This story begins with a burnt skull with a bullet hole wrapped in a nice package with and including a two-sided mirror being left on Eve Duncan's front porch. Because her fey and precocious six-year-old Michael encourages her to restore the skull so that the victim can find her way home, Eve begins something that will lead to incredible danger. Then the story switches to Cara at school with her new roommate former child star Darcy Nichols. Cara is wishing to visit Eve, Joe and Michael and angsting over her relationship with Jock Gavin who has been out of touch for some months. Cara is also planning her usual month with her Russian mafia grandfather Sergei Kaskov which makes Jock and her family uneasy. When her rooms are broken into in New York, she takes Darcy and goes back to stay with Eve for a while leaving Jock to investigate. Cara's relationship with Jock is changing. She's eighteen now and not the traumatized eleven-year-old that Jock rescued. They've had years of being best friends but now she is starting to feel grown-up feeling around him. Jock is a former assassin who feels that Cara can do better and he's been waiting for years to find some more appropriate for her to love. When they get to Eve's, they are all surprised and upset to find that the skull belongs to Darcy's secret twin sister. She was brain-damaged at birth and Darcy's mother blackmailed Darcy to work in show business to earn the money to provide her sister with the kind of care she needed while forbidding her to visit her. However, they do have a twin mental communication which they could use to get around their mother's rules. Only, the twin Sylvie dropped off Darcy's mental radar a couple of months before and now Darcy knows why. The villain has set up a complex plot to get revenge on Eve, Cara, and Cara's grandfather leaving Darcy as collateral damage. It will be up to Eve, Joe, Jock, and Kaskov with Cara, Michael and Darcy's help to defeat the villain before he can complete his plot. This was well-written. I enjoyed the fast pace of the story and the relationships between the characters. I like that Cara is part of a family formed by love rather than blood relationships. I liked her growing and changing relationship with Jock. |
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Shattered Mirror by Iris Johansen that I read and reviewed. This was another excellent Eve Duncan book. This book had a lot of Eve, Joe, their son Michael, Cara and Jock in it so it was awesome having so many characters that we have grown to love throughout the series in this book. I really loved how Cara has grown up in this book and how her feelings for Jock are finally explored a bit more. I can't wait until the book comes out that is dedicated to them and their relationship. It has been a long time coming. As for this book it was a great Eve Duncan story with her protecting her family at all cost. With this series having as many books as it does it blows my mind how Johansen still can write about Eve and her family and keep it fresh but she still does and all of her books are excellent reads and I personally can't get enough of Eve Duncan. Shattered Mirror gets five out of five stars. |
Once more, I am lured deep into Eve Duncan's deadly world. The dead Speak to,her in terms of their bones. Eve Duncan can take bones and reconstruct them in a way that shows who or what they were before they ended up dead. I love that about Eve. Now, Eve is a mother and a wife. She's being targeted by a killer. The killer doesn't like Eve and the way she's handling everything. It bothers the killer until the killer feels only rage and hatred. Because Eve is upsetting the killer, her little boy becomes the target. From there her world spins out of control. Iris Johansen's latest novel, Shattered Mirror, is the most intriguing mystery I've read. The suspense builds up into an intense atmosphere. There was plenty of action to keep me guessing and keep me hooked. Mystery, murder, and chaos are found in this new thriller. I absolutely loved it. Overall, I highly recommend this Eve Duncan novel. |

