Mary Elizabeth Francis Catherine Ashdown, Baroness Worthington aka Cat is in a bind, her father has died and though she has inherited the barony and the estates, her father put everything in trust naming her uncle Henri Wycomb (yes, the same one from the previous book) as her guardian and a trustee.  Cat is stymied at every turn by her uncle and he is pushing her to marry - in fact he has selected her groom and signed the contracts.  If she refuses, she will lose Ashdown Abbey.

But things seem to be going from bad to worse for Cat, she is attacked outside a shop and is saved by Jones.  Jones is on a mission that involves her uncle, he had no desire to reveal himself to her, but when she catches him in her uncles study later, he has no choice and they come to an agreement, that he will keep her informed and she will feed him information.

The more they meet, the deeper their bond becomes, but Wycomb is up to something and Cat is not safe.  Jones is falling for her, but knows nothing can come of it, yet he can't seem to walk away from her.

Cat knows she loves Jones, loves him enough to walk away from her legacy - but he won't let her.  When Cat is abducted and Wycomb's scheme is revealed, will it be too late for Jones to save the  woman he loves?  And is he finally ready to accept that Cat loves him enough to walk away from her inheritance?

The book is well written, but there are a couple of formal address mistakes and as in the last book it is still being referred to as "Carleton House" instead of Carlton House.  The love scenes are on the warm side, but in no way graphic or steamy.  Readers who were dismayed with Wycomb in the last book will be overjoyed to see him get his comeuppance in this book and to revisit The Flower, Shadow & Angel as well as their spouses and growing families.  The book is action packed and has a bit of mystery that is very well done.  The ending was not what I was expecting and personally, I think Cat was overly forgiving, but I was happy with the ending and enjoyed the epilogue.

Jones is a spy for the Crown.  His assignment this time is to watch one of their own who has come under suspicion.  To investigate a fellow spy without him knowing is a major problem.  
Mary Elizabeth Ashdown,  Baroness Worthington is one of the wealthiest people in England.  Unfortunately because she is still underage she doesn't have control if it.  Her uncle is one if the trustees of her estate and he is being very difficult to deal with.  
This is an intrigue filled story loaded with danger.  Our characters have people relying on them to do the right thing.  Our hero had a very rough start in life and still sees himself as unworthy of better . His work for England is vital to him as much as to the Crown. Our heroine knows she could do a better job of administering her estates that the trustees, but a Lady in her position must do as she is told. Or must she?
This is part of a series but each book can be read on it´s own. 
I loved it.

Cat and Jones become intertwined when he rushes to save Cat and his position is compromised. Unbeknownst to Cat Jones is investigating her uncle but as Jones keeps on appearing to save her the truth of his investigation is revealed they decide to work together to reveal her uncles evil duplicity. The more they work together the more their feelings deepen for each other. Jones has fallen for Cat but feels unworthy for a woman of Cats status. Their attraction is unavoidable although Jones tries to keep his distance their lives and hearts become even more intertwined with Cats life in peril and a traitorous spy to capture.

A well written story with an intelligent heroine not afraid to fight for what is right. The story flows well will keep you glued to the pages, you have intrigue, spies, a villainous plot for murder, kidnapping and dangerous situations. A hero who will do anything for the damsel in distress even though she’s everything he’s ever wanted but so out of his reach. So many twists and turns and passionate encounters between Cat and Jones makes this an exciting gripping must read story.

This book is part of a series by Alyssa Alexander but this book can be a stand alone read.  What could possibly happen when the rookeries meets the wealthy?  A wonderful story that will keep your attention captured until the last page!  Baroness "Cat" Ashdown has been born and raised in one of the most powerful rich families in England and trained to take over the family fortune and barony title.  When her father dies, she realizes that she has not  been given control over anything.  Her ruthless Uncle has been given guardianship over her until she turns 35 or marries  That includes the all the money and estates being controlled by her crooked uncle.  Determined to find a solution she meets Mr Jones who is a spy for the crown.  Jones has no title, no heritage but is the most decent, honorable man that always pushes for justice and doing the right thing.  As her uncle tries to force her into marriage to the highest bidder, Cat and Jones's world's collide and they set a course to help each other.  Jones has his sights on a fellow spy and trying to bring some information to light and save Cat from her forced marriage.  As these two characters from such different worlds begin to work together, intrigue and secrets begin to come out and danger lurks just around the corner.  The author brings Cat and Jones alive with her descriptions and wonderful writing style.  You will not be able to put this one down until you find out what awaits our hero and heroine!!

A well written page turning book that kept my interest all the way though, the pace was very good & the plot riveting. The characters were well developed, Cat & Jones were very likeable, their attraction is apparent from their first encounter & the more they meet each other the stronger it grows. This book could be read as a stand alone book. Characters from previous books do appear & this added to my enjoyment. The road to their HEA isn’t an easy one with Wycomb becoming more sinister & deadly throughout the book, there are twists & turns along the way. The Gents are delightful,  pair of boots bringing lots of joy. I loved the book & look forward to more from the author

Jones had a hard childhood until he was taken to be a trained as a spy and he has become one of the best...but he hasn't forgotten where he came from.  Jones is working a case on another spy, which leads him to save Cat.

