Right Sky at Night shows a family’s camping outing alongside weather sayings.

MacKay created detailed paper art that captures the light and feelings of different times of day and different types of weather. I loved the images of the family gathered together and the siblings playing games. At the end of the book each saying is described in more detail to determine whether it is true or false, this was a lot of fun to look over with my young readers and get their intuitive take on the science or lack of it in each saying. This is a great book to read while learning about weather or while taking outdoor adventures.

I grew up knowing these by heart but it turns out there are plenty of weather sayings that have bypassed me entirely. The text in this children’s book is made up of some well known and some more obscure weather sayings, with some information about how accurate they are included at the end.

It’s only when you look at the illustrations that you learn the book’s story. A grandfather takes his grandchildren out on a boat. They fish, swim and camp overnight before returning home just before a storm. My two favourite illustrations feature an owl and a whale.

As I read this book I imagined the grandfather paying attention to the weather and explaining the saying that matched each weather condition to his grandkids. I know I think of my grandfather and smile whenever someone mentions the sayings associated with sailors.

The illustrations made by Elly Mackay are truly extraordinary. A combination of pictures and stories that are captivating and make the reader fascinated with a simple and warm life. The story of grandfather and grandson with a series of beautiful and soothing words. Images of light, paper and photography are very amazing things from this book.

The artwork in “Red Sky at Night” was breathtaking. I loved it just for that. (The quotes were fun too, but the art definitely stole the show.)

This adorable book is a wonderful tribute to Weather Folklore! There are so many sayings that have been passed down through the generations that are known to predict the weather, many of which I was first introduced to through this book! The illustrations are absolutely stunning and bring to life each of these sayings in impeccable detail! This book would not only make a wonderful addition to any weather lesson for young children, it would make a great addition to any school or home library!

This is a lovely book. The illustrations are stunning, I just love Elly Mackay's work. I also think that this is a really neat concept for a picture book. I remember learning some of these weather related phrases as a kid but I had never heard of many of them. Loved the inclusion of the history, and accuracy, behind the phrases. A great addition to any child's library!

A unique book that beautifully illustrates popular weather sayings. Elly MacKay's trademark paper artwork that is photographed in a miniature theater is absolutely gorgeous, I love all her work! There isn't much of a story here, but I think young readers will enjoy the incredible art and interpretations of the weather sayings.

Red Sky at Night is a picturebook written and illustrated by Elly MacKay. It is currently scheduled for release on May 1 2018. Red sky at night, sailor's delight. And, the next morning, when the dew is on the grass, no rain will come to pass. These are the perfect conditions for a grandfather to take his grandchildren out on a fishing trip. Especially since, as the saying goes, when the wind is from the West, then the fishes bite the best. The family takes a boat out on the lake, fishing and swimming and eventually camping out on a nearby island, taking full advantage of the gorgeous weather. But the next day, red sky in the morning, sailors take warning! The family ventures back home just in time to avoid a rainstorm. But not to worry -- the more rain, the more rest. Fair weather's not always best.

Red Sky at Night is more than a collection of weather related folklore, and more than a story about a family on a fishing trip. I like the way this book combines the two, and includes weather saying s that I have known all my life, and taught me some I had never heard before. I like the way the The illustrations were lovely, and captured the family's emotions, that the weather at hand, and the hints of weather to come. I thought the animals in the background spoke to the wildness of nature, and how changeable and untameable it is. I also liked the information on the sayings, their background, the truthfulness of reliability of the sayings, and how they have changed. I love a picturebook that tells a story and teaches something interesting and fun, without losing the charm of a story- and this book does it admirably.

What a lovely and interesting book! The author gathered sayings about the weather and illustrated them with paper art. I'd seen some of Elly Mackay's books before and her style is so recognizable and fresh! I really enjoy it. I also liked the non-fiction part in the end, where they explain the origins of the sayings and confirm their truthfulness (or not).

A cute childrens book that tells them the different sayings and signs used by "nature folk" to predict the weather and other things. Well illustrated and informative.

This beautifully illustrated picture book shares weather sayings, such as "Red sky at night, sailor's delight." Each page features one saying with an accompanying illustration, with brief explanations about each saying at the end of the book.

The pictures are gorgeous, which makes the book appealing. The subject matter--the weather sayings--might appeal to fewer people. A lot of the sayings seem to certain around water, so it might be most appealing to those who leave near water or have an interest in the sea. While the book might not have universal appeal, it definitely makes me want to see more of Elly MacKay's work.

The pictures in this book were absolutely gorgeous! It was definitely the best part of the book. The premise was interesting, using old sayings about the weather and illustrating them. At the end, in a glossary-like section, it explains the phrases a little better. It was really a neat book!

This story was informative and the illustrations were beautiful. I never thought about how one predicted the weather in the past before modern technology. The sayings will really stick in your head. An enjoyable read for the kiddos who enjoy rhyming.

A great book that explains familiar phrases children hear about weather. The author takes something old and makes it quite new. I appreciate the inclusion of multicultural characters and how the illustrations tell a story while the phrases remain unconnected, it creates a fluidity of story. Not only that, but it makes for different ways to engage a child with the book.

Unique vocabulary, new concepts and conversation starters on weather and weather patterns all make this a read that entertains while building reading comprehension.

The illustrations are beautiful! I honestly can't say enough about them. The weather saying are rhymes inherently, which makes them more appealing to younger readers. If you have an elementary age child, they can enjoy the book and gorgeous illustrations and then can benefit from the weather wisdom section at the end of the book where the saying are explained in further depth and either affirmed or refuted. I would say this is worth buying as a personal title for the illustrations alone, but I would love to see it added to more school and public libraries, as well.

The illustrations are gorgeous. The only text of the story are the saying about different types of weather. For any kid interested in nature and/or weather, this is a perfect book for them. The notes at the end about how each saying came to be and what they need was a nice surprise and give the book a wider readership.

This book is full of weather related phrases and beautiful corresponding illustrations. I think younger children might be confused by the language, so I appreciated that there is an index at the end that explains the meaning behind each phrase used, and some of their backgrounds. I thought that part was really interesting.

What an interesting and lovely book. It focuses on weather sayings, such as “Red sky in morn, sailors be warned”. The way they are laid out in the book it almost tells a story. Then at the end, the book gives a bigger glimpse into what the saying actually means. Such as the saying above means a high pressure system as already passed over and a low pressure system will be coming. Educational and interesting. Be sure to add it to your collection.

What an interesting book. It's full of weather prediction poems, i.e. "Red sky at night, sailors delight." But what makes this book stand out is the illustrations. So unique and interesting!
