.

The primary reason(s) for this being a 3 star rating instead of 4 star (or even a 3.5!)? One, the relationship development between Kane and Alton was a bit formulaic and clunky. I could see it coming, but I didn't feel it, so I didn't really care. Two, the way Jenna's character was written was irksome. It felt inauthentic, stereotypical, and a bit sexist, if I'm being honest (and yes, I know the author is a woman). There was a lack of maturity in the development of both characters that just didn't sit well with me. They were two dimensional.

In the end, the mystery was quite good, and the character and relationship development fell short for me. However, I'd be interested in reading the next in the series to see if those elements get stronger. There is definitely a lot of potential here.

Took me a while to get to grips with both Kane and Alton, but once their dynamic was created really enjoyed the book. They're both strong characters, and the creation of their cautious relationship is well written.

This was a good book. The thread of Kane's story kept me reading and may have me reaching for book 2.

Not my usual cup of tea but I really enjoyed the relationship between the two main characters. The main thing I didn’t like was the classic ‘female puts herself in peril’, this time from a supposedly finely trained officer.

I have had the privilege of reading all 3 books in the trilogy courtesy of Netgalley. Since I've read all 3 one after the other, I will review them all together. They were so brilliant, I can't distinguish between anyone !
In Don't tell a soul we meet Sheriff Alton. A kickarse lady, that has a secret that she could tell you, but then she would have to hurt you.... no puns intended. Through into the mix a handsome, quiet and secretive new deputy named Kane. He also has his own secrets.... The chemistry between them was entertaining. In this book they have to deal with missing persons. Something that seldom happens in their sleepy town.....
The story continues in Bring me flowers. A new deputy has been appointed at the station. He also seems to have his own secrets..... This book made me question all around me, because the killer I did not see coming.......
The story continued once again in Follow me home. The relationship between Jenna and Dave is continuously entertaining and I just couldn't wait to finish the book.
I hope from the bottom of my heart that will be a fourth book!!!!

Deputy David Kane and Sheriff Jenna Alton are both trying to hide from the secrets buried in their past and hoping for a quiet, calm life in small town Black Rock Falls. But the quiet is shattered when a body is discovered dumped in a barrel at a garbage dump. With another person missing and Jenna receiving life threats, David and Jenna have to race against time to find a killer who might be closer than they think.

Don’t Tell a Soul by D.K.Hood is the first book in Detective David and Sheriff Jenna’s police procedural series. It is a fast paced crime thriller book with well developed strong likable characters. An entertaining , enjoyable read and I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

2.5 stars rounded off to 3

I must be honest in saying that this was not the best of detective stories in my opinion. I do see that it has many good reviews, so maybe it's just me. It is the first book in the series so I'm hoping that it might improve as it goes along. The main gripe for me was the characters especially the female lead. She tried to act like a tough female officer but sometimes she just came across as a helpless female.

I will look out for the second book in the series and see if I like it better.

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

David Kane is in witness protection as the new deputy sheriff in Montana, he has plenty secrets to hide. Sheriff Alton also has reasons of her own for remaining aloof and distant. They are determined to solve the case of missing people and a body found.

This really seemed to drag for me and I love police procedure but I struggled somewhat.

The floor was stone cold on her bare skin. Her heart pounded in her chest. ‘Not a soul knows where I am,’ she thought as she took in the darkness around her. And then she heard his footsteps…
When a body is found stuffed into a barrel at a garbage dump, covered in long red cuts, Detective Jenna Alton and her new deputy, David Kane, rush to the scene.
Nothing ever happens in the small American town of Black Rock Falls, so Jenna believes the victim must be one of two recent missing persons, and she fears for the life of the other.
Both were strangers to the town, but there’s nothing else to link them. Jenna knows someone must have seen something, but no one’s talking; how well does she really know the people around her?
Then a disturbing clue makes Jenna suspect a connection with other disappearances in the town’s history. Just when she begins asking the right questions, she realises she’s being followed. Is she next on the killer’s list?
In a race against time, Jenna and David must unlock the dark secret at the heart of the town, before it’s too late…

A great detective crime thriller! First of all, we loved Detective Jenna Alton! She’s a strong, confident, no nonsense woman!! If you like Detective Crime Thrillers that leave you guessing until the end, this is the one for you!!!
D.K. Hood’s style of writing is fast paced and she gives away just enough plot twists to keep you guessing. We enjoyed this book and look forward to more from this author!

