I have read the first two books in this series and enjoyed parts of them, so I was interested to review this 6th book in the series. This book had the charm that I enjoyed in the first two book, but I felt like the train setting hindered the plot. I had a very Agatha Christie feel and the time limit to solving the case gave it an excitement factor, which were both positives. Yet, the lack of characters made the outcome more obvious to the reader and almost made it seem repetitive because there where only a few places for the characters to travel to. They only had the travels on the train and the train cars to investigate (it was not a big train). I ended up rating it kind of low, only 2.5, but I think if you really liked the first 5 books on the series you'd probably enjoy it!

I received his from NetGalley to read and review. Having read the other books in the series, I was eager to read this one. However, I am trying to figure out why I did not feel so good about this one as most of the other reviewers. I may be tired of the series and its characters or I may just not see humor in some of the silly/humorous things that happen in this one.

In this book, Verity Long and her current squeeze, Ellis, take a trip on a vintage train through the Tennessee mountains. The train carries a lot of history with it, but Verity is determined to enjoy this R&R without ghostly interference or reliving the history. The ghosts and the history, however, do not want to be left out of this adventure, so end up being a big part of it. The history of the train reveals that a young woman was stabbed to death in a locked compartment of the train nearly a hundred years ago, and the Belgian detective on the case is still pursuing it after all this time. In this book, history repeats itself, and Verity finds herself and Ellis trying to piece together the clues in a copy-cat murder while figuring out what exactly happened this time and so long ago.

The book was filled with the usual quirky characters, both ghosts and human. I though it interesting that Verity’s former beau and the brother of Ellis as well as their difficult-to-take mother were included as passengers/owners of the Sugarland Express. I found this inclusion a bit much, and the characters, especially Verity’s former beau, almost a detraction and too much to take with the rest of the story unfolding. True to form, Verity’s ghost and untethered house tenant, Frankie, the former mobster, is up to his regular antics. This time, however, he has a female ghost he is pursuing and spends a lot of effort stumbling along trying to be a romantic—which I got a bit tired of as the story progressed. Still, as I said, the characters are well done. I do think a bit more back story could have been included for anyone who has not read the other books, so this one would be a better stand-alone. The story is loosely patterned after Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, and does a god job at mimicking that. After reading it, as I said, I am still trying to figure out what I did not like about this book. It will appeal to the readers of the series or to any reader who enjoys a good, humorous take on murder mysteries as well as some good paranormal activity.

This series keeps getting better with the next book. I really enjoyed this book. Quick, fun read. Loved it!

I just love to head back to Sugarland and meet up with the gang. The romance between Verity and Ellis is so sweet, he totally takes it in his stride having Frankie and Molly muscle in on what was supposed to be a romantic holiday. It turns out being anything but that. When Verity's ex Beau plus his mother are on board the train. Ellis books them on the maiden run of the Sugarland Express. The train is an exact replica of the original . They even used the bell from the fated train. Back in the twenties the Sugarland Express was besieged by tragedy when a young woman was murdered, then the bridge gave way under the weight of the train. Now the ghosts are back fated to relive their final moments. While Verity and co are trying to solve what happened back then. Someone else dies in the exact same compartment and in the same way. Can Verity solve both mysteries in time? I'm not going to give it away. All I will say is I highly recommend this series. Can't wait to read the next instalment. I voluntarily received a copy from good reads. This is my honest review.

This is now my favorite book in the series. Loved the story line. Agatha Christie inspired book picture Murder on the Orient Express except with a ghost hunter onboard. So you get two mysteries that need to be solved one in the living and the other in the deceased plain.

Verity and her boyfriend Ellis need to get away from his family and the ghost. Eliis manages to get two of the last tickets for the Sugarland Express Train. This is the authentic train where 80 years ago a murder had occurred. The ghost try to warn Verity that tragedy will strike again. When tragedy strikes Verity has a limited amount to solve both mysteries if the train is to reach its final destination. Will she be able to stop this train from going into the river as the original.

This is the 6th book in the series and it is by far my favorite book.

I. Cannot. Get. Enough. Of. These. Books! This was another winner, 6th in a series of winners. Ms Fox is doing such a great job of writing fun and engaging stories. Her characters are the types of people you would want to know. This story as evidenced by the title is inspired from Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express but is enough of its own story to not be a cheap knock off. Beyond the the immediate murder mystery is a developing complex family dynamics story. I appreciate the author adding depth and motivations to Verity’s philandering ex and his vindictive mother. I’m especially happy to see those characters being developed beyond flat cliches because of Verity’s growing romantic relation with her ex’s brother. The ghost character just add another level of complexity and enjoyment.