Shattered Mirror by Iris Johansen has strong family relationships, along with the mystery and suspense elements. What it does not have is Jane and her boyfriend from the last book in the series. This one centers on Eve, her husband, son and Cara while at home in Atlanta. The psychic mystical element is prominent in this book, so it is far from realistic. That is not to say that it is not a pleasure to read. It also has so many twists and turns, with some very unexpected twists in the story. There is also the introduction of new characters when there is already plenty. For new readers to the series this might be confusing or perhaps not at all. It is a plot that focuses on the intrigue and suspense more than the action. Having the twin revelation added the element of surprise in the plot, which I found to be fascinating. The evil and vile villain is not as easy for them to find and stop, making it a page-turner. Fan of psychological thrillers will love Shattered Mirror. |
Eve Duncan doesn't disappoint! This was another phenomenal installment in the Duncan series. Loved it from the very beginning to the end! |
I’ve literally been reading books from this author since I was 13 and almost 20yrs year later she never disappoints. The book shows you what family and love is about. The family you depend on sometimes are your friends. I loved the ending it gives you something to look forward to. If you enjoy a good thriller this book is for you. |
Thank you NetGalley and St. martens Press for the ARC SHATTERED MIRROR by Iris Johansen is the number 23 in the Eve Duncan series. I have read all of the Eve Duncan books and could not but the book down. This one is no different. Cara and Darcy are roommates at a famous performing arts school. They both have their inner secrets, but have become as close as sisters. What they don't know is their families are in the cross hairs of the killer? Eve lives in the lake house with her husband Joe and 6 year old son Michael. Being a forensic sculptor, she is not surprised when she finds that someone has left her a gold box with a skull inside. The nightmare for her and her family begins. |

Wonderful book with suspense and character development leaving me wanting more. I enjoyed learning about the past history of a few of the characters. There are surprising twists that make reading a mystery fun and unpredictable. |
Eve Duncan receives a package on her porch, a burned skull that she feels compelled to restore. But dark forces are operating not far from her home and soon everyone she loves is under the threat of a mad killer seeking revenge. This is by far the best Eve Duncan book that I have ever read! The characters are realistic and portrayed with great emotion and detail. The man who is trying to destroy Eve and her family is diabolical and so twisted that you want him to get caught and punished...soon, before he does more harm. Kaskov, Cara’s Russian grandfather, is a featured part of the story, and instead of being villainous, he is actually helpful. The new character introduced is Darcy, Cara’s friend from school. She is like comic relief with a twist because her life is threatened, also. This book was a book that will knock you out of your chair with its twists and turns and action that does not stop from page one until the conclusion. Iris Johansen has given the reader a book that will be hard to put down and will also make you think afterwards about all you hold dear and how one moment in time can change everything. |

Shattered Mirror kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I devoured it as quickly as I could! As always, Iris Johansen, spins an awesome tale. I have a book hangover after reading it and can't wait for the next one to come out! Great job! |