This was an exciting story line with spies, mystery and love that is meant to be.  I so enjoyed their story!!!

While I really enjoyed the plot of this book, I cared more about what would happen to the heroine and her inheritance than I did the relationship. Full review coming!

The Lady and Mr Jones by is the fourth book in Alyssa Alexander’s Spy in the Ton Series. This was the first book of the series that I’ve read and I had no issues with following along with the story.

Born in the rookeries, Jones, rescued from a dismal life as a young boy was trained to be an elite spy. His latest assignment, though, has him tracking Lord Wycombe, a fellow spy who is believed to have gone rogue.

Elizabeth Frances Catherine Ashdown, Baroness Worthington, who prefers to go by Cat, commands the largest income in Britain. Dismayed her father placed her inheritance in trust and left her care to her uncle, who is forcing her to marry. Cat is unaware of her Uncle’s secret life as a spy or of the danger this places her in.

Jones rescues Cat from a would-be attacker, sent as a warning to her uncle. On discovering her uncle’s hidden life, Cat agrees to help Jones uncover evidence of Lord Wycombe’s duplicity.

Cat is a strong, intelligent heroine, who takes her responsibilities seriously. She knows she has a duty to care for all those who depend on her for their livelihood. Jones is a man of honour and integrity. Jones is all too aware of the impossible chasm of class between them. Their struggle to resist the inevitable attraction between them is realistic. The plot is well crafted and there is a good balance of intrigue, action and love.

In an unusual heritage, Cat Ashdown is a Baroness through the Ashdown line of her family with one of the wealthiest fortunes in England.  The Lady and Mr. Jones is of a spy who was taken from the rookeries, trained to spy for the Crown.  The Lady side is the Baronness, Cat.  They are brought together with Cat being the niece of a spy who has gone bad.  Her Uncle Wycomb is in debt quite deeply to some really bad guys.  Jones has been assigned to find out what is going on with Wycomb and what is the cause of his suspicious behavior.  Cat and Jones literally bump into each other and have other contact thoroughly compromising Jones as a spy.  

Since Jones and Wycomb are both spies, they both are very good as sneakiness and fighting.  But, Jones knows something is not quite right.  Cat, at first, does not realize how bad things are for her uncle.  It does not take long to realize she is his bargaining chip and that is all that is saving her from being hurt by him.  Cat and Jones develop a relationship and connection quickly.  Jones knows he has to protect Cat while using her to help him gain inside information on Wycomb. 

While all of the ‘spying’ going on, Wycomb insists Cat marry his friend, Hedgewood.  Cat quickly realizes Hedgewood is not a nice man, either.  Her goal is to protect her heritage from her uncle, then from Hedgewood.  

Secondary characters in the form of the ‘gents’ show the caring side of Jones.  He uses them as informants, but also takes care of them.  He sees the three, young boys as a reflection of himself at their age.  They are rather cute in how they treat Cat.

With some difficulty, our hero and heroine reached their HEA.  Throughout the book, Cat knew she had to marry Hedgewood due to the contract her uncle signed.  He truly bargained away her inheritance.  And, Jones did not believe he fit into her world.  Thus, he did not feel he could marry her and be part of her world.
 
You will find this to be a book you can read as a stand alone, although Ms. Alexander has other spies involved who were in previous books.  Not having read those books, enough detail was provided to satisfy this one as a stand alone.

Jones was abandoned as a baby at a foundling hospital and growing up in the rookeries doing whatever needed to survive, he has a burning need to be someone of worth and who makes a difference. An encounter as a boy with an Agent on assignment in the rookeries gives him that chance and so he finds his mentor. 

Jones is my fav kind of hero. A man of honour and integrity. The most trustworthy of spies in service, he is The Spy who is called upon to spy on the other spies – whenever there is ever a hint of an agent gone rouge or a weakening in the ranks for whatever reason.

Cat is the niece of his latest assignment investigating a senior spy (her uncle) who comes under suspicion. He blows his cover right from the 1st when he steps in to save her when she is attacked. When Cat discovers him yet again while searching her uncle’s study, he has no choice but to explain (to some extent) his assignment as they both seek to unearth her uncle’s activities.

Cat is a wonderful, strong, intelligent heroine. Brought up by compassionate, loving parents who instilled in her the love of her heritage & duty, she works fiercely in always looking after her estates and tenants, even though thwarted by her uncle – her guardian - & the trustees of her inheritance who put profit over people.

The connection between Jones and Cat was wonderfully intense. All the more poignant due to the impossible chasm of class between them. Not that Cat cares, but something Jones is all too cognizant of & while he fights it, (being the honorable man he is!) he still falls hard and heavy.