It's time to get away from Frankie and the other ghosts and have a nice peaceful vacation. Ellis, Verity Long's boyfriend, has surprised her with tickets on the maiden voyage of the Sugarland Express, a historic train.

The ghosts have another idea. Frankie is determined to tag along to provide a romantic getaway for his girlfriend. Little do they know that the Sugarland Express was the scene of a murder oh so many years ago and that the detective that investigated it is still investigating.

As if that wasn't enough mystery, someone in the present day is also murdered on the train while it is stuck in the mountains and the wifi and communications equipment have been destroyed. It becomes a very busy trip for Verity as Ellis and Verity spring into action trying to solve the present day murder before anyone else gets killed. And Frankie and Verity get sucked into trying to solve the mystery from the past before the ghost train version of the train is derailed and plunges into the river once again.

This is a hat tip to Murder on the Orient Express. Someone on the train must have committed the murder in the present day as well as some ghost committed the murder in the past.

This book can be read as a standalone even though it is the sixth book in the Southern Ghost Hunter series. Enough information is given for you to follow along. It's better, though, if you've had some exposure to the characters prior to this though. It's just more enjoyable knowing their history.

Overall, I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. It's well-written and paced well. There are two mysteries for the price of one and the author even manages to connect them in a way. The characters are interesting. There is a good sense of humor that shines through even though the mysteries are tough to solve. If you enjoy humorous cozies with some paranormal involvement, then this would be a good reading choice for you.

MURDER ON THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS is the ninth offering / sixth full length story in the Southern Ghost Hunter series. There is no need to have read the previous books to understand the characters of this story. In fact, I have only read the first book in this series and now I’m wishing I had the others!

It has been almost three years – (OMG! Really? Wow!!) – Since I read the first book in this series and I must admit it has stuck with me through all of this time.

I could not put this book down. Two mysteries to solve – one on the train and one on the ghost realm of the train – make for twice as much story to love.

Verity and Ellis are a power couple solving crimes in real time and for the ghosts so that everyone can rest more easily, or in peace, as the case may be. I’m still in love with them, Frankie, and Lucy, but now we can add Molly and many others to my heart of characters that I will claim. I’ll even claim Beau and the ex-to-be/maybe-to-be mother-in-law, Virginia.

I held my breath. I laughed – a lot! I couldn’t put it down…. And I am hoping there will be more adventures in the future.

Note: while I was given this book as a gifted ARC, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

Verity Long is back, this time taking a well-deserved vacation with her boyfriend Ellis. They board the Sugarland Express, a vintage train trip through the Tennessee mountains. What they did not know before they boarded was that the original Sugarland Express was the scene of an unsolved murder almost a century ago. All of the ghosts from that fateful journey are back and the scene will be re-created if Verity can't find the killer in time.
Full of laugh-out-loud moments, and nerve-wracking scenes, this book will keep you turning pages until all the answers are revealed.

In the past few books, Verity and Frankie's working relationship has been nonexistent.  More and more, Verity is becoming reliant on her own skills and luck to solve the mysteries and crimes that have been occurring all over Sugarland.  I can understand the need for Frankie's world to expand outside of Verity's needs and I am thrilled to see his budding relationship with Molly.  But the only way these books work is if he begins to become more involved in "helping" Verity.  I put that word in quotations because let's be honest, he's not really that big a help.  But still...

I liked this book and how it was a nod to the famed Agatha Christie novel, Murder on the Orient Express.  I've never actually read the book, so I'm not sure how well it lines up or is different.  But I do understand the gist of the storyline.

Verity and Ellis believe they can find peace and quiet as they embark on the Sugarland Express' maiden trip.  However, there wouldn't be a book if that was the case and it's only a matter of time before there's a ghostly mystery or murder to solve.  What they don't count on is the fact that Verity's ex-fiance (and Ellis' younger brother), Beau would also be on the same train ride... or his mother, Virginia.  If that doesn't make things awkward enough, Verity and Ellis' room is right next to Beau's.

While the awkwardness is part of the drama in this story, the mystery unfolding throughout the book leaves Verity and Virginia working together to find a murderer.  I actually enjoyed seeing a better side of Virginia, even if it doesn't mean everything is a-okay between the two women.  It was even nice to see that Verity was able to address her past with Beau.

For the sake of not spoiling the story, I'll keep things vague.  But I highly recommend this book and even this series.  I am sad that I will have to wait several months before the next book.  But this series was so good and engaging that I practically devoured all of the books over the past week.  So, if you are a lover of cozy mysteries or paranormal mysteries, this is the series for you!

