This is the ninth novel in the Detective D.D. Warren series and what a treat it was. It was a fast moving, exciting and intriguing murder mystery, full of clues, red herrings, blind alleys and desperation. It was a veritable feast of thrills and spills for lovers of the crime genre
The story starts with the massacre of four members of Roxy’s family whilst she is thought to be out walking her dogs. But is this the truth or is it a lie? Before the case can be solved, Roxy must be found, because she is on the run, leaving her beloved two dogs tied up to a shady tree with a note tucked under their collars, saying who would be the best person to care for them. Is this the act of a terrified teenager fleeing for her life or is she an evil murderer who has taken flight to avoid arrest?
Homicide detective D.D. Warren is assigned to the case and quickly makes a plan of action. She is brave, determined, intelligent and highly respected. She will do all that is in her power to bring the crazed, merciless murderer to justice. Also investigating the crime is Flora Dane who has been advising and helping Roxy through her recent troubling times. Flora is a kidnap survivor and mentor to others who have been through the same trauma as herself, including her friend Sarah, who is more than willing to help out. Flora is a vigilante, determined to help people in trouble, especially the missing Roxy. She offers her help to Detective D.D. Warren, who sees the sense in taking Flora on as a partner Crime Investigator, under the advice and leadership of herself.
So the investigation continues with headway soon being made by the investigative team. Roxy leaves a trail of clues for her quarries, but are they designed to be helpful or misleading? I loved the incisive fast paced storytelling and the skilfully crafted characterisation in this emotional rollercoaster. There were plenty of contenders with persuasive motives for the massacre but one by one they were dismissed. It’s a real game of cat and mouse throughout the novel but the finale is totally awesome. I’ve read almost all of Lisa Gardner’s novels and I love the way she takes care of her readers, always neatly tying up the loose ends and leaving the reader happy and satisfied. I always know that I am in safe hands, absorbed in the story until the very end, avidly turning the pages and enjoying the intelligent and masterly art of her plot.

This is the 9th book in the Detective D.D. Warren Series by author Lisa Gardner and the 4th book I have read in this series. My enjoyment was not spoilt by reading it out of order or by missing out other books in the series.

A page turner that delivers, recommended.

I should by saying I am a Lisa Gardner fan & have read all her previous novels. I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to read this on before publication.
You are reintroduced to Detective DD Warren and would be vigilante Flora Dane who was introduced to the reader in the previous novel ‘Find her’.
The premise is a family murdered but with the 16year old daughter is missing. Is the daughter a suspect or a would be victim?
I like the two strong female characters of DD and Flora who want the same thing but use very different methods to get there.
Highly recommend as I read it in one sitting!

An absolutely incredibly heartbreaking read from one of my favourite authors. Brilliantly portrayed and very informative on a situation that needs to be more widely recognised (foster care)

The characters were great but D.D Warren’s attitude toward people was a little forceful and wasn’t like a police person should be like but it was only in places.

I loved the twists and turns and the reveal at the end. I loved the guessing ‘who did it’ I didn’t guess right once!!

As always, this author has delivered an amazing book that I’d happily read again in the future. Highly recommended.

So it wasnt a favourite of mine but im still glad I got to read this. The story just didnt have enough going on and was a bit flat at times. My attention wasnt caught up in it and I wasnt really a fan of Flora. Some will be, others wont and I guess I just fall into that second category. But, with the negatives out of the way (mostly), there were parts I really enjoyed such as Roxanna's story, her writting called, 'What Is The Perfect Family?' Her diary style entries were really good. I kept holding out waiting for the next part to come. For me, that was the most interesting part of this book. The prologue was also good. It got me excited about reading this, and finding out what happens next. Unfortunately that is all we really get, a short few pages of background history of one of the main characters, Sarah. Still, it was good and did the trick. Would I re read this, probably not. Recommend it? Yeah sure. Because while this is my opion of the book, that doesnt mean you wont like it and I know Lisa Gardner has a huge fan base so yeah, give it a go. Im still going to be trying her other books so I will look out for more from her.

This story was superb, the action just never stopped and you could never guess what was going to happen next. I love the characters of Flora and DD they work really well together. This will keep you turning those pages all night. Who did shoot the family and why?

Lisa Gardner is such a competent writer of detective novels and has managed to avoid some of the more common tropes. (DD Warren is rather less 'flawed' than many other detectives which I appreciate.)

Another pitfall which Gardner avoids, and which has ruined Chris Carter's novels, is the endless retelling of past plots which offers little more than lazy page-filling. Gardner keeps things moving forward and makes you work a little when it comes to guessing whodunnit and, more importantly, why.

All in all, Gardner writes pacey, intelligent detective procedurals with female characters who aren't complete f*ck-ups. Their trials and tribulations are relatable (motherhood, job stress, competing with men) without descending into lazy stereotype.

The book starts by describing the slaughter of a family in their home and the fact that the family's teenage daughter is missing. Is the missing teenager a witness to the shooting, a suspect or a victim?
I loved this book. I have been waiting for what seems like an age for the next Lisa Gardner novel and I actually believe that this is one of her best yet.
We revisit DD in this installment and best of all are reunited with kidnap survivor, Flora Dean. This adds an incredible twist to an already gripping story. Having touched on the return of well loved characters, this book could still be read by a first time reader of Gardner and would stand alone well.
Highly recommend this book and I really hope Flora becomes a regular character in the future.

Another her great Flora Dane and DD Warren book. Survior Flora is out there helping other girls who have been a “victim”.
A family of 3 children and their mother go through so much as a young family with an alcoholic mother. Put into foster care, the cildren have o cope whilst mum is getting clean for them. She wins the battle, but what her girls have gone through in foster care, changes all their lives forever.
Flora and DD team up in the chase to find Roxanne after her family is killed. Did she do it or is she running for her life.
Great book. Well done Lisa Gardener. Can’t wait for the next one.

I have read all this authors books and while some authors get complacent on their success this is definitely not true of this one the story line was compulsive reading the background research used was amazing I'm not American but I believed I was in Brighton with its over streached social care failing the most vulnerable of society its children thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this I would off read it anyway but it was nice to read before publication

Detective D.D Warren is one of the first on the scene, and she unravels a complex world of drugs, teenage gangs, bullying and abuse.
Is the missing girl a victim or a killer? A target or the one targeting victims? We are also reunited with Flora Dane the main character in Lisa’s previous novel Find Her still a vigilante, Flora is determined she can help in this investigation. One victim to another. She’s essentially like a female version of Liam Neeson in Taken.

I must say that I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I usually do with Lisa’s novels. The storyline felt a little bit weak and the split perspectives meant that I didn’t feel I got enough D.D as I would have liked. There was far more focus on Flora and I think Lisa intends to develop her further as a character in future books based on what I’ve read in Look For Me. I think this story would have worked better with less Flora and more D.D, she’s the feisty detective we all know and love but it felt like she barely did anything in this novel because Flora did everything instead.

However, the storyline was interesting although not my complete cup of tea in a crime novel, I don’t generally like action packed, drugs or gangs. Slow burners are more my thing but I love Lisa Gardner’s novels and being a bit disappointed with this one won’t put me off reading more from her in future.

This was a very enjoyable read with many twists and turns. The storyline was many different threads coming together at the end to show who the killer was. I would recommend this book and the author for anyone who enjoys the human sides of crime fiction.

I loved this fast paced thriller, it had plenty of twists to keep me hooked. A real page turner. Highly recommended.

A gripping thriller about the murder of 4 people and a missing girl who leaves clues that need to be solved, whether she is a suspect or victim is left to the detectives to work out. Interesting and full of twists.