The description of the murders were quite brutal and upsetting. The two main characters were good together, I also liked the description of the town which was very interesting, not knowing anything about small towns like that. Well done here’s to the next one of the series.

This is my first experience of DK Hood and their writing, and it definitely won't be my last! I love the slightly damaged, closed off, but yet drawn to each other main characters, the mystery was well written, Great! Hurry with the next one please?

This is a fantastic serial killer novel that takes place in a small town. With limited resources, Sheriff Alton and her new deputy, Kane, must track down the killer before more victims are taken. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I received this book through Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Netgalley.com, to Bookouture, and to D.K. Hood for this opportunity.

After a disappointing couple of reads I am so glad the next book I picked up was Don’t Tell a Soul because it was a great read and I am excited that this is the start of a series. I enjoyed my time with Kane and Alton and can’t wait to read more from them. They are two fantastically created characters, multi-layered and still with so much to be revealed about them, both to each other and to the reader.

The setting in Don’t Tell a Soul is great. I love those small town American settings and this one takes place in the freezing cold town of Black Rock Falls which was very easy to visualise in my mind, and some cold weather in the UK of late helped me to feel the cold also. The small town setting was used to full effect, both in terms of how the residents behave and how it was used to add fear to the story, as I read I became completely caught up in the events and could imagine myself inside the story witnessing the events unfolding from a freezing cold corner of the town.

Character wise and we have two really well created characters in David Kane and Jenna Alton. A few years ago I loved reading Karen Rose because of the romantic suspense element of her novels, some of that is present here between Kane and Alton but it’s very toned down. Both characters have secrets and are somewhat standoffish, but it’s clear that there’s some kind of connection between them and that this is something the author plans on exploring in future books. I like that it’s a bit of a slow burner as the two characters get to know each other, learn to trust each other and find belief in themselves that they can find a happy ever after after everything they have been through in their lives. Had they been ripping each other’s clothes off before the book ended and my rating and opinion of the author would be much lower. I pictured the characters as Ash and Kat from Home and Away, another couple (well, sadly no longer a couple) who have great chemistry as do Kane and Alton.

As the focus wasn’t so much on the romance that allowed the author to really create a gripping tale that had me guessing until the end. It’s just the type of story you’d expect to read in a small town setting and whilst similar tales have been told before, the author does put their own spin on things here and I enjoyed following along in the investigation and trying to work things out myself. Unfortunately I didn’t work out who was responsible for the murders however when it was revealed it wasn’t any great surprise and I was kicking myself for not working it out sooner. In terms of how the investigation was ran it was intriguing to witness how Kane and Alton worked. At times Kane almost came across as the authority figure and was often appearing to tell Alton what to do, thankfully she wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself when needed however there were a few times when it was a little damsel in distress/knight in shining armour but other than that Jenna was a fantastically strong character it was just that Alton was written very strongly too and had this air of power about him and really if you were a woman I think you’d want to be protected by him (or as a gay man but sadly Kane is 100% straight...)

Ultimately this is the start of what will hopefully be a really enjoyable series. D.K. Hood has written an engrossing tale that has had me gripped over the past 24 hours. There’s little to find fault with here and if you are fans of the crime genre looking for something a little different, whether that be in terms of setting or characters (and the reason they both found themselves living in the arse end of nowhere) then you’d do well to pick up Don’t Tell a Soul. I hope the wait for book two isn’t too far away and I can’t wait to see what the author has planned for Kane and Alton.