This is a fun take on Agatha Christie's Murder On The Orient Express, with a paranormal twist.
This is the 6th book in the Southern Ghost Hunters series. Not only is there a real life murder to solve, bit there's a ghostly murder to solve as well. This is a great paranormal cozy.

Princess Fuzzypants here:
Verity is on a train that presents double jeopardy. Not only is there a flesh and blood murderer onboard who does not appreciate her efforts to unmask him but there is a spectral diasaster that is about to be repeated that could kill her if she is connected to the ghost world at the time. Good grief. There is nowhere that is safe and like an Agatha Christie novel, there is nowhere to go as the train is unable to communicate with the outside world and is in the middle of nowhere.
What was supposed to be a quiet getaway with her boyfriend turns out to be anything but. The fact that her ex-fiancé who is the brother of her current boyfriend and their snobby mother are both on the train does not reduce the stress. So Verity and the gangster ghost who is her own personal shadow have their hands full. Neither the flesh and blood nor the spectral passengers are happy with her. It is a matter of life and death for her to solve the mysteries.
Clearly, with the characters described, the reader knows this is going to be frothy and light. Yet there is still some very good suspense and lots of twists to make it an enjoyable read. It is also good fun.
I give it four purrs and two paws up.

This book was another fun murder mystery! I think that even if you’ve never read a book in the series, you’d enjoy this fun, quick read.

We join Verity as she continues to navigate small town life, while dating her ex-fiancé’s brother. After a particularly stressful stretch of drama, they decide to go on a historical and romantic vacation. Who wouldn’t love a trip on a renovated luxury train? Well, there is also the small matter of Verity’s newly coupled ghost, Frankie, wanting to tag along with his girlfriend. Oh, and the small matter of an ominous warning from a ghostly conductor of the previously destroyed train. Verity just can’t seem to catch a break and go on a real vacation.

Of course, Verity is not one to let things go. She can’t just go on vacation without something horrible happening, and in this case it’s a murder. Much like the game of clue, Verity and her boyfriend are forced to detective out “whodunit” before the ghost train crashes once again. I admit, I didn’t solve the mystery before Verity did, so I guess that means it was truly a challenging mystery. I love these books, all the wonderful characters, and this book was a great addition to the series.

Verity Long is overdue for a little R&R with her boyfriend, Ellis. For a Ghost Hunter, a vintage train trip through the Tennessee mountains seems like just the ticket. The Sugarland Express carries history and nostalgia in every compartment, and Verity is determined to enjoy it, without ghostly interference. But the ghosts have other plans like murder…

On a dark, bleak night nearly a century ago, the Sugarland Express was stranded in the mountains, and a young woman was found stabbed to death in her locked compartment. The murder was never solved, and a dead Belgian detective is still trying to solve the case from the grave. Adding to Verity’s dismay, all the dead suspects are back as well. When history repeats itself, and a new murder mirrors the old, it’s up to Verity and her friends, living and dead, to discover which of the passengers are behind the murders.

Series: Southern Ghost Hunter - Book 6
Author: Angie Fox http://angiefox.com
Genre: Cozy Mystery/Paranormal
Publisher: Moose Island Books

Murder on the Sugarland Express is a fun adventure through time with multiple ghost and historical reference. The very “Agatha Christie” feel of this story will keep readers turning the page and entertain them throughout.

Verity and Ellis are wonderful characters with everyday problems and a few that are extraordinary. Verity doesn’t just see ghosts, she lives with them, talks to them and tries to help them whenever she can. Ellis is a police officer, and even though most people wouldn’t believe that Verity talks to ghosts, he accepts it at face value without question. If Verity tells him a ghost told her something important, he jumps into action. Combined they make a fantastic duo of ghost hunter and crime fighter.

Other characters are warm and compassionate as well as interesting and fun. The cast of suspects are likable, intriguing and well rounded. They have characteristics that readers find in everyday life with those they know and love. Add an adorable pet skunk, and you have the makings of a memorable book.

The Sugarland Express is romantic as only old trains can be. The opulence of the cars brings to mind a time long ago when passenger travel was about the adventure and not the amount of time it takes to get from point A to point B. The setting is perfect for a mystery. Who can’t imagine a train filled with ghosts and the living intermingling on an adventure that ends in murder?

The long-dead victim is tragic while the newest victim is far from it. The motive for the murder is not readily clear and at times can seem almost absent. Clues are there to be found if the reader takes the time to look for them. The unveiling of the killer is dramatic and filled with action, and of course, ghosts.

Although Murder on the Sugarland Express is a fast-paced easy-to-read book, it is also an ode to the most famous mystery writer of all time, Dame Agatha Christie. In some ways, it is almost too close in comparison to “Murder on the Orient Express.” Take out the ghost, and the reader may well think they are reading an altered version of Ms. Christie’s book. And herein lies the problem. On its own, this book is worth reading, but the comparison to Agatha Christie’s work is inevitable and unfortunate in some ways.