The story just pulled me along with its intensity, I could hardly put it down. The author’s writing is wonderful. She creates characters I fall in love with, a heroine you want to be and a hero you wish was your real life hero. NOT a book to start just before bedtime on a working day.

Wow, what a powerful novel! Adventure, espionage, love and heartbreak, this one has got it all. The characters are absolutely enchanting and I am in love with the hero and the heroine of the book. Both of them are extremely strong, loving and honorable. I loved their story and their struggle to a HEA.

Alyssa Alexander’s fourth book in "A Spy in the Ton" series, follows Cat Ashdown who has been groomed to take on the role of Baroness. However, her father’s will has led to her uncle Wycombe, overseeing her fortune and forcing a marriage upon her. Wycombe has ulterior motives and his dealings with criminals find Cat’s life threatened. Jones, a spy who has been ordered to investigate Wycombe, intervenes and it is then that Jones’ role becomes complicated. 
What sets this novel apart from many romance novels centred around that of the spy and a heroine, is that rather present the male as all-knowing, Jones is very humble. He realises that his status as a foundling puts him out of reach of Cat and tries desperately to avoid a romance. Cat, is not the typical heroine in the spy novel, and sees the goodness in Jones, trusting him from the start.
This was a beautifully written story and will resonate with the reader after the last page is read. 
“Need? I don’t need a man. I want one. I want a man who will stand by me. One who loves me. A man with shoulders strong enough to bear any responsibility and a nobility that would put any gentleman I know to shame. I would share what I have with him”.

After reading Alyssa Alexander’s The Lady and Mr. Jones, the third in her A Spy in the Ton series, I find myself rushing to read her first two. Fantastic concept, suspenseful, action-filled, total immersion in the era, and most of all, richly drawn characters that pull the reader deep into their inner lives. Cat Ashdown, a baroness and owner of one of the largest and oldest landholdings in England, doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty, my kind of heroine. And my heart breaks for Jones, the spy who loves her. Born in the rookeries, he knows he can protect her life, but can never be equal to her love.

This is my favorite book in the series. I loved the feisty fiery Cat Ashdown. Mr. Jones is the perfect foil for her. The adventure, action, and forbidden  romance make this book hard to put down.

This is the third book in this series that I have read (need to get book 2 with Angel since he shows up in the other stories). After the last book I was unsure about continuing the series. While I liked the last book, I did not love it. This book was very good. Cat is a spitfire and I loved how she did not care what others thought and went after what she wanted and was not afraid to say no. Jones, what can you say, I loved him in the last book and in this one too. He is caring and always wants to do the right thing. Their love story develops over the book and it makes the ending all the more special. Oh yeah, the spy story is good too!

I'm wavering between 3 1/2 and 4 stars for this. I liked the story line and loved Cat. She knew her own mind and wasn't afraid to state it. She was smart enough to know when to be afraid. Jones was a good hero, but there's so much I didn't like. I would have liked to know more about him as far as a backstory and more of a name. Their situation at the end didn't really give me closure for this couple.

Alyssa Alexander is a new author to me.  Her book, The Lady and Mr. Jones was a fun read with new characters to enjoy. Cat Ashdown has always helped take care of her legacy; lots of land and tenants.  She cared for the land and the people and wanted nothing more to continue to take care of them, however, her father left her saddled with no power to take care of her people.  Her uncle made the decisions and even determined who she would marry.  Cat began to disobey her uncle - much to his disgust and things become harder for her.  Enter Mr Jones who is a spy tracking down a traitor and a spy.  He rushes in to help Cat, but tries to keep distance between them due to his birth.

The Lady and Mr. Jones is one of a series called A Spy in the Ton.  It is the fourth in the series, but I read it as a stand alone and enjoyed it.  I found it hard to put down and did not want to leave the book before the end.  It was a “goodread”.

I really enjoyed the romance between Jones and Cat. I liked that Cat was not a typical society girl and had some humility. She never looked down on Jones due to his lesser societal standing. She also was a fighter and the way she stood up to the villain in many different situations made me admire her. I liked how protective Jones was of Cat and the chemistry that the two characters had.  This story was a page turner for me and is one that I'd recommend!

Her Uncle Wycomb is her guardian until she turns 21 and he's pushing her to marry his choice, but Cat wants to marry for love. What Cat doesn't know is Wycomb is one of the Crown's spies, but he's being investigated by another spy, Jones, at the orders of his superior. When Cat accidentally stumbles across Jones, she feels an instant connection with him. The more time she spends with him, the more she wants from him, but her uncle is using more than words to make Cat comply with his choice of husbands.

Ms. Alexander weaves a powerful story of want, desire, friendship and love. I loved Jones, a man so honorable, that only he cannot accept he could deserve to be with someone of Cat's station. He's a complicated character and the more I know out about him, the more I was rooting for him and Cat to end up together. The story is so much more than just about Cat and Jones. The story reunites previous characters and Cat's uncle Wycomb, a man who is being turned by greed. I love Ms. Alexander's writing and anxiously await the next book in the series.
