I've seen this book advertised as a mix between Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic. While I can see a bit of each of those in this story, both of those movies/book were so much better. While The Wicked Deep was still a good quick read, I feel like I was expecting more witch craft from it. Throughout the story it's stated that the sisters were not witches and did not do witch craft. To me they almost seemed more like sirens than witches, which was disappointing. The "love" story was ok. Sort of your typical YA supernatural love story with a little twist. I saw it coming but other may not. I feel like the reason the sisters/town were cursed was never fully stated. I also feel like certain character's stories were left in a weird place at the end. Overall though, the story was entertaining and fun. I read it in a day, no problem. With all the drinking in it I don't think I can take it on my Jr. High book talks though. |
This was pretty alright, not great just alright. The plot was pretty cool and definitely had a Hocus Pocus feel to it. What really bugged me was the romance. It was 100% insta-love, which I hate. I enjoyed the writing, for the most part. The only parts I didn't like were when the author was writing the romantic scenes. It was just way too over the top, for every kiss and every time they looked into each other's eyes. I found myself rolling my eyes every time I had to read about this relationship. Perhaps, if I had read this when I was 15 or 16 I would have enjoyed it more. The only reason I didn't put the book down half way through was because there was a great twist that I was not expecting. After about the half way point things pick up and are a lot less cringey. Overall, this is a pretty average paranormal romance with an interesting plot. |

Absolutely riveting. I couldn't stop reading once I started. I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review. |