Ms. Fox is a talented writer, and her passion for her craft is evident. However, writing a book that so closely resembles a rather famous one, can be hard to achieve without coming off as a copycat. Although Ms. Fox has achieved this with her book, it is difficult to read it without comparing it to Ms. Christie’s material.

This is the sixth book in the series, and some readers may not understand the references to other murders, or relationships. The inner workings of Verity’s relationship with Ellis, his brother Beau and their mother can be difficult to understand without any references to explain the situation. The book would benefit from a short introduction helping to explain how Verity finds herself in her current predicament and the intricate relationship between her and the other characters.

Over-all Murder on the Sugarland Express is an enjoyable read that will have readers interested from the first paragraph. Anyone who enjoys Agatha Christie novels will like Angie Fox’s Southern Ghost Hunter series and this book in particular.

I absolutely love this series! I really liked how there were two separate murders that she was investigating, and there were surprising twists in each one. The pacing was great and the plot never seemed to drag.

I love this series and I was so lucky that I got a copy through NetGalley in exchange for a review, which I am happy to provide. Since this is the 6th book I would recommend you read them in order, just so you can get a feel for all Verity and Ellis have been through. The Author does do a good job of giving you some backstory so you could definitely enjoy the story without getting too lost. There was plenty of action in the real and ghost world, romance, mystery and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lets just say I might have neglected some of my work just in order to devoured this book since it was really hard to put down. I can't wait to see what will happen next.

Verity is a ghost hunter with a desperate need for a vacation (away from Frankie a ghost she lives with, and the nosey towns folk) with her boyfriend Ellis. Ellis happens to be the brother of her ex boyfriend Beau. This in itself causes problems. When Verity gets the opportunity to take a vacation on a vintage train for a couple of days, she is excited to be getting away. She tells herself no ghosts hunting or solving their ghostly mysteries, however Frankie convinces Verity to take him along with her and this opens the gate into the ghosts world. Verity finds herself trying to solve a murder that happened on the original train more than a century ago, and if she is not quick enough to solve it, her life too will be in danger, as the tragic events that occurred all those years ago are starting to again unfold.

This was book 6 of the series. I had not read any of the other books, however it was easy enough to follow along with the characters and understand what had happened in the past to lead them to where they were currently. It appears that each book has a different story, but the same characters that the story builds on. I found the book enjoyable and I am interested in reading the other books in the series.

I like the humour within the book and I found the ghost Frankie that lives with Verity quite entertaining. If you like ghost hunters and ghost stories I think you will like this. It had the flavour of Murder on the Orient Express and I think the author used what she knew of that book and made this story her own. It did take me a few chapters to warm to the story, but then I was hooked. Had good mystery, suspense and intrigue, and I wasn't sure who was behind the murder until the end.

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I've been a fan of this series from the beginning, and I love times like these when I find them on Net Galley and can get an ARC. This series is just fun. Verity takes a licking and keeps on ticking. She is constantly struggling and getting hit with more bad news. Just as things are looking up, and she and Ellis have a fun train ride planned for just the two of them, their plans are derailed by interfering family and ghosts...not to mention a murder. It's a crazy ghostly adventure as always.

Ellis remains a favorite of mine, and even Beau showed some redeeming qualities. I'm ready for the next book and to see Verity and Ellis even more serious.

The Southern Spirits Ghost Hunter Series is one of my favorite series of all time and Murder of the Sugarland Express was another hit.

Verity, Ellis, Lucy (the skunk), Frankie & many other favorite characters are back for another great story. And we get to know Verity's almost (maybe soon to be again) mother-in-law & her ex better

This book takes Verity & Ellis on a weekend getaway & the fun starts before they even leave Sugarland!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Loved! This is another winner in the Southern Spirits Ghost Hunter Series. In this novel, Ellis whisks Verity away for a quiet and historical trip on the Sugarland Express's maiden voyage after being rebuilt. The original Sugarland Express was destroyed many years ago on it's maiden voyage. However, Frankie, Verity's resident ghost won't allow her to leave him behind, so before even boarding the train, Verity is being warned of disaster by the ghost conductor. What follows is a fun murder mystery/who done it that fans of the genre will love.

I love Verity and her story....despite how offbeat it is the author made me feel connected to her character and rooting for her. She has had many setbacks in her life - most revolving around the Wydell family - and I enjoyed reading about how those relationships have progressed.

While this is a stand alone novel, you really owe it to yourself to read them all.