Another excellent Eve Duncan book. Each succeeding book gets better. Great new character Darcy, Cara's roommate at school. A skull is left in a box with a mirror on the seat of Joe's truck minutes after Michael was sitting there. Eve works her magic but imagine her shock when she meets Cara's friend Darcy. She is an exact replica of the reconstruction, a twin. Many twists and turns as the killer comes closer and closer. I love the relationships between the characters. I hope we see more of Darcy in future books. Thank you NetGalley, St. Martin's Press and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book. |
This story was okay for me. I really didn’t understand how Darcy and Sylvie tied into the plot. I thought Darcy was very annoying. Cara and Jock remind me a lot of Jane and Trever. The story has a trigger in it that crossed my moral boundaries and was difficult to read. |
Loving this series , really need to pick up the books and start adding them on to my shelf, can't wait to read more by this author and see more of these characters. With that said I would like to think Netgalley for giving me a chance to read and review this book in change for my honest opinion. |
I can honestly say this book really hit me hard. It broke my heart with all the misery and death, but also uplifted me with the determination and resolve of the characters. Eve, top forensic sculptor, is at it once again, vowing to “bring home” the latest victim by sculpting over their burned skull in hopes to identify them. Little did she, or her family, realize how close to home this one would hit. All of the major actors are here from her past books, and each is growing in their own way in their blended family. I can say this book ended appropriately enough. One thing I have noticed reading Johansen’s books is a certain turn of a phrase she uses. When one character is talking about another, they use the phrase “your Eve”or “your Michael”, enough so that it is noticeable. Just an odd tidbit. So go read it already! |
One of the better recent Eve Duncan books... As usual, someone is after Eve and her family. There was a lot of set-up to the story, but it came together pretty quickly. It's amazing how Eve and/or someone in her family is always a target for a sicko or in trouble. Eve is super tough, and her husband, Joe, is as well. I wouldn't want to mess with either of them! I highly recommend Johansen's Eve Duncan series, but I would recommend that they be read in order, as the characters move throughout the books. You need to know what makes Eve tick. This is an honest review in exchange for the ARC from NetGalley. |
"Everything's going to change." Another intriguing tale from the master of suspense Iris Johansen. From chapter one, when the plot begins to emerge, we get a quick recap of the characters which will allow this story to stand alone if the reader hasn't read the Eve Duncan series. But it helps as the personalities add depth to the story and we begin to see the often repeated comment,"things are going to change"; Cara discovering sex, Michael transforming into Bonnie and Jock falling in love. The only consistency is Eve discovering trouble working on another skull. Even though Johansen weaves another convoluted but interesting plot, long time readers might find the story a bit stale. Maybe its time for Joe and Eve to retire and enjoy a peaceful life, watching the sun set over the lake. |
Shattered Mirror – Iris Johansen (Eve Duncan #23) I received this novel as an Advance Reader Copy, in exchange for an objective review. Eve Duncan is back once more, as a mysterious gold wrapped box is left on the seat of Joe Quinn’s jeep. After carefully extracting the package and ensuring it’s not explosive, Joe opens the box to find a two faced mirror – with one side intact and the other broken. Beneath the mirror, there is a skull, charred from fire, but with a bullet hole evident. As he explores the property, he finds evidence that someone has been trespassing, and presumably surveilling the area. As Eve starts to prep the skull for reconstruction, her son Michael, only six years old, but already displaying signs of a sixth sense intuition, suggests that the skull be named Sylvie. Meanwhile, adopted prodigy Cara is in New York City, getting ready to head to Connecticut for a concert with roommate and best friend Darcy. Although very few know that she is the granddaughter of Sergei Kaskov, Jock Gavin comes back into her life to tell her she’s been shadowed, and he steps in to protect her. When she is attacked, and nearly killed, both she and room mate Darcy head to Atlanta to stay with Eve and Joe. Meanwhile, Eve has just about completed the reconstruction of the skull, when Michael comes to look at it, and tells her that the eye color is wrong – they should be blue. And when Cara and Darcy arrive, Eve realizes that the skull is an exact duplicate of Darcy – and Darcy has a twin named Sylvia. And so the next adventure in the Eve Duncan series begins, as Eve, Joe, Cara, Darcy and Jock search for answers in this seemingly complex puzzle, where lives are in danger, no one is safe, and uneasy alliances are made in an effort to save the lives of those they love. From the lakes of Atlanta, to the bayous of Louisiana, this novel is packed with non-stop action! As usual when I’m reading an Eve Duncan novel, I could NOT put it down! |

Another great suspense featuring one of my favorite characters, Eve Duncan. This author always delivers great edge of your seat read. I highly recommend this book. |
With Shattered Mirror Iris Johansen has once again brought forth a wonderful story told in a way to keep the reader intrigued all the way through from beginning to end. A burnt skull is delivered to the jeep at the house of forensic sculptor Eve Duncan on the seat of where her son Michael usually sits.. As she reconstructs the skull and brings the face to life Michael has a name for the girl that emerges...Sylvie.. Around the time this is all happening, Cara (off at college with her new roommate Darcy) is attacked in their suite.. Cara's friend and shadow bodyguard Jock Gavin starts trying to figure out what is the cause of the attack. It is soon decided that Cara needs to take some time off and go see Eve and Joe. Upon arrival, Darcy (and everyone else) is shocked to find out that the skull the Eve has been working on is in fact Sylvie, Darcy's twin sister... Without revealing more of the story, the intrigue involves foreign players, Sergei Kaskov, a Russian Mafioso living in New Orleans with whom Cara visits yearly out of an obligation of his having saved her in a prior episode. This novel stands well enough on it's own but is just that much better for those who have read the previous books dealing with Eve, Cara, and Kaskov as well as Joe and Jock...not to mention Rory Norwalk.. Read this book and every other book by Iris Johansen you can get. Every one is a well-crafted work. |

Another page turner with many twist. Eve Duncan receives a skull to reconstruct and then meets the mirror image. You want to keep reading and not put it down. A lot of suspense |
