Great Dog by Davide Cali is a cute book with a surprise ending. I enjoyed the illustrations as well.

I wasn't a massive fan of this one. Simple and fun, but it was missing something.
Thank you to NetGalley, as well as the publisher for providing me with a digital copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review.

A positive story of the innate possibility to be anything you would like to be. The illustrations are a little juvenile but the story sends a nice message.

cute idea andI adored the illustrations but I didn't feel like the theme of this story carried enough weight and content to use as a teachable story or even enjoyable or silly enough to read on its own just for pleasure.

I liked how intricate the illustrations were in “Great Dog.” Kids will relate to hearing stories will looking at pictures with adults.

This book was had zero appeal with no good lesson or anything to help any child who might read it! It had fine enough illustrations but no appeal to want to recommend it for anything! Poorly written with no lesson or encouragement for any child, just a poorly done book. I have to add that I adore children’s books but this book was mainly some illustrations with words....no story to follow and not sure what to take away from it.

A hallway of family portraits spurs a conversation between father and pup. There have been so many great dogs in their family. The great dog's portraits hang right there in the hallway. Each time the father explains how great one of their family members is, like Aunt Doris the fire dog, the illustration shows a maybe not-so-great event in that dog's life, like Aunt Doris standing on the fire hose so no water is coming out. As they discuss the portraits the pup wonders aloud if he'll be a great dog too, and the father reassures him he will - with a slight twist at the end.
Great Dog reminds us that families come in all shapes and sizes and that even the greatest of us aren't perfect.

Thanks to NetGalley, Penguin Random House and Davide Cali for the opportunity to read this young children's book.
This is a cute story about a father showing his child pictures of their relatives and telling him that he can be anything he wants. Great message with an interesting twist at the end that I was a bit confused by. Illustrations were different but I thought they were appropriate.

This book could have been fun, but I felt like it fell short. I don’t have much more to say than that.

Great Dog is a sweet book about dogs who are remembered because they worked hard and tried their best. Despite not necessarily being the best at what they did, they are remembered as great because of their hard work. The twist at the end is very cute and serves as a great reminder for kids and adults that no matter who or what we are, we can always be whatever we choose for ourselves.

This is an enjoyable story to read to your young child. It supports teaching children to explore things they are interested in because they really can grow up to be and do anything. Told from the point of a "dog" looking at other "great dogs" that have come before him in the family makes it funny and accessible to children. Each illustration has a humorous element to it which will appeal to the pre-K and elementary audience. As much as I enjoyed the funny aspects of them, the illustrations were not appealing to me personally from an aesthetic standpoint. This is a title I would encourage choosing in a library setting but not one I would buy for our home.

Great Dog is a fun read with lovely illustrations and a really cute twist!

A cute story - a bit off. With an odd twist at the end.
But I think kids would get a kick out it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for a copy in return for an honest review.

A picture book walk through great dogs in history. It was okay, but nothing to brad about. That artwork was nice, but see previous sentence.

What do you want to be when you grow up? At some point in each of our lives we have thought about that very question. Children love to think about what they will be when they grow up. This is a book that you might want to consider purchasing to share with them.
This book approaches that very subject in a way that will bring a smile to a child’s face as you read this adorable book to them!
As the story progresses, you are taken through a wall of fame. Well... pictures of family members that show such a wonderful diversity of this family's members.
The illustrations by Miguel Tanco are very interesting. I enjoyed spending time looking at each of the family members and studying closely the details in each picture.
The unexpected twist at the end was a bonus!
This would be a wonderful book to add to a classroom library.

The illustrations in the book were somewhat childish in style. Not visually appealing to me, but that part is objective.
Storyline, the book seemed... confusing. It felt as though the author was trying to make a much larger statement... either that the "puppy" was adopted and was really a "kitten", or a statement about gender reassignment, because despite being a puppy he could grow up to be a cat. I'm not at all sure what I actually read.

This book had a great message, but I was not fond of the style of the illustrations. The message to children is that you can be whatever you want and be great at it. The story has a father and son going through the hall of family portraits and the dad describes that that relative did that made them a great dog. The twist of course is the next illustration shows them either messing up, or doing something not quite what is expected. There is another twist at the end of the story. A cute book for a school or classroom library.

I am a fan of Davide Cali's books, and went into this great anticipation and high expectations. It was sweet, funny, and surprising. The illustrations were minimalist, bright, detailed and lovely. The text and illustrations worked together beautifully to create a charming story for children. I will certainly be buying this for our library.

Great Dog was one of those books that I can see myself giving children as a gift for years to come. It has encouragement flowing throughout the book. As a young dog walks with his father down the hall of family photos, they talk about what each dog had done that was important and amazing. The young dog kept asking, "Will I do something great one day?" The father's response was one that you hope all parents are capable and willing to give to their children. I couldn't wait to share this story with my own children and encourage them to do something great, no matter what they thought that would be.
